Day 24: The Polar Express

Day 18 of #adventrecommends ... an excellent work of narrative nonfiction that details the true story of the 1879–1881 arctic voyage of the USS Jeannette and the crew's struggle to survive after having to abandon their ship in the polar ice.

Hampton Sides is a fantastic story teller. He can take any historical account and render it in a way that you feel the compulsive need to turn each page. We read this for a family book club and it was enjoyed by all. The USS Jeannette was trapped in ice and its occupants were forced to trek across the ice in an attempt to live. Snow blindness and unbearable cold plagued the men for months. 🥶 #frozen #movember

I read this one a few years ago - not my usual read, but I was riveted. Sides writes a good narrative nonfiction! The crew of the USS Jeannette #HitTheNorth and get trapped in ice in the Arctic. But, that‘s only the beginning of the story. Sides recounts the 2 year struggle the crew faces to survive in the harsh climate. #RedRoseSeptember

I know I post about this book often but I really can‘t recommend it enough!

The men in these books were all #sofaraway when they ran into dire straits (😉😉😉) I am inspired by these survival stories of physical and mental endurance. I‘m awestruck by the fact humans would even attempt seal hunting or exploring in the Artic for months or years while I sit in my comfortable home.

Finally! A nice Spring day. The rest of the group I‘m training with went to eat lunch but I‘m gonna sit here and enjoy a sandwich.

On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to the North Pole. The ship was trapped in pack ice – for TWO YEARS. Then the hull was breached, forcing the crew to abandon it as it sank, and the men were marooned 1,000 miles north of Siberia with few supplies. Thus began their long march across the ice in a race against time — and the elements. This book read like a thriller — and it‘s all true.

Day 8: #adventrecommends

#winterkills in this saga of a exploration expedition. The USS Jeannette is stranded amongst the ice off of Siberia and the men aboard are in a fight for their lives as they battle the elements for TWO YEARS.

Hampton Sides is probably my favorite NF writer. His books are fast paced and have you on the edge of your seat. Also, the Litsy blurb pegs this at 999 pages. That‘s wrong—it‘s at least half that. #winterwonderland

Explorers! I don‘t know where these people get their courage and dangerous curiosity but each time I read a book like this I‘m always thinking how #doomed they are. I can‘t understand it. #aprella

This is one of my favorite nonfiction books of all times. In 1879 captain DeLong sails a ship with 37 men to the North Pole at a time when exploration Fever was big. The ship gets stuck in the ice until it finally sinks, so the men must set off to try to get back to safety. This is one of the greatest stories of survival, tenacity, and courage as the men battle frostbite, snowblindness, and each other. #wevegottogetoutofthisplace #marchintooz

I‘ve listened to a good amount of historical nonfiction in this vein, but Sides blew me away with this incredibly well researched account. The tone was engaging and surprisingly heartrending; I had tears in my eyes several times. Highly, highly recommend. Now excuse me while I go find everything else he‘s ever written.

I love a nonfiction about polar exploration expeditions and all the drama, tragedy, and adventure they entail. Sides does not disappoint with this story of the USS Jeannette. I can't imagine living in an era where someone can sail away it you expect not to hear anything from them for at least 3 years.

This book...perfect for nonfiction lovers! It had me spellbound. In narrative nonfiction style, Sides describes the events that happened to the USS Jeannette during the race to reach the North Pole. It's harrowing, it's sad, and it's very reflective of the mindset of those who wanted to conquer one of the last spots on Earth. #ice #sizzlinsummerbooks

Enjoying my lazy Sunday with a book and some ice cream.....💙💙💙💙

I highly recommend this book for you nonfiction readers out there. We read this in our family book club comprised of males and females and everyone liked it. It is a great story of the men who were exploring the North Pole when their ship became stuck in the ice for months. It is a great story of survival, bravery, and courage. And it is a book that made me cry. #riotgrams #bookthatmadeyoucry

These four books are all set at sea. It is a setting I LOVE. These four just happened to be on my upstairs bookcase. I've read the two on the left and can't recommend them enough. They are both fantastic and we read both of them as part of our family book club (they were picks that could appeal to the men too. I had intended for this to be for @bookriot 's #ReadHarder challenge to read a book set more than 5,000 miles from your location but after a bit of research it looks like it might not qualify, so I'm going to read another. But I did enjoy this book. I had never heard of the USS Jeannette so this was really fascinating. Warning! The dogs don't make it. Just for those who are sensitive to that. Good read and had me looking at a map.

The book itself is written well, but I don't have time right now for the life story of every minor figure involved in this situation, down to the most minute detail. It's seven chapters in and the Jeannette isn't even close to setting sail, let alone getting into trouble. Moving on ☹️

I love when the next bookmark in my rotation fits thematically with the book I'm using it in.

Kicking off #BoutofBooks this morning by skipping Twitter for reading on my bus ride into town. Hoping that this week I'll beat my reading time from the last Bout of Books.

I love it when an author can get you on the edge of your seat while penning a non-fiction book. This book had a very good Ken Burns feel to it and I honestly could not stop listening to it! The narrator read very well. The ordeal these men went through was beyond imagination. Thank you Hampton Sides
