I am not usually a mood reader. I just pick up the next book on the windowsill and go! 😂 But every once in a while every book on that windowsill looks stupid, and when that happens I pick up an old favorite instead. This week, my mood was for one of my all-time favorite romance series, the Bridal Quarter by Nora Roberts, which starts with this book. I love these! Four life-long friends who run a successful wedding venue together, each of them ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) in charge of a different facet of the business. Mac is the photographer, and the first book focuses on her as she (reluctantly) falls in love with Carter, a high school English/lit teacher. I love all the characters in these books so much. While the love stories are obviously the focus, the close friendship between them women is really the driving force behind these stories. There is plenty of humor, but nothing feels campy or ⬇ 13mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) ridiculous. This is probably my fifth or sixth time reading through this series - huge comfort reads for me that I love more every time I read them.

robinb I loved this series too! I read it YEARS ago but what I remember most about it was the close camaraderie of the friends. Roberts does “comfort” very well. ❤️ (edited) 13mo

tokorowilliamwallace I like the method/placement of the windowsill. My reading moods vary by the day or hour. I'm almost never making progress in the same book on consecutive reading sessions, or rather consecutively. 12mo

I finished reading Vision in White by Nora Roberts today and I absolutely adored it! Long time best friends Mac, Emma, Laurel, and Parker love weddings. So they work together at the vows planning weddings. I love Carter Maguire so very much he‘s the absolute best! He deserves the whole wide world, he‘s such a cinnamon roll. I loathed Corrine she‘s the absolute worst! I highly recommend! :)

Happy Reading!!📚📚

This book definitely wasn't for me. I gave up on it thrice and took me months to finish reading it. I kept putting it down because the whole time I was reading it I couldn't stop yawning. The only reason I stuck with it is because I really liked the male-lead character. I've been reading so many bad boy romances that it was a breath a fresh air.

I started this series on vacation last week - it's maybe my fourth or fifth time reading them through. I absolutely love the setting of four friends working together on their own business, and there is enough humor and warmth to carry me through the story, even if things do get steamier than I prefer to read!

1. Close Case by Alafair Burke
2. The Bayern books by Shannon Hale - excellent
3. Nora Roberts's Bridal Quartet is my go-to for a happy, relaxing, romantic series - the first book in the set is the one I've tagged. I really love the group of friends at the core of the story.

Sunraven I love Shannon Hale! Random fact: She has the same birthday as I do. 😆 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Sunraven - I went on a serious Shannon Hale kick a few years ago and read a BUNCH of her stuff! I really love the Bayern books and the Princess books. Austenland is fantastic, but I thought the sequel was honestly rather terrible haha I haven't read some of her children's books or Dangerous, although I keep meaning to. 5y
Sunraven I‘ve only read The Goose Girl and the first two Princess Academy books — I somehow zoned out and missed the other Bayern books and the third Princess Academy book, I think, haha. Need to get my butt back and gear and read the others. I kept meaning to read Austenland, too, but obviously that got derailed. Time for a visit to the library ... 😉 5y

TheAromaofBooks @Sunraven - I haven't read the third Princess Academy book, either, which I really want to as I quite liked the first two. I really enjoyed Austenland and have read it a few times. My sister (/best friend/chick flick partner haha) and I watched the movie Austenland a while back, and it was one of the few occasions where I had trouble deciding which I liked better ... 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Sunraven - since the movie was adorable and fun and so was the guy who played the lead love interest haha In the end, I actually wrote a post for my book blog detailing in which areas I thought the book was the winner and which areas I thought the movie was. Both are pretty fun, though. 5y
Sunraven Well, now I‘ll have to watch the movie someday, too! Another thing in the queue, haha... 5y

A best selling author with more than 200 books in print, Nora Roberts knows what she‘s doing. While there is nothing earth shatteringly special about this sweet, girly romance, it‘s special because it‘s just that, a sweet, girly romance... four lifelong friends sharing a wedding business always making someone else‘s dream come true. This is book one in a quartet, each shares the journey toward happily ever each friend.

This series was my first by Nora Roberts back in 2010. I really fell in love with the characters. I don‘t like romances typically, but somehow the 4 friends are flawed enough to be real, but aren‘t annoying about it. Having these 4 friends running a wedding planning business allows for plenty of characters to be introduced, & yet the main ones stay close and are able to interact. Funny, endearing and some scenes that are hot but not uncomfortable.

FashionableObserver I adored this series! You should check out her MacGregors series. There are tons of characters to fall in love with. She didn‘t get to finish the series (I believe something happened with the publishers), but what she did complete was do good. I‘ve even revisited a few of the books over the years. 6y
keys_on_fire @FashionableObserver I‘ve been buying her books at the thrift store this year and have several series on my TBR now. I don‘t think the one you mentioned is one of them, so I‘ll keep my eyes out for them! 6y

My first foray into Nora Roberts was ok. I liked some parts a lot (the wedding business, the ladies' friendship and all of their scenes). However, the hero was slightly too perfect and a bit of a pushover, the heroine was not the most likable (she was quite histrionic and over-the-top). There were reasons for the couple's tension in the book but it was a bit overdone. Plus it was probably 50 pages too long.

#readalong #romantsy @AliBG

Zelma Also, who talks to their cat like that? Roberts piled the geek factor a bit too high for the hero. 7y
AliBG Yes @Zelma (!!!) Exactly! But reading with you was fun. 7y
Zelma @AliBG want to talk details? I despised Linda and found her to be a lazy way to make me side with Mac. I thought Mac's reasons for being commitment-phobic were legit, but too over-the-top and cliche. Linda was a walking cliche which made the whole thing goofy. 7y
See All 21 Comments
AliBG (Double yes to your comment -- it's like she doesn't know any actual geeks and had to invent them based on Hollywood stereotypes) 7y
AliBG Ugh!! Linda! Over. The. Top. And then her uncanny mirror image, Corrine. Even Mac's commitment phobia felt really caricatured. 7y
Zelma @AliBG also, I didn't really like Mac all that much. She was kind of a flighty, overly emotional, bitchy friend and girlfriend at times. I'm glad it all worked out in the end, but I got tired of the "poor me, my mom has power over me, I don't know how to be happy" routine. 7y
AliBG And WTH was up with the constant mentioning of how students crushed on the hero? Like we were supposed to be impressed with him because sixteen year olds were? Gross. @Zelma 7y
Zelma @AliBG yes! Caricatures! I wonder if all of Nora Roberts' books feel like this. Because I was pleasant surprised at her writing, especially in the prologue. I feel like a snob for saying this, but it wasn't as basic as I expected. I mean, it's not classic lit or anything, but it was no Stephanie Meyer. 😬 7y
AliBG Yes. Though I did like that her friends pushed back a little bit. They stood up to her. @Zelma 7y
Zelma @AliBG 😂😂😂 hot for teacher! 7y
Zelma @AliBG yeah, I really dug the friends. I might end up reading the series solely to spend more time with their friendship. That was by far my favorite part of the book. And it was a significant part! 7y
AliBG But LOVED the scenes with hero's too-perfect family. And Mac's sense of catching "moments" as a calling. I wish that had been more developed positively (as opposed to self-deprecatingly) since it would've made her epiphany less abrupt. @Zelma 7y
AliBG Yes to friends. Though speaking of which I'm getting the side eye here and have to sign off... :) thanks for reading with me! 7y
Zelma @AliBG agreed! There was some depth to the story. It makes me curious about the back stories of the friends now. 7y
Zelma @AliBG 😆 let's do this again with another book! 7y
swishandflick I can definitely see how this series wouldn't be for everyone, but I must admit that I've always considered Nora Roberts to be the gateway drug that got me into the romance genre. If you decide to give her another go, you should try The Reef! One of my favorites of hers for sure (edited) 7y
Zelma @swishandflick thanks for the recommendation! I def plan to try more NR. Julia Quinn was my gateway drug and I, though I adore historical romance, I decided it was time to try something contemporary. 7y
swishandflick Nice! In that case, have you ever tried books by Susan Elizabeth Philips? My all-time favorite contemporary romance author 🙌🏽 7y
Zelma @swishandflick I haven't. I'll add her to the list! I see a lot of love here for Susan Mallory and Kristin Higgins so might give them a whirl. Elin Hildebrand looks likes fun too. I ran out of Julianne Donaldson and only have a handful of Quinn's so always looking for more options. 😀👍 7y
reading.in.brussels The first adult book I ever read was a Nora Roberts one. She introduced me to this awesome world of books, though I confess that I love her earlier books much more. The Reef is also a favorite of mine, along with The Villa, Three Fates, Honest Illusions, Private Scandals, Birthright and Blue Smoke. Might I suggest Jill Shalvis for contemporary romance author? She writes feel-good, funny, sexy romances 😊 7y
Zelma @s-b thanks so j ch for the recommendation. I'll check her out! 👍 7y

So my first Nora Roberts. Except for the first kiss, it was fine (yes, that's damning with faint praise) The inner conflict was really forced/heavy-handed, & the ending was too deus ex machina for my taste. Honestly the wedding business set up was the most interesting element.

I'll stick with Kristan Higgans & Susan Mallery for contemps, and I still prefer historicals a la Eloisa James, Julia Quinn, & Mary Balogh.

#romantsy #readalong @Zelma

Zelma Hmm, I'm not done yet but feel like this might be my feeling too. I really like the wedding business and friendships but finding some of the other stuff a bit over-the-top. I'll post more with spoiler tags once I finish. 👍 then we can pick it apart. 7y

I'm close to bailing on this one because it's not holding my interest. I like the In Death series that Nora Roberts writes as J.D. Robb, but without the addition of a mystery/suspense storyline, or a historical setting, I'm not into the basic romance.
