Jazz | Toni Morrison
In the afterglow of a clean triumph--her widely celebrated, Pulitzer Prize-winning best-seller, Beloved--Toni Morrison moves to even higher ground. This, her eagerly awaited new novel, Jazz, is spellbinding for the haunting passion of its profound love story, and for the bittersweet lyricism and refined sensuality of its powerful and elegant style. It is winter, barely three days into 1926, seven years after Armistice; we are in the scintillating City, around Lenox Avenue, "when all the wars are over and there will never be another one...At last, at last, everything's ahead...Here comes the new. Look out. There goes the sad stuff. The bad stuff. The things-nobody-could-help stuff." But amid the euphoric decisiveness, a tragedy ensues among people who had train-danced into the City, from points south and west, in search of promise. Joe Trace--in his fifties, door-to-door salesman of Cleopatra beauty products, erstwhile devoted husband--shoots to death his lover of three months, impetuous, eighteen-year-old Dorcas ("Everything was like a picture show to her"). At the funeral, his determined, hard-working wife, Violet, herself a hairdresser--who is given to stumbling into dark mental cracks, and who talks mostly to birds--tries with a knife to disfigure the corpse. In a dazzling act of jazz-like improvisation, moving seamlessly in and out of past, present, and future, a mysterious voice--whose identity is a matter of each reader's imagination--weaves this brilliant fiction, at the same time showing how its blues are informed by the brutal exigencies of slavery. Richly combining history, legend, reminiscence, this voice captures as never before the ineffable mood, the complex humanity, of black urban life at a moment in our century we assumed we understood. Jazz is an unprecedented and astonishing invention, a landmark on the American literary landscape--a novel unforgettable and for all time.

Cinfhen I want to recommend a Morrison book for bookclub which one would you suggest?? 2w
Centique This was my first Toni Morrison and I fell completely in love with this book. 😍 2w
Tanisha_A @Cinfhen I have read only one as of now, The Bluest Eye, and that should be read (strongly suggest it). But i have heard brilliant thoughts about Sula and Beloved. You could consider this one too (see above comment by @Centique). Is this for a Litsy bookclub read? I would love to buddy read Sula if so. 2w

Thought this was an appropriate choice for black history month. I actually got this book at a book swap which is why the book is a little rough around the edges. I personally like knowing my book belonged to someone else. It has a different energy from newly bought books. Not sure what I‘m getting into but what books have you gotten at a book swap?

I'm upping my goal by a few books this year because in 2018 I ended up reading a whopping total of 75 books of my initial goal of 52! I've never read so much - very proud!
My main reading goal in 2019 is to finish Toni Morrison's published fiction.

Laura317 Well, that‘s a depressing thought! I guess we really never know how we are perceived as a race. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Laura317 The benefit of being in the majority I‘m guessing sadly. Although it is set in the 20‘s if that helps any, and the man who taught the lesson spent his childhood still in slavery, so the thought might be somewhat dated....however it was written in the 1990‘s so probably not a lot. 2y

The plot is twisted & Morrison is always a struggle for me to start reading until I sink into the prose & just let it flow over me. She writes of such dark things, but in a way it almost reads like poetry. Although I wouldn‘t give the surface plot high marks, where the story shines is the mini-backstories of its characters as they reveal the many facets & hardships of African American life from slavery through the 20‘s.

Gezemice You finished it already! I do want to read more Morrison, she is amazing, but one needs to be mentally ready to accept the heavy load. I agree, it takes time to get into the flow but when you do, it is worth it. This is on my list! 2y

One more February group read done! This book is short, but not quick. The story weaves in and out of the past and present of husband and wife Joe and Violet Trace of NYC, formerly of rural...Virginia? The present being in the 1920s. My big question: who is the narrator of the last chapter? I‘m confused. Good, but certainly not my favorite by Morrison. #1001books #192019 #1992

When you start a beautiful audiobook, read by the author, with some great smokey bluesy jazz interwoven in the background of some parts & get home thinking you‘ll pick up at the same point you left off, only to realize your library‘s audio, so beautifully done, is severely abridged! Guess that‘s why I felt like I was missing a few transitions! I think I‘ll start this one over from the beginning. 🤦‍♀️ Why even bother making an abridged version!

hilded Too bad 🙈My audio version is almost 8 hours, so I guess you missed quite a bit. Not read by Morrison herself though, mine is a 1993 recording read by Lynne Thigpen. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @hilded That‘s what I thought as soon as I picked up the book and tried to flip through to where I thought I‘d be from the audio and thought...I don‘t remember any of this! What!!! Why bother to make a nice author read version and cut out over half of her story! 2y
hilded It's strange, I agree! I can understand abriged versions of a book to make them child friendly, like for instance 'The Count of Monte Cristo' and 'Oliver Twist', but for this book it's just weird. And also a bit strange that she agreed to record an abriged version herself. The Jazz music in the background sounds amazing though 🎼😊 2y

Dorianna I can‘t imagine how an abridged version of Jazz could make sense. I don‘t remember the book even being all that long. 2y
Gezemice Oh, that sucks! Abridged versions only make sense if a book has a lot of filler. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Dorianna According to Goodreads the paperback is only 230 pages. 2y
Daisey I looked at your image and realized that‘s the edition I listened to! Wonder how I missed that it was abridged when reading the library info. Probably, like mentioned above, I never even considered it as a possibility! Now, I‘m really going to have to reread. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey I looked at mine again, and still can‘t see that on their page where I borrowed it. Either it‘s in tiny type I‘m missing somewhere, or they didn‘t list that. 2y
Daisey I went back to the library page and did find where it said abridged, but it doesn‘t seem to always show up depending on how I click through to the book info. I can‘t quite figure it out. The only other clue is that from the audio, it tells me the library also has the book available, but from the book it does not reference the audio as also available. 2y
minkyb Good question. Why bother! 2y

I listened to the audiobook of Jazz last week, and I thoroughly enjoyed that it was narrated by the author and included music. Yet, there were a few things I wanted to read as well so I downloaded the ebook. I appreciated the insight Morrison provided in the foreword about her process and thinking for this novel, including these key lines.

I planned to read the ebook, but the #audiobook was available. I enjoyed listening to Toni Morrison narrate & the snippets of jazz music were a wonderful addition. I may revisit the print since I sometimes felt I was missing transitions & would like to flip back & forth between some pages. Overall, I appreciated the storytelling that melded together several characters‘ point of view around a central event.

UPDATE: abridged edition

Currey I loved reading this book. However, knowing it is Toni Morrison narrating and the addition of music makes me think I should also experience the audio version. 2y
Daisey @Currey Yes, I wasn‘t sure about it at first, just because I know with her style I sometimes like to flip back to reread, but it was wonderful to listen to. 2y

Toni Morrison is one of my favorite writers and this one is among my favorites by her. The story of young Dorcas is told by her aunt, her lover, her best friend and the lover‘s wife. Structured like a jazz piece, each character‘s narration shows a different side of Dorcas: intelligent, charming, impetuous, and stubborn. And since it‘s Morrison, it goes without saying that the prose is lush and evocative.

I'm trying to figure out my exact thoughts on this one. I love the whole premise of the book. The characters aren't quite what I expected - but that isn't a bad thing. I think I need a re-read when I'm not so stressed/preoccupied with work. I did love it, I just feel like I missed so much. Will definitely come back to this one again later.

I guess I am the exception to the rule. I am not that fond of Toni Morrison as many others here. It's not that I don't like it, it is just that I find her way of telling a story a bit too smooth, too preachy. The story line I did like, though. #1001books
