Finding Chika: A Little Girl, an Earthquake, and the Making of a Family
Finding Chika: A Little Girl, an Earthquake, and the Making of a Family | Mitch Albom
Bestselling author Mitch Albom returns to nonfiction for the first time in more than a decade in this poignant memoir that celebrates Chika, a young Haitian orphan whose short life would forever change his heart.Chika Jeune was born three days before the devastating earthquake that decimated Haiti in 2010. She spent her infancy in a landscape of extreme poverty, and when her mother died giving birth to a baby brother, Chika was brought to The Have Faith Haiti Orphanage that Albom operates in Port Au Prince. With no children of their own, the forty-plus children who live, play, and go to school at the orphanage have become family to Mitch and his wife, Janine. Chika's arrival makes a quick impression. Brave and self-assured, even as a three-year-old, she delights the other kids and teachers. But at age five, Chika is suddenly diagnosed with something a doctor there says, "No one in Haiti can help you with."Mitch and Janine bring Chika to Detroit, hopeful that American medical care can soon return her to her homeland. Instead, Chika becomes a permanent part of their household, and their lives, as they embark on a two-year, around-the-world journey to find a cure. As Chika's boundless optimism and humor teach Mitch the joys of caring for a child, he learns that a relationship built on love, no matter what blows it takes, can never be lost.Told in hindsight, and through illuminating conversations with Chika herself, this is Albom at his most poignant and vulnerable. Finding Chika is a celebration of a girl, her adoptive guardians, and the incredible bond they formed--a devastatingly beautiful portrait of what it means to be a family, regardless of how it is made.

Mitch Albom never disappoints. I love this book so so so much. I think it is probably the best he has ever written. I had a tough time reading the ending few chapters as it reminded me so much of my late papa and what we went through together. This is a solid 5 stars from me. #mitchalbom #findingchika #BookReview #goodreadschallenge

I'm not going to cry..I'm not going to cry... i cried. I have never felt such love and gratitude on every single page and in every single sentence as i did in this book. What an honor to read about the making of a family during difficult times. My heart is so full and so broken at the same time. I couldn't put it down.

A memoir about Mitch and his wife taking a orphan under their wings to try and find a cure for her inoperable brain tumor.

The audiobook had little Chika's voice spread throughout which really made quite an impact.

This was a sad, but joyful and uplifting book about family and unconditional love.

So I moved with a block of a Barnes and Noble. I‘ve been trying to read to keep my mind off of a lot of stuff I have going on right now and have been binging through my romance and contemporary books. Ended up picking up way more things today than I was planning on doing 🤦‍♀️

Ironically I read a book about the TCHS, then follow it up with this endearing book about Albom‘s love for his adopted daughter. Quick, poignant read with plenty of sentimental observations. Loved the parts about Haiti and the orphanage he runs.

Like all of Albom‘s other books, Finding Chika is breaking my heart. Reading in small bites to prolong getting to the inevitable ending.

How do I even review this heartwrenching book?! Worst decision I ever made was waiting in a fast food restaurant for dinner and finishing this book because tears were flowing in the middle of the restaurant. I didnt realize this was Albom's first nonfiction in a decade! This book follows Mitch and Janine's journey operating an orphanage and then taking in Chika who ends up having a rare brain tumor. Per usual, his writing & story was amazing.

TheBookAddict Oh my, this sounds like I will be needing a box of tissue near me when I read this book. 😢 3mo

When you‘ve put a book down three times to cry before page 33 you know that Albom is at his Tuesdays with Morris best. This is a heart aching memoir about what it means to be family and how the bonds of love can hold fast no matter what. China is a unique and joyful child who leaves her fingerprints on your heart. This was an amazing love story to this strong, funny, courageous girl. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #NFNov. #TIL About the life of children in Haiti.

megnews My ebook hold just came in. I already have so many but I love Albom. Got to make a way to get to this quick. 3mo

Clwojick OH shiiiii. I'm an emotional person to begin with.... BUT I'm still going to stack this. 😆 Here's to hoping I remember not to read it the night before work. I always forget this with sappy books, and always go to work with bloodshot eyes and lack of sleep. 3mo
