so-so

I am trying to not let my own feminism creep in here. But really I am disappointed by the ending. This is a book that started out okay, got great then just slowly let me down.
I am going to say it is a so-so but honestly I am in the fence. I enjoyed 3/4 of it but the sadness of the women was just a bit too much for me.

Not sure what I was expecting but I am loving this book!
Why did it sit on my TBR bookcase for years? Makes me wonder what other treasures are there.

Cortg I read Tara Road @ 18 years ago and loved it, but my taste in books have changed over the years and my guess is I would probably not enjoy it at all if I read it today 🤔 5y

Binchy was an excellent writer. You feel as though you really know her characters. Her plots are interesting and keep you focused all the way to the end. The house swapping between Dublin and the United States made for an enjoyable adventure and provided escapes for some of the characters who had problems. It was an interesting Buddy Read which @Andrew65 hosted. I would highly recommend Binchy's books to those who would like to visit Ireland.

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I liked the book and found the characters interesting. I think it showed how easy it is to fall in love with the wrong person and overlook a lot of their faults when you are seeing them through the eyes of love. 5y

Tove_Reads Of course! The got out of their comfortable zones, which did them good. Marilyn accepted the death of her son, and Ria saw that there is more to life than Danny, or started to realize it. 5y

EadieB Yes I believe they both benefited by exchanging homes for the summer. Marilyn learned to cope with the loss of her son and Ria was able grow more independent away from Danny. @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 5y

Tove_Reads I‘ve always wondered what‘s wrong with people like this. Nothing sticks. They have the right to do what they want and no one is allowed to be offended or angry. Plus, no matter what all these badly treated people should of course always be there to help out whenever needed. 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 I think it seems like a typical brother/sister relationship. They pick on each other but when things get serious they seem to bond together. 5y

Tove_Reads Pretty standard. The age difference is too big for them to share friends and interests at this stage in life. 5y

Tove_Reads It‘s quite normal to do new things once you‘re away and you‘ve taken the first big step. It‘s time for her to do things and let her subconscious figure out what her life will be like in the future. 5y

It really is nasty that Ria has to pay the price because Danny is such a creep! She never should have married him and now she will pay the price for that mistake. I like how she is forcing him to handle the children about how things will be in the future. 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 Sounds like an excuse. Danny never told Ria he was not happy. Ria was very happy in her marriage but Danny was never around enough for them to have alone time. He‘s making these excuses only because Bernadette is pregnant and he knows the affair is going to hit daylight. 5y

Reminds me @EadieB of the P J Tracy book (think it was PJ Tracy) we read together a few years ago that the English version had a na extra chapter with information that wasn‘t even in the US version! @Eadieb and I must have read somewhere between 100 and 200 books together but only 👇 (edited) 5y

Andrew65 For some reason my post on this question didn‘t save! Grrr... She had a chance to get away before she married but fell for his blarney about being a new man. Do me a favour! A leopard never changes its spot. He is a plain abuser and bully. Needs someone to stand up to him! He has Gertie so much under his control cannot ever see her being able to leave. TheBookHippie @Andrew65 where are the friends ugh @JacqMac I am a survivor I stayed because it was a better deal than home I was only 17 if you're raised to believe you're nothing and deserve abuse you believe it. I got pregnant and left because I didn't want my baby to suffer. So I always try to give benefit of the doubt. No one knows another's demons or hell. 5y

Andrew65 @TheBookHippie You most definitely have to give the benefit of the doubt but the friends know what is going on! Danny didn‘t even help! Sorry you had to experience such a s@#@#y early life 😢 I don‘t think Gertie with help from her friends has protected the children enough. If not careful that is what they will see as how a relationship works. Research show two possibilities they either repeat the patterns or learn that is not how it should be. 😔 5y

My hubby and I tried to help a friend and her little boy get away from her abusive husband. We gave her money and got her someplace. Not even a month later she went back to him. I feel horrible for her kid. But what more can we do. 5y
