From the author of The Witch Boy trilogy comes a graphic novel about family, romance, and first love. Fifteen-year-old Morgan has a secret: She can't wait to escape the perfect little island where she lives. She's desperate to finish high school and escape her sad divorced mom, her volatile little brother, and worst of all, her great group of friends...who don't understand Morgan at all. Because really, Morgan's biggest secret is that she has a lot of secrets, including the one about wanting to kiss another girl. Then one night, Morgan is saved from drowning by a mysterious girl named Keltie. The two become friends and suddenly life on the island doesn't seem so stifling anymore. But Keltie has some secrets of her own. And as the girls start to fall in love, everything they're each trying to hide will find its way to the surface...whether Morgan is ready or not.

This was super cute.. loved the art. The characters were adorable, but I really wished it had one more page with a “7yrs later”. #Pride #NotAnotherGraphicMonday

Sticking with the unwinding using graphic novels #NotAnotherGraphicMonday — and found this on Libby. Looks cute already :)

This story was so cute but I would have liked a small epilogue to see what happens 7 years later. I love the mix of Celtic myth & coming out story. I love to see other mythical creatures come to forefront. 8 out of 10 for me. #summerread #queerstories #selkies #gl #woc

Decided to take a side quest with this sweet graphic novel.Sweet coming of age story. I heard good things about it. Friday night reading fun. Nothing like winter cold & graphic novels on my iPad with herbal tea ☕️I will say this would be a fun summer read with boba too. #gl #queerstories #comingofage #graphicnovel #fantasy #ya

This is a favorite on Booktok but it sort of fell flat to me.
A quick sapphic YA read.

This graphic novel had a very cute story and gorgeous, vibrant art. It is a coming of age tale with magical selkie transformations and a queer love story. Morgan struggles with revealing her true self to her friends and family until Keltie whirlwinds into her life.

A cute selkie story which deals with some of the struggles of coming out and of worrying about being your real self. It's not quite clear to me why Morgan struggles with it so much, though? Her family seem warm and accepting, and OK, it's a difficult time for her with her dad leaving, and her brother's acting out, but...

Though of course, teenagers don't have to do things that make total sense. Goodness knows I didn't!

I have seen this on some other book lists previously and was delighted when I found it in my local library. This was adorable and a perfect coming out story. I feel like I related to Keltie more than Morgan; even though I never had a “label”, I was always pretty honest about who I was. I didn‘t know what pansexuality was until the last couple years. Highly recommend! #graphicnovel #thegirlfromthesea #pride #panpride #pansexual #lgbt+ #pridemonth

Cute, gay (wlw) graphic novel. 15 year old Morgan just wants to blend in, but she has a secret. Keltie is not like other girls, but she needs Morgan‘s help. Will Morgan break her status quo to help a girl she has fallen for?

Literally so obsessed with this. So cute and funny and lovely. They say you have to love yourself first, but sometimes you learn to love yourself by loving others.

Very cute! I enjoyed this story about a selkie who falls in love with a human and seeks help for a human-caused environmental disruption problem. I love Ostertag's art and storytelling style quite a bit. Also I may or may not have flipped when the seal pups made an appearance! #LGBTQ #GraphicNovel #Environment #Comic #Selkie

A sweet coming-out (graphic novel) story with a magical & environmental bent. Morgan hides her true self in an effort not to make waves — until Keltie, a Selkie, falls in love with her & renders her well-laid plans impossible. What‘s here is adorable! It‘s honest & wonderfully, awkwardly funny but I wanted more: more development of the love story; more glimpses into who Morgan‘s friends are; more of her accepting, flawed, tender, & broken family.

This book reminded me of the movie where the mermaid become human with a true goes kiss. This book was very interesting with a plot twist at the end and and twist at the start. Such a great read would definitely read it again

My library hold came in for this today, and I just read the entire GN in about an hour!

It‘s a sweet simple story, YA sort of fairytale retelling? About a selkie and a high school girl, and young love. Nothing too profound, but lovely artwork and a good story.

This magical YA F/F love story is set in a fishing community in Nova Scotia. It is on the slight side, but an overall delight (and it left me also wanting stories about the MC's friends).

And it will do nicely for the #newin2021 prompt for #booked2021. @Cinfhen @Barbara @4thhouseontheleft

I was in a graphic novel sort of mood today! 😃💕📚 Checked these out from the library! I've never read The Umbrella Academy or Fence before, so I'm really looking forward to those! #librarylove #librarybookhaul

DaveGreen7777 Oooh, I‘ve heard really good things about both “Fence” and “Umbrella Academy”! Enjoy! 😀 3y

Branwen @GondorGirl I'm excited to read it! I keep hearing wonderful things about it! 😃 @DaveGreen7777 I finished the first volume of Fence last night and am officially OBSESSED! It's so good! 😍 I already grabbed the next two volumes today at work! 🤣😂 3y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I've enjoyed Fence a lot! I took fencing for gym class in college so I understand the fundamentals of the sport, but my lack of skill makes me even more intrigued about the strategy portrayed in the books. 3y
Branwen @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards That's really cool! 😃 3y

This is a fabulous graphic novel (with amazing art) that meshes a queer romance with Keltie mythology: sign. me. up. Sweet romance, good friendships, family growth, and a small surprise at the end all make for a captivating story.

Another fabulous graphic novel from Molly Knox Ostertag, creator of Witch Boy! This modern day retelling of a selkie story revolves around a teenage girl who has a plan to tell her family and friends she‘s gay after she leaves home, but falling in love interrupts those plans.

Morgan is a closeted lesbian, terrified of how her little island town will react, when she meets a selkie, Keltie, who changes all her plans. This is a hefty graphic novel. But it‘s full of discovering oneself through changing plans. The world is constantly changing for new events, so too must your plans. What‘s refreshing is that you can really see how much these two love each other, being so tender. I like the friend group issue. end made me cry

Okay. The mom gets points for trying. Like, when she got back home - after running away being outed - she bursts out the closet. This graphic novel is doing well showing a caring and trying mother. Especially with their acceptance talk after this

monalyisha I *loved* the Mom. She‘s so earnest & awkward. 2y

Such a sweet graphic novel about a closeted girl nervous about coming out and the selkie who comes to land for her. Loved the illustrations and the story, both about falling in love and finding happiness in being true to yourself. Just a good, pure read from start to finish.
