This is the face of a stepmom who is perfectly fine with her step kids thinking she‘s mean for making them read one book by the end of the summer. You would think I was torturing them!

Reasons why @LittleMouse5708 is my Best Book Friend - random reminiscences about the Pizza Hut Book-It program lead to us creating a summer book club for the faculty at school... as usual, I'm ridiculously excited about it 🤣🤣🤣

LittleMouse5708 We need to come up with a prize system. Maybe once the group collectively hits a certain number of books we get pizza and drinks. 2y
Bookzombie I love this! Book-It was so great as a kid. 2y

MirrorMask I read Frankenstein and the Book Thief, loved them both. Frankenstein was a reread as I have read it before in college. I love that it explores the nature vs nuture theme ( before psychologist termed it). If Frankenstein (or anyone) had shown even a tiny bit of compassion, maybe things would have been different. 6y
BeansPage @MirrorMask I agree with you there. It would have been a completely booked had somebody shown the monster a little bit of compassion and kindheartedness. But why do you think they didn't? 6y
RenePenn Loved The Book Thief 6y
MirrorMask @TheReadingMermaid They've been conditioned to fear what is different. In Frankenstein's case, however, he realized too late that he was dabbling in things he had not business meddling with. 6y
CaroPi I read the book thief and Frankenstein. My favorite is Frankenstein because of the message it carries. Is timeless. It shows how abandonment transform people in monsters. Also because is a good critic to the science. At what point is the limit? 6y

Bostonmomx2 I haven‘t read any of those. 😳 6y
MirrorMask Reading The Iliad and The Odyssey was strange because while I've never read them, I knew both stories so I was a little taken aback by the structure of them both. The Iliad does not end with the Trojan horse or the fall of Troy, but with Hector's death. The Odyssey does not pick up where the The Iliad leaves off, but starts with Telemachus as an adult with Odysseus on the island with Calypso. 6y
MirrorMask I only read The Iliad and The Odyssey. I planned on reading Moby Dick, but I'm in the process of moving, so I haven't gotten much reading done (which is why I've been absent from Litsy). I enjoyed the poems by Homer, but I really wish I read them first before learning more about Greek mythology. I was expecting more detail, but I didn't realize that occurred long after Homer. 6y
See All 7 Comments
MirrorMask Thanks to Madeline Miller , my favorite characters are Achilles and Circe. 6y
Bronte_Chintz I have done my usual and started Moby Dick and not finished. I‘ve done this so many times and I‘m determined to finish it one day! It‘s a classic and I love classics but it‘s one I just can‘t seem to get through. I do however love and still love the Iliad and the odyssey. I‘ve read these a couple of times and I will always rate them. Mythology💖 6y
cewilf I enjoyed Moby Dick. I read for a grad class and it was great to revisit. Some sections are tough to get through though! And I read Call of the Wild. I teach it every year but it was nice to read just for myself! 6y
cewilf I didn‘t get to Twenty Thousand Leagues, but I have it on my TBR! Favorite character is definitely Buck. I love the perspective. 6y

Bronte_Chintz 1. My favourite was always going to Wuthering Heights. 2. My least favourite willl be Voodoo Queen as it was the one I didn‘t read and I can‘t bare to say any of the others were my least favourite. 3. Oh Emily! She is my least favourite of the Brontes, but I still adore her. 4. I totally failed at this but I‘ve discovered that I love the look of pressed flowed art. 5. Wuthering Heights will always be Marmite😂 6y
CaroPi I unfortunately didn't manage to do this. I had a surprise visit from my family and took all my free time. 😔 6y
BookwormAHN I couldn't get through The Feminine Mystique. I felt it was rather condescending and antiquated. I have not finished my reread of Interview with the Vampire yet, but I'm still going to pick it as my favorite book and Lestat as my favorite character 🧛🏻‍♂️ 6y
See All 16 Comments
BeansPage @Bronte_Chintz awe you should read it, it's really good! 6y
BeansPage @CaroPi no problem hun we'll catch you in the next section. We're doing Classics next 🤘🏻 6y
BeansPage @BookwormAHN I completely agree with you with the Feminine Mystique. I personally think that it's very dated but I also think that it's something that every woman should read to kind of remember where we were and how far we've come. And of course I definitely agree with you on Interview with the Vampire. Rice is just awesome! 6y
Bronte_Chintz @TheReadingMermaid I deffo will at some point. It‘ll be added on to my ridiculous TBR list 😂😂 6y
Updrifting The Feminine Mystique is fascinating from a social science standpoint imho (I was a French/poly sci major in college, went into mktg and now I write) but it proposes too severe a divide between our individualism and our biology, I think. The author kinda lost me when she spoke favorably of external uteruses so women could focus on self actualization instead of growing babies. 6y
Updrifting ...and I meant add after listing what I've done that I well know I'm not qualified to pass judgment! 6y
BeansPage @Updrifting I agree across the board with your analysis of the book. It's a very interesting read but at some point she loses you and almost becomes a little eccentric. Like with the outer uteruses. LOL 6y
MirrorMask Interview with the Vampire was my favorite. I'm going to have to finish the Vampire Chronicles now. Wuthering Heights is still my least favorite Bronte novel. I hate all the characters. I didn't read Voodoo Queen, but I might add it to my tbr list. I've always been curious about The Feminine Mystique because of it's impact on the women's movement in the 60s, but it's really dated. It's an important read, but not broad enough to be as relevant now. 6y
MirrorMask I enjoyed the art project, but I'm no poet. I'll struggle with the next section because I don't have paint (and I don't plan on buying any). I'm not worried though because I'll get creative with it. 6y
BeansPage @MirrorMask totally on your opinion of Feminine Mystique. 👌🏻 And don't worry so much about the art project I know you'll do fabulous with whatever you decide to do! You've done amazing so far so I'm really looking forward to seeing what you've got for me next section 😃 6y
BooknerdsLife I can‘t pick just one favorite but I love the Harry Potter series and it means something special to me & my daughter. My other favorite would be Jane Eyre cause I just love the character. My least favorite book I‘ve read is probably The Great Gatsby & Red Queen 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
BeansPage @BooknerdsLife we're actually having a discussion on the summer reading section posted above. This isn't a general discussion. But thanks for the input 😆 6y
BooknerdsLife Oh thank you😆🙈 6y

BookwormAHN Favorite book: Ready Player One, favorite character: Art3mis, Least favorite: Accelerando, More: I loved Ready Player One, I have no idea what was going on in Accelerando, the language was way over my head 😼 6y
Traci1 I only finished Ready Player One, which I really enjoyed. Stopped the audio of Accelerando fairly early on. It was so confusing. Maybe I'd have gotten it more in print but audio was the only way I could find it. 6y
cewilf I loved Ready Player One! I really liked Art3mis and enjoyed the little twist with her character at the end. Accelerando I found very confusing and unfortunately gave up early on. I didn‘t have time to get to the art project because I was finishing up my last couple weeks of teaching, but I look forward to going all in on the next one! 6y
See All 6 Comments
MirrorMask I enjoyed Necropolis for the most part. Maggie is my favorite character. I did not like any of the other books. Science Fiction is my favorite genre so I was disappointed that I liked so few of these books. 6y
MirrorMask I would like to applaud everyone that finished Accelerando, you guys are All Stars 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 6y
Bronte_Chintz Loved Ready player one! Not my usual book at all but glad I have it a go! I‘m going to add the people that bailed on Accelerando I‘m afraid. Science fiction is not my thing, but ready player one surprised me so thank you for that! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 6y

Ok guys, here's the schedule for my #SummerReading2018 program. I know it's a little hard to see but if you need clarification on anything just ask. When listing out the books the Rs mean "Required", the Cs mean "Choose 1". I tried to make everything as fun and as exciting as possible. I also tried to branch out and hopefully make others do the same.

BeansPage @MirrorMask @4thhouseontheleft Don't worry you guys, the art projects are honestly just for fun. They will not be graded on how good they are. They will simply be graded on whether they have been done or not. everyone has their own style and individuality especially when it comes to art. I personally find this impossible to grade or to say one is better than the other. I'm sure everyone's artwork will be amazing 🤩🤩🤩 7y

These have been sitting by my desk since I got back to work. They contain Summer Reading Club items. I am in denial. If I don't open these, I don't have to deal with SRC, right? 😭😭😭😭😭😭 #librarylife

Brenley Sorry, but I'll be ready to get these kids out of my classroom for a couple of months! Lol! Good luck! I miss the librarian life sometimes! 8y
LindsayReads @Brenley Hahaha, I bet! It's the set up of SRC that I dread, more than the actual implementation. I've been working on revamping it for the past 3 years from being the hot mess my predecessor made it. 🤤 8y
BookInMyHands Oh, I hear you! We are revising our program this year to be less staff intensive, which will be great, but I have to rework EVERYTHING. So. Much. Work. 😳 8y
LindsayReads @BookInMyHands Yes! That is exactly what I've been doing. Who knew making it simpler would be so much work? Off-hand, how much do you ask kids to read? 8y
BookInMyHands We ask them to read 20 minutes since that's what our schools ask. We try to keep them in the reading habit. They get a book when they sign up, a coupon book for reading for 3 weeks, and a finisher prize at 6 weeks (although there are 10 weeks of SRP at our library). Then we have a bonus program to encourage kids to read different kinds of books. They can enter for a chance to win as often as they finish the sheet for an "experience" prize. 8y

Of course, after I said yesterday that my library job never takes me to actual libraries, this morning I spent a few hours here training other librarians for children's summer reading programming! That's right folks, your #locallibrary starts this serious business EARLY. 📚📚📚

Reviewsbylola I love that my library has a great summer reading program. I am not surprised that they take so much effort! 8y
BookInMyHands We've had the performers scheduled since September and today we figured out our program details. Next week we send out the letters for donations. Here we go! 8y
Zelma Yes they do! Our programming coordinator at my last place was a busy bee all year and booked next year performers as soon as summer ended. A good program can't be last minute. 😀 8y

Saturday librarian-ship can bring me down, but Jon Scieszka's got my back.
