I knew this book was not for me and never would have read it, but my book club picked it. I had to listen at 2.5x speed so I could get it over with quickly. I don't play video games, I hate reading about games/matches/battles, and I don't like dystopian fiction. I appreciated some of the 80s references but even those got old pretty quickly.

You ever read a book and know it was written by a male for other males? This book would be a hit for all the guys who, when hearing someone likes video games, immediately asks “ok well if you‘re a fan, name all five orchestras on the soundtrack” or something like that. The actual plot wasn‘t too bad, but I just couldn‘t shake the feeling that the book perpetuated that gatekeeping. Not for me.

I thought this was a fun and entertaining read. Plus, I was an ‘80s kid, so I loved all the ‘80s references.

Overall pick- some things I loved and some things I didn‘t. I‘m glad I was finally able to finish it!

Life update since it‘s been a while: I went back to school last year to finish my Bachelor‘s, after a ten year break, and graduated in May! (Finally finishing this book was my celebration.) I might go back for a Master‘s in linguistics eventually, but not anytime soon. It was really hard to balance my illnesses, homeschooling, and (cont‘d 👇🏼)

Saw a slide for this movie on a streaming service and remembered it was on my shelf. I‘m absolutely loving it. All the dystopian novels for me please! #dystopian #playerone #hellolitsy

Pretty good. Audio on recommendation from a couple friends. Want to watch the movie now. I had some inkling of H‘s IRL identity.

This book is amazing. It relates to my life for most of it; I like to be in Virtual Reality for a lot of the day. It‘s a great story about a teen in the year 2044 and technology has swept the world and it‘s a mess. I like how Ernest Cline gets Wade to express how he feels instead of keeping it inside and giving the book no expression. Over all probably my favourite book!

I really enjoyed this novel. It was very suspenseful at times but fun at others. While I love the 80s, I do think the nostalgia and references were a bit too much at times. The characters were also super cringey but I found that endearing, showing that even society‘s “losers” can be heroes. I also loved the theme of taking down monopolies and big corporations, almost as if it was directed at Jeff Bezos. 🤣

This book gets intense, so there is a lot to this book it‘s all over the place but in a way that you can understand what‘s going on in about 3 pages there was death there was love and there was heart brake. It‘s a great book you should check it out if you haven‘t already it‘s a great realistic fiction mystery I guess you could say

I started reading this book a little while ago but never finished, when I picked it back up it‘s so easy to get hooked on it. If you don‘t know it follows a high school kid named wade watts and it the future everyone goes to the oasis to get away from reality and when they find out about Halidays‘s egg everyone wants to find it. It‘s a great read!

Guys this book is great. This is a profound piece of pop culture that truly embraces 80s nostalgia. I love both the book and the movie equally. Definitely go check this out.

This book appeared on my radar when I saw Littens exited for Ready Player Two. When I found this copy out thrifting, I thought I‘d join the fun. I loved (and lived!) the references to 80s pop culture. I noticed from the cover that Spielberg was adapting to film. Cool when? 2018! Where have I been!?

Was no one going to tell me how awesome this book is!?!! I‘m literally a decade late to this party 😅 and it took buzz from the sequel to get me to read the first one.

So I immensely enjoyed the world building, politics, adventure, riddles, 80‘s pop culture…. Everything about this book. I was a little left out on the old gaming stuff since that‘s not my thing, but I can appreciate well described and paced scenes.

Such a disappointment! This was a bummer. I can see how people found this entertaining, it gave me “off to be the wizard” vibes, narrative-wise. I kinda loved the 80s pop references and history…but the story and the characters were filled with the misogyny and bigotry found in early videogame culture, which is very annoying. They had so many opportunities to criticize that and make the plot feel actually futuristic! Super frustrating #2021 #Flop

I‘m a pretty big nerd, but clearly not a big enough one to get every reference made (or even half the references made) in this book. A good summer read, but a better summer movie option in my opinion. Spielberg‘s tailored version for the screen is much like Halliday‘s twisting of old games and movies in the novel. But I prefer the movie version.

I got a couple of lucky guesses on books I haven't read, and then missed the Ready Player One and Notebook questions, both of which I loved. 😒 It was a fun quiz.

If you like fantasy and pop culture than you will like this book. The themes in this book are teamwork, community, friendship and the desire to connect with others.

Thought you all could appreciate this. My Facebook status from 6 years ago (pre Litsy!). I have read 7 of the books in this stack. I feel it would be unnecessary to tell any Litten that I have bought and read other books since then. Or that these are all still on my shelf 😂

Dystopian Society where COVID would never had survived. Citizens in America now spend most of their time in the OASIS, a digital world that allows you to work, go to school, and socialize from the comfort of your home. But there is a epic "Easter egg" hunt happening where the prize is billions of dollars and lots of power. Wade has to battle to win before the wrong hands grab the eggs. Great story for teens and adults alike. 5/24/21-5/28/21

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the gaming aspect and 80s references (could relate to both) - started to watch movie and stopped, maybe too soon after reading book -while the movie did depict the Oasis beautifully, I just couldn't get into it.

As someone who doesn‘t consider themselves a gamer by any stretch of the imagination, I was hesitant to pick up this book. I am so glad I did. The book was such a fun read that you can easily become invested in. I throughly enjoyed the 80s throwbacks as a grounding part of the story since I couldn‘t relate to the gaming aspects.

Almost reached my goal of 30 hours for #AwesomeApril thx for hosting @Andrew65 - nice weather over the weekend drew me outdoors to other activities 😉

I loved this for the nostalgia alone. Being of the same generation as Halliday, I grew up with the same things he grew up with and loved them. I spent so much time in arcades as a kid and obsessed over movies, tv shows, and music. So this was kind of up my alley.

If I were any more of a nerd than I already am, this would probably be one of my favourite books. It combines a lot of things I love (a quest, 80s/90s pop culture trivia, battling "the man"), and more. Wheaton was an excellent choice to narrate. I only wish I had read the book before seeing the movie (multiple times). It was simultaneously hard to separate one from the other, and to reconcile all the differences between the two. Overall good read.

This audiobook is between a pick and a so-so for me. I thought Will Wheaton did an excellent job narrating but the story was so much darker than I was expecting. My family loves the movie so there were a few changes that really threw me for a loop! Even so I enjoyed the pop culture references (although I honestly couldn‘t follow the video game stuff) and the fight against control and big business. Bring on the sequel! 🌟🌟🌟

Wil Wheaton is a good narrator, but I prefer to read my own fiction and to listen to non-fiction or total fluff fiction that I‘m not worried about interpretation. Wheaton‘s pacing is a bit slow for me, and I think the pace made all of the millions of 80s games and esoteric references a bit more difficult to wade (hehe) through. The meta-moments of Wil Wheaton narrating and talking about Wil Wheaton were amusing, but I probably won‘t listen to RP2.

Since Ready Player Two was recently published, I decided I should see what this was all about. To my surprise, I really enjoyed it. Not my normal reading fare; I think Wil Wheaton‘s spot on narration increased the appeal. Set in a future world lived largely online through avatars, Wade and a group of friends fight evil forces in an attempt to achieve a massive online quest. Once again I‘m reminded I need to branch out more in my reading. 4/5 ⭐️

Admitting I'm just jumping on the bandwagon. There's a movie and a second book, fine. I'm in. I started out reading the book but after reading countless comments about how great the narrator was, I switched. Glad I did. As a child of the '80s, the references felt good. The audiobook was smooth and enjoyable like watching a movie in your head. Not saying it's the best writing ever. It's entertainment and there's nothing wrong with entertainment.

I am so very late to this party but I‘m glad I finally got around to it! Fun and super nerdy with a TON of 80‘s references! Was definitely entertaining read that had me hooked till the last page! Ready Player One is my go to book at this point. I make it a point to read this once a year and not one time have I regretted it. If you love the 80s and pulp culture this is will be your new favorite book. It is an easy read with a huge pay off full of Easter eggs.
