I‘m going to say this is a pick although the first half was just kind of confusing and a bit boring. It‘s a time travel tale so obviously there‘s that unbelievable chaos to contend with, but it didn‘t seem remotely engaging ( I LOVED The Time Traveller‘s Wife so I am happy to disregard science for a good story) but then just past the mid mark some jumps happen and I was hooked, then another big bombshell drops. So strong second half for 3 ⭐️s

This was a good palate cleanser for me. I bought it several years ago from a list of the best time travel novels. The concept is interesting enough to keep the pages turning and I cared about the 3 main characters. Not fabulous prose, but I needed a break from slow going wonderful books that make you work for it This is how you win the time wars was from that same article and better.

Such a fun read!!! The time travel makes no sense, but if you shut that part of your brain off, you‘ll have a grand time.. I LOVED it!! I love how she goes from 18 to 51 in her first “slide”. The shock of her older body shook her. Thank God we age chronologically bc we have time to get used to it. Well worth the read. I had a great time.

Texreader Sounds fun!! 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Texreader it was so much fun!! I needed that book bc I started Desert Places by Blake Crouch (his first book is a horror book) and it was just too twisted, I needed a respite. This was so much fun- set in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. But she travels too. 1y

This story is an interesting concept of time travel where the main character jumps through time at different age intervals. I liked it as it jumped through the decades and had a large focus on the main characters love for music and how that influenced her life in a way through the people she met and would meet. I thought all the time traveling would leave the story a discombobulated mess but it really flowed well and had a good message.

Blarg!! The time travel rules in this book did not make sense at all!! I could not get past it because they kept on referencing them every time I‘d try to just get into each chapter and enjoy the narrative. 🤦🏻‍♀️

On Oona‘s 19th birthday, she wakes up in her own 51-year-old body. The book chronicles her life as she jumps from one age to the next…out of order. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

I did not expect this book to be so good. I‘ve read quite a few books that incorporate time travel or alternate realities in some way, but this one may be my favorite. Oona is such a great character and the many characters that are introduced are just as awesome. I loved how colorful and fun this book was and how it really just made me think about life and living in the moment. This was absolutely excellent. I loved it.

Have you ever sat and said to yourself “I wonder what past/future me would think about right now me.” This book is that. Ponder jumps in and out of her life every birthday to another point in her timeline. One day she‘s turning twenty and the next she‘s 51! Masterfully done, I think.

"... life had a system of checks and balances, and the bad breaks were tempered with good fortune. Even on this bleak day, hidden delights waited to offset the sorrow."

I forgot to post this review after completing it on New Year's Eve. I really enjoyed Oona Out of Order a lot more than I had expected to. I thought it was going to be more Hallmark-ish or "rom-comy" and was pleasantly surprised by the bit of dirt and depth it ended up having.

Injeanious I totally agree. I thought it would be more ROM-COM. It was alittle confusing at times but clever! 3y

I‘ve been saving this for my first audiobook of the year! Each New Year‘s Eve, Oona leaps to another year in her life. With each out-of-order year, the layers of her story drew me in more and made me think about fate and the blessings and hardships of life. I think fans of “The Midnight Library” might particularly enjoy this! 🎧

I think this book helped me get out of a reading funk. I was hoping for more and wanted to keep going on the Oona ride.
Every New Year's eve at midnight (Starting at 19) she time travels to a different year in her life. So lets say she might be 25, but wakes up in her 51 yr old body. It was disorienting at first, but as you learn more about her life it becomes enjoyable. Oona grows with wisdom and begins to look at the time she has in a new way.

Twainy Rats! This is on sale at Book Outlet. I wish I had gotten it! 3y

The hook was good and the twists were enjoyable. Oona is human to the point she is her own antagonist sometimes. I found Oona frustrating as a character often, but I would recommend the book. 3/5

I really enjoyed the writing but could not connect with the main character, Oona. I found her selfish and unwilling to see her impact on others until the very end.

Mattyholm Just finished the book and Oona was frustrating as a character for me. Maybe she was supposed to be immature because of her internal age? At points I didn‘t like her at all though. 3y

This was a fun and different spin on time travel! Each New Years Oona is transported to a random year of her life and thus lives her life out of order. She has to learn to make due with the circumstances she is thrown into and not spoil too many things for her future (and past) self.
I thought this was well done. It's not too confusing to follow the convoluted timeline and it's fun to go along with Oona as she pieces together her life.

This book was very wholesome. Very moral of the story. I really loved following her around in her many different ages and how crazy, amazing, and sad it was. That part I LOVED. Buuuuut, I am SO confused. I am the type of person who needs explanations, I'm not much on it is the way it is. I wanna how how, why, and everything in-between. And it left on so many unanswered questions! That's why I will have to give this a 3 star.

Margarita Montimore‘s Oona Out Of Order is definitely going to be one of my fave books of 2021! It‘s an innovative time travel and self-discovery story about a woman who lives her life in a non-linear manner and grapples with all the things she loses and gains from that. Poignant, captivating and totally unique — this smart and emotionally page-turning novel will linger for a long time.

What a unique story! I loved the concept but definitely have a few quibbles. First, Oona keeps making terrible decisions and we never get to see her grow out of that. Next I kept trying to wrap my brain around the logistics but that's impossible; I finally gave up trying to figure out how her leaps happen but I also couldn't understand why she didn't keep records of the events of her life so she'd be better placed for making choices each year. ⬇️

bookandbedandtea She kept a financial binder, which, sure, was pretty wise, so why couldn't she keep a record of people and situations that were important to her. I just feel like I'd have done things differently if I had to live my life like that! 4y
marleed I thought this was a fun and whacky time travel book. I always love reading the different ways authors conceive time travel! 4y
bookandbedandtea @marleed It was totally fun! I enjoyed it but I also kept trying to figure out the rules which, given there weren't any details to go on, also led to a touch of frustration. 🤷‍♀️ 4y

I thought the premise of Oona living her life out of order as the title suggests was an interesting concept. However I never really formed an attachment to Oona through out her escapades from year to year which kept me from fully enjoying this one. Sometimes with time travel plots I get too tied up in overthinking the mechanics of it instead of just going with the flow so that might have had something to do with my overall impression.

This time travel adventure leans more toward the sentimental than the sci fi end of the spectrum. The characters are really well drawn and there are some great twists.

I really enjoyed this book. Oona finds on her 19th birthday that she has jumped in time to another year, and that this happens every year on her birthday. It‘s an interesting concept that is well executed. I was invested in Oona‘s story and the people around her.

Despite an interesting premise of time-traveling Oona, the book fell flat. On her 19th birthday in 1982, she travels forward in time. With the end of every year, on her birthday, Oona travels in time, either forward/backward. She writes advisory letters and yet leaves her present self to live that one year. I liked the twist but Oona was a strange protagonist with little growth.
