4.5/5 ?????

Susanita I bailed on the Book Thief after multiple attempts 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo
RaeLovesToRead @Susanita There wasn't a single moment in that book that I wasn't aware I was reading a book. It all felt like writing. Felt really inauthentic from start to finish. 6mo

I‘m not sure enjoy is the right word for this one. Heavy, Intense and thought provoking, I finished it in two days!
Wasn‘t quite ready for how dark things got towards the end and it left me feeling a bit frustrated. Having said that, Malorie Blackman is a legend and I can‘t believe it‘s taken me this long to read.

Unpopular opinion. Sorry. It‘s a brilliantly imagined, thought-provoking & important read. And Malorie Blackman is awesome, so I‘m glad I finally read this.

But it reminds me of the books I was given as set texts in school that piled issue on top of issue, were unremittingly grim, & leave you without the slightest glimmer of hope. Plus I‘m not entirely sure I believed in their love story.

Best not read in 2020. Or just not my thing. Or both.

BookwormM 2020 is definitely not the year to read grim books shame no one told the Booker judges that 🤣🤣 4y
rockpools @BookwormM Ha! The International ones were bad enough, but at least there was a little bit of sunshine in there. I saw your comments on Booker and stuck with just the one from the list (Real Life), which I liked. But it was grim! Will you be doing another round of readaroundtheworld next year, do you think? 4y
BookwormM I will definitely be doing more read around the world planning to randomise countries this weekend 👍😊you joining me? 4y
rockpools @BookwormM Yay! Very definitely. I might not get through them every month (North Korea‘s still eyeing me from the bedside table) but it seems to be the one challenge I manage to stick with. Look forward to seeing where we end up next year! 4y

"How many individuals does it take before it's not the individuals who are prejudiced but society itself?"

I remember lots of people at school reading this book over 10 years ago but for some reason I never gave it a go! So glad I finally read it and I am eager to read the whole series. A very poignant YA book about racial inequality.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Absolutely loved this book. I often feel like I shouldn‘t be reading YA fiction, but I‘m glad I did. I haven‘t enjoyed a book like this for a while now. An upside down look at how no matter which race is deemed ‘superior‘, equality is always miles from their minds.

This is brilliant, a really gripping read. The 'alternate history' is that blacks (Crosses) historically enslaved whites (noughts), and now hold the power in a segregated society. A powerful reflection on how injustice can ferment a wish for revenge, and how destructive that cycle can be.

An astonishing book sees me finish summer with a high and wishing books like this had existed when i was a teen. It reverses the race issue with the oppressed group noughts being white people. The bk focusses on callum a nought and sephy a cross & their love story amid a race struggle into which the families are drawn. A great book & im so glad i've now rd it.

Cinfhen So glad u discovered a new book/ genre 5y

So yesterday I absolutely devoured One of us is Lying after finding it on Kindle store and immediately went in search of Two Can Keep a Secret because woooow I needed it. Was really happy too to find that it‘s got sprayed edges 😍
Noughts & Crosses came up and I remember reading this years ago, possibly even in primary school, and never really went any further with it even though I really enjoyed it soooo that‘s another series I‘m started now 😂♥️

It‘s been so long since I posted! I have a two week Easter break from university so I have come with my family to Spain for a relaxing fortnight of pure sun and reading — it literally doesn‘t get better than this. Noughts and Crosses has been in my TBR list for a long time and then I seen it reduced to 99p on the kindle store so finally giving it a shot. So far so good! Any other holiday reading recommendations? #holiday #currentlyreading

emilyhaldi No, I don‘t think it does get better than that! 🙌🏻 7y

The concept was great and reiterated how deeply socially entrenched racism is but it was not well written. Using the perspectives was good but the story arc was a mess.

The author cannot seem to decide what she is writing, a dystopian? A modern day Romeo & Juliet? A response to To Kill a Mockingbird? A YA alternative literature?

bookloo I was soooo disappointed with this book. 😩 7y
MariettaSG @bookloo likewise. I expected much greater things from it. 7y

The book veers significantly at the section named 'The Hostage', I assume this is for dramatic effect; it is realistic as people's lives take dramatic turns but I'm not sure that it is effective. Furthermore the author alludes to one of the main characters being gay, if this turns out to be the case it is handled weakly.

Good story, but what I enjoyed most about this book was how it challenged my biases. I kept having to check my mental images of the characters. It really made me think.

Chose this book for a book club I run at the school I work at and I forgot how woke it is! It is a love story that perfectly deals with issues of race, class and inequality. The students enjoyed the book especially because the roles were reversed as the black people were in power. They learnt a lot about how deeply institutionalised racism is and how racism is dumb. Glad I chose this book and more people need to read this series! #diversebooks

paige84 Love this book! First read it in a college course. I just found out a few years ago there are 3 more books in the series! 8y
Juwi @AshleyPaige YES! I read this when I was 12 and I was so happy there were more books! A great series and a must read for everyone! Malorie Blackman is one of Britain's best children's authors! 😎👏🏽 8y
