The Brooklyn Follies
The Brooklyn Follies: A Novel | Paul Auster
From the bestselling author of Oracle Night and The Book of Illusions, an exhilarating, whirlwind tale of one man's accidental redemption Nathan Glass has come to Brooklyn to die. Divorced, estranged from his only daughter, the retired life insurance salesman seeks only solitude and anonymity. Then Nathan finds his long-lost nephew, Tom Wood, working in a local bookstorea far cry from the brilliant academic career he'd begun when Nathan saw him last. Tom's boss is the charismatic Harry Brightman, whom fate has also brought to the "ancient kingdom of Brooklyn, New York." Through Tom and Harry, Nathan's world gradually broadens to include a new set of acquaintancesnot to mention a stray relative or twoand leads him to a reckoning with his past. Among the many twists in the delicious plot are a scam involving a forgery of the first page of The Scarlet Letter, a disturbing revelation that takes place in a sperm bank, and an impossible, utopian dream of a rural refuge. Meanwhile, the wry and acerbic Nathan has undertaken something he calls The Book of Human Folly, in which he proposes "to set down in the simplest, clearest language possible an account of every blunder, every pratfall, every embarrassment, every idiocy, every foible, and every inane act I had committed during my long and checkered career as a man." But life takes over instead, and Nathan's despair is swept away as he finds himself more and more implicated in the joys and sorrows of others. The Brooklyn Follies is Paul Auster's warmest, most exuberant novel, a moving and unforgettable hymn to the glories and mysteries of ordinary human life.

‘I was looking for a quiet place to die. Someone recommended Brooklyn, and so the next morning I traveled down there from Westchester to scope out the terrain.‘
A divorced, retired, ex-insurance salesman who has moved to Brooklyn surely encountered his #firstsnowonbrooklyn 🤷‍♀️.

Picked up the tagged book today. Also ordered A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley. Also In The Dark by Cara Hunter. Pic of me & hubby ... the small granddaughter got camera shy & turned away. A verse from hubbys song Princes Street 1983 on blackboard behind us. Sofia came home with some pretty bookmarks

TrishB Great haul 👍🏻 and brilliant catch on the lyrics 😁 6y

OK, so this is a redeemed grumpy old man novel. What makes it so impressive is the lovingly drawn cast of characters, in all their flawed beauty. Particularly the women. Auster writes some fabulous, strong women who are deeply appreciated by men not for their looks. It's also a book about books and stories, and the stories are weaved skillfully in. Particularly liked Henry, the loveable art forger. Might be too sweet for some tastes though.

Drowning in #mtbr 🏔️ at the moment, I think it's a combination of finding The Explosion Chronicles quite difficult and just being tired, stressed and with a slight cold. Hoping to finish a book shortly and this is going to be a #libraryfail if I don't hurry up and read it.

Nathan Glass moves to Brooklyn after retirement after alienating his family and friends... in hopes to die in peace. Instead he is reunited with his long-lost nephew, Tom, in a used bookstore and adventure ensues. I love Auster‘s writing, although the second half of the story definitely took a bit of a wild turn and he must have been thinking #letsgetridiculous 🤪

Mdargusch Sounds fun? 7y
mcipher I‘m curious - and I loved The Book of Illusions so I am stacking this! 7y
Cinfhen Premise sounds good but a ridiculous adventure might not be for me?!? 7y

emilyhaldi @Cinfhen @Mdargusch @mcipher I mean, it‘s not too too ridiculous, but it takes a whole different turn from the first half of the book! And definitely forced me to stretch my version of reality just a bit to consider certain scenarios believable 🤨 Overall it was def a pick for me and I look forward to reading more of his books!! Meh. Some of this, I loved. Some of it though was clumsily handled and a couple chapters were just eyerolls.

Pretty sure I'm over-thinking my last read of the year.... But these 3 are in the running. Anyone have specific plans for their last book of 2017?! 🎉

Kappadeemom Mine is A Little Life because it is 700 pages and I‘ve already hit my reading goal for 2017. So maybe I will finish this one right after the NY ;) 7y
BarbaraBB Make it Tin Man! Please! It will be so rewarding, I promise 😉 7y
Leniverse I still have several books to complete before the year is up. Whichever of them is the last one I've finished when I run out of time is my last book of the year. 😂 7y

I love Paul Auster and this is a great one #setinabookstore. Also, can I just say how much I really hate it when bookstores (I'm looking at you, Barnes and Noble) put their stickers directly on the dust jacket. So annoying. #seasonsreadings2016

Zelma I hate that too. Sometimes, they come right off but often, not so much. 8y
