Margaret Beaufort believed absolutely that her son Henry Tudor (later Henry VII) was destined to be king because God willed it. Philippa Gregory‘s version of her was manipulative, cold, and heavily involved in the disappearance of the Princes in the Tower. I didn‘t like her at all, but I appreciate her determination to secure the throne for her son. The end of this book is exciting and fantastic, as Henry faces Richard III in battle for the crown.

The long and short of it is that Margaret Beaufort is perhaps one of those characters I hate to actually (kinda) like. She wants to appear as this gentle woman; whose godly etc. But she comes off as a righteous, spiteful and judgmental woman who above all is ruled by jealously. The women of War of the Roses are definitely much more interesting then the men lol.

Found this beauty at a used bookstore some time ago but hadn‘t felt like reading this time period…. I need a switch up so … it‘s time!! Do you like my #bookbeau? It was a gift from my daughter ❤️

We have two books from the Plantagenet and Tudor novels by Philippa Gregory : The Red Queen and The White Queen.

I started the Plantagenet and Tudor novels last year and am reading them chronologically. I have been surprised by how much I am loving them! Didn‘t love this one as much as “The White Queen.” I found Margaret Beaufort to be annoying compared to Elizabeth Woodville. But, I love the historical trivia I am picking up! e.g. Anne Neville died during a solar eclipse which freaked everyone out and was seen as an omen of Richard III‘s death. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

When I first discovered these books I binged; I devoured. All Tudor and Plantagenet novels are compared to these. I have learned so incredibly much. It still distresses me when I remember Margaret Pole's death.

I can do without Gregory's Wideacre Trilogy. In fact, it is one of the worst series.

I did like the book, although I loved the #whitequeen! But I find myself on the edge of my seat wanting to know what is happening next , but the next book in the series is #thekingmakersdaughter , so I feel like I‘m going to go backwards in the time line

To say I‘m excited is not enough! I finally will have the first 2 books in the series!! My brother asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told him- he‘s not the bookworm lime me so I was worried he wouldn‘t understand how important this is. .. it he didn‘t even ask any questions he just went and searched all the bookstores until he found them!! How awesome is he??!!

I've read a couple of Philippa Gregory's books before and many of the main characters are quite religious. Margaret is religious almost to the point that she is blinded that she cannot see that some of her choices are wildly sinful. It makes her a difficult character to read about.

I have underestimated my book needs for this trip. 😕

Just finished this one on my flight. I never get this right. Anyone have any good bookstore recommendations in Seattle?

Great book. Infuriating in spots as it depicts the poor treatment of women as property. Margaret Beaufort seemed to be a zealot of extraordinary delusion with Joan of Arc envy. It only served to make me even more curious about her place in history as the mother of Henry VII and grandmother of Henry VIII. Fortunately there are references at the back of the book.

This conversation so clearly illustrates my feelings anytime I hear someone asserting what they claim to be the will of their particular deity. Funny how they always seem to agree completely with the mortal claiming to speak on their behalf. 🤣😂

Our local library is having their semiannual book sale this week and I went a little wild with the historical fiction. I‘ve been slowly collecting all of Philippa Gregory‘s books. Most of the ones they had, I already have... but I found three I still need! I‘ve already read Wideacre, but it was a library book and I‘m dying to read it again!

Bath time reading 🌊📖

I had a hard time rating this book. It started off strong but then it became dull. Halfway through the book, I was dragging me feet. Nonetheless I enjoyed the character development of Margaret. She started off as an innocent 12 year old forced into marriage after marriage. By her third marriage, she chose her husband and steered the rebellion. Therefore I gave it a 👍. #goodreadschallenge

I‘m starting another book. Already 100 pages in! 😊. It is very difficult to not get mad at how women, much less, 12 year old girls get treated in those days. I could not imagine being married at 12! Ick! #currentlyreading

The 2nd book in the cousin's war series, this is the story of Margaret Beaufort, mother to Henry VII. The story is set in the same timeframe as The White Queen and I enjoyed this perspective. I didn't find Margaret to be likable, But found her to be realistic. IMO, Philippa Gregory is one of the masters at writing historical fiction. She is well researched and her writing well detailed. I look forward to the next in the series

#lyricalapril #maps I adore Phillippa Gregory, though given the weight of the subject and the books, you have to be in the right mood. I've read both her Tudors and her Cousins War series, though I think I have one of each sitting in my unread stack, simply because I haven't hit the mood. Each of those series is a buy upon release for me though :)

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. It served as an excellent continuation of the overall story line but I had difficulty with Margaret's narration. I would rate the book a solid 3.5/5 stars.

Spent the majority of my work day reading which is always lovely and made some excellent progress. I have mixed feelings on the main character Margaret, as she lacks the more endearing qualities of prior characters. Her piety and sense self of importance can come across as whiny, immature, and self entitled. Yet, her devotion to her son is what humanizes her and makes her character more believable.

The second in Philippa Gregory's historical trilogy is a well-researched affair that shows the political dangers and brutality of the time but I found Margaret herself to be a weirdly stilted character who didn't really come to life on the page and for all her rivalry with Elizabeth Woodville there isn't enough interaction between the two to give it flesh or bite.

It takes real skill to write in a POV of a totally unlikable narrator but Gregory does it so well.
