Highly Illogical Behavior
Highly Illogical Behavior | John Corey Whaley
Teen and adult fans of Matthew Quick, David Levithan, and Rainbow Rowell will adore this quirky story of coming-of-age, coming out, friendship, love...and agoraphobia. Sixteen-year-old Solomon is agoraphobic. He hasnt left the house in three years, which is fine by him. Ambitious Lisa desperately wants to get into the second-best psychology program for college (shes being realistic). But how can she prove she deserves a spot there? Solomon is the answer. Determined to fix Sol, Lisa thrusts herself into his life, introducing him to her charming boyfriend Clark and confiding her fears in him. Soon, all three teens are far closer than they thought theyd be, and when their facades fall down, their friendships threaten to collapse, as well. A hilarious and heartwarming coming-of-age perfect for readers of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and All The Bright Places, Highly Illogical Behavior showcases the different ways in which we hide ourselves from the worldand the ways in which love, tragedy, and the need for connection may be the only things to bring us back into the light. From the Hardcover edition.

This was a YA novel about a young man who has agoraphobia caused by anxiety. A former classmate who barely knew him when he still went to school decided she would “fix” him so she‘d have a topic for a college application essay. Since I‘ve read books before, I could guess how that would turn out but this was still a good read. Everyone is written in a sympathetic way, which is important.

This was my #BookSpin for May

The depiction of Soloman‘s struggle with anxiety were really authentic! I also loved his relationship with his parents, & his grandma was a hoot. Lisa drove me NUTS, & not in a good way. Her motivation/plot was terrible & immoral. There wasn‘t enough reasoning for her actions, & her “growth” felt rushed. Also, Clark was not fleshed out enough to be his own character. Finally, while the first half was interesting, the last half dragged. Meh. ★★★☆☆.

I really liked this book. I was sucked into the strong themes about friendship and the view of mental health relating to teens. The characters were so endearing and I really loved them. There were such excellent moments that really looked at tolerance in a lot of different ways. This was a really great book ❤️

Love this book. Solomon is #SoClose to #Disaster because he has severe agoraphobia and panic disorder. But that all changes when he meets Lisa and her boyfriend Clark. Over time, Solomon is able to venture into his backyard, but Lisa and Clark have a secret that may derail the whole friendship. 4⭐️

This is especially cool because Solomon and Clark are huge Star Trek: TNG fans. #StarTrekSummerMay #MayMovieMagic

Cinfhen This sounds really fun but is it VERY YA??? I‘m getting some Eleanor vibes too....I‘m #soclose to stacking 😜 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I would recommend it to people who don‘t generally like YA. The characters are more adult than the usual YA, and there‘s not the whiny, romantic drama that seems to pervade YA these days. It‘s more about friendship and honesty. I really like these characters. They‘re more mature than I was at 17. 😂😂 6y
Cinfhen Yay!!! I‘m stacking (edited) 6y

I just started this great #StarTrekSummerMay / #MayMovieMagic tie-in

Solomon Reed hasn‘t left his house in years. Lisa Praytor wants to take him on as a project to give #SecondChances to return to school. But Solomon is wondering, “#WhereIsMyMind?” with his severe OCD and panic attacks. However, he has a secret place to escape, the holodeck, modeled on ST:TNG‘s no less, he built in his garage.

Cinfhen This sounds too YA for me but I‘ll be curious to hear your final thoughts 💖 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen YA to me is like roasted turnips - I want it just a couple of times a year - and I can‘t convince anyone else in my family to try it! 😂😂 Whaley is one of the best YA authors out there. His books elevate the conversation a bit. 6y
Cinfhen Ha!! Love that analogy!!! Roasted turnips sounds good actually!!!!! 6y

Loved this one too! The character development for Solo is well done, although I wished the others had more development. A good meaning and message, and a nice ending.
(Symptoms of being human, OCDaniel, and this book all had something to do with Star Wars or Star Trek, and the word “Solo”?????)

Any Whaley fans? Corey's from a town near me, I've met him in passing 2 times at cons, and I'm friends with him on Facebook. But Friday at a small YA Lit con, I got to chat with him. As in sitting beside him at a session, & we just chatted & caught up on life. Pretty cool. I remember not being interested in his first book when it came out, but I had to read it in grad school, & I really enjoyed it, & I've loved his two other books!

Sol is someone with Agoraphobia and hasn't left his house in 3 years. Lisa is college bound to get a psych major wanting to fix Sol for her essay to her 2nd choice college. Interesting premise but some aspects fell short. One being that just having friends can't really fix a deep seated mental illness and 2 gay is suppose to be some heat aspect in this book but it's just barely there.

This book is about Solomon, an agoraphobic teenager, and Lisa, a former classmates who hopes that her rudimentary psychological skills will cure him so that she can write about it and win a scholarship for a prestigious psychology program in college. It is about how their lives intertwine and change in unexpected ways. It is about growing up, about maturing, and about these characters figuring out who they really are. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WanderingBookaneer I had to stop almost at the end of this one to ask my friend @gibblr if the book was going to break my heart. It did, but not in the way I thought 7y

Lisa, confident and ambitious, has her sights set on a great psychology school - and she unwisely thinks that agoraphobic Solomon is her ticket to getting there. Surely she can draw him out and cure his ills. A book of friendship, growth, and I really enjoyed this book and it‘s honest insights into mental health.

Solomon hasn‘t left his house in 3 yrs. Agoraphobia causes him extreme anxiety & panic attacks. Lisa can‘t wait to get out of town & thinks that by writing an essay about “fixing” Sol she can get into a college psychology program. Along with her boyfriend Clark they visit him & form an unexpected bond. A sweet & funny story, while still delving into a serious topic with respect. The ending was rushed but otherwise a good read.

Fun, clever little story about three teens and the ties that bind them. I was piqued because I have a teen who manifests some of the same tendencies as the main character. Although they're more different than they are alike, it was fun to draw the comparisons as I read. I recommend this to both young male and female readers, especially bookish types who enjoy or at least appreciate sci fi. My own teen would hate the 'Truman Show Ending,' though.

Robothugs I'm not sure where you line is for too much - but I think both of them are good and really on the typical YA side. My blurb title also deals with LGBTQ a bit. Also, a very good one that wouldn't be too YA at all is the tagged book if you haven't read that yet. If I know where your line is I can judge better! @Cinfhen 7y

LOVED THIS BOOK! ?? Especially since the ending wasn't a "friendship will cure EVERYTHING!!" Because we all know that's not how anxiety works, and this exemplifies how to write a happy ending that's not "everyone gets cured yay"

I even liked Lisa a lot! She grew so much in the book so although some reviewers don't like her (understandable tbh) she became my favorite character ?

Definitely recommend this book!

Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley
×
This book gave me an Eleanor and Park feeling at the end. You know, when a book ends leaving it up to the reader to decipher the characters emotions and what happens after the book ends. I'm trying to get adjusted to those types of books, not too fond of them at the moment. However, that doesn't change the fact that I'm in love with Solomon Reed.

Teacher, Jessica S.: "'Highly Illogical Behavior,' by John Corey Whaley is my favorite read of 2016. Agoraphobic Solomon is confined to his house after suffering a mental breakdown at school. Lisa, a classmate, wants to help Solomon for all the wrong reasons. The characters are ultimately the highlight of this book: quirky, likable, and flawed in a way that reminds the reader that nobody is perfect." #BestBookRead
