An O, The Oprah Magazine Titles to Pick Up Now A People Book Pick A New York Post Best Book of the Week A Parade Most Anticipated Books of Early 2020 A Bustle Most Anticipated Books of January 2020 A CrimeReads Most Anticipated Crime Books of 2020 A She Reads Most Anticipated Thrillers of 2020 An electrifying work of literary suspense from internationally bestselling author Katrine Engberg, The Tenant--heralded as a "stunning debut" by #1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs--follows two Copenhagen police detectives struggling to solve a shocking murder and stop a killer hell-bent on revenge. When a young woman is discovered brutally murdered in her own apartment with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. In short order, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who's a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Esther also turns out to be a budding novelist--and when Julie turns up as a murder victim in the still-unfinished mystery she's writing, the link between fiction and real life grows both more urgent and more dangerous. But Esther's role in this twisted scenario is not quite as clear as it first seems. Is she the culprit or just another victim, trapped in a twisted game of vengeance? Anette and Jeppe must dig more deeply into the two women's pasts to discover the identity of the brutal puppet-master pulling the strings. Evocative and original, The Tenant promises "dark family secrets--and a smorgasbord of surprises" (People).

First book in a series set in Denmark, two police officers are assigned a case where a young women has symbols curved into her face. I thought it was OK but not enough to continue the series.

This was a very fast paced detective novel that had me guessing until the very end. I was interested to see how the plot unfolded and who was involved in the murder. It was an interesting story with lots of twists and turns. There were some aspects of the book I thought were a bit over done, but it was entertaining all the same.

Debut mystery/thriller, first in a series. Publisher superlatives aside, this was a pretty predictable whodunnit. Set in Copenhagen and featuring police detectives Jeppe Koner and Annette Werner who are rushing to solve a couple of grisly murders that appear to be.based on a draft manuscript. Good premise, but the perpetrator is revealed too early and the the remaining plot limps along to the end. I‘ll try her next in hopes for more complexity.

The first in the Kørner and Werner series
Thank you Joey for the book!
An excellent first book. A woman is murdered in the apartment below Esther, and the crime scene is just like the murder mystery Esther is writing. Jeppe and Anette are unlikely partners trying to solve the case. I'll definitely be reading the next book

The author has a third book coming out, and it sounds intriguing, so I wanted to read the first and second books in the series. This wasn‘t what I was expecting. It is a good mystery, extremely dark, but the book is overall so depressing, that I almost didn't finish it. I can't say that I really like the detectives, nor do they like each other, but there were, surprisingly, some really good laughs. I‘ll continue the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Excellent murder mystery- great cast of characters - this is not a thriller - reads like a crime drama - follow police as they investigate the crime, the characters and plot are well written so it held my interest the entire time - no parts were boring or uninteresting to me. Highly recommend if you enjoy murder mystery (not a cozy or thriller) -

This is between a so-so and a pick for me. I felt like there was crucial information that the investigators just never followed up on and made some poor decisions. I liked the first half or so of the book and ended up skimming the last bit. Not bad but not the greatest I‘ve read. 🌟🌟🌟

Book 136

I listened to this available audibook that I'd recently seen on social media. The killer copies a murder from an unpublished manual by carving the face of the victim before death. All elements are there but not remarkable.

To be fair, this book coincided with a horrible reading slump so I've chipped away at it for weeks and that likely made the reveal less satisfying than it normally might have been. There were some intriguing plot points, but the author had to go out of her way to retroactively make the pieces fit rather than having an organic "aha!" moment. I also wish I'd listened on audio bc I just know I butchered the pronunciation of names and places ⭐️⭐️⭐️

“A killer who‘s grown up in an orphanage?” Anette couldn‘t help curling her lip at the word.
“Maybe.”
“An orphan, who grows up to become a knife murderer? Tell me, are we in the middle of some fucking crime novel, or what?”
“I don‘t know, Werner. Is that what we are?”

It's all gone a bit meta.

Jeppe glanced down at the fallen flower petals and pigeon droppings in the gravel. At the moment, the combination seemed like a fitting image of Copenhagen: a mosaic of flowers and shit.

No one is going to hire Engberg to advertise Copenhagen as a tourist destination based on this! (Although thinking about it, Rebus worked for Edinburgh...)

A young woman is killed in her Copenhagen apartment and an unusual connection to her death is discovered. There are some good twists in here and some satisfying complexity, but it‘s too slow to get started and there is an anti-feminist tone in places that I didn‘t like. Between pick and so-so for me.

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg. Just finished this and it was a good mystery but not much of a thriller for me. A young woman is murdered in a building with only four tenants. There is a unique mark carved into her face. Who is responsible? What does the carving mean?

Finished! TBH, I have mixed feelings about this one. Once more we have a murdered girl, found by an old man on his way to throw out his garbage. There are so many little nuances that I ended up missing (as the reveal at the end made me realize), which I feel is a good thing but the main cop guy was *so annoying*, it's hard to really recommend this with a thumbs up 🤔🤔

This one started out slow but I'm glad I stuck with it. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, there was another twist in the story. I enjoyed the side story of Detective Korner and look forward to seeing what happens to him as the series continues. The only negative thing I'd have to say is the amount of exclamations during normal conversations. I don't know if it was because it was translated but it was a little annoying.

I was lucky enough to win this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. It‘s an advance copy that won‘t hit the shelves until 1/14/20.

What a good read! I had a hard time putting it down! It‘s very suspenseful, and keeps you guessing until the end. This book contains stories within stories.

English isn‘t the authors first language, so the book was translated. That often comes with challenges, which is why I rated this book with a 4 instead of a 5.

I haven‘t read much Nordic noir, so I don‘t have much to compare this to, but I did enjoy this. Some parts were predictable but there were definitely still some twists and turns. The ending was a bit long-winded for me and the detectives weren‘t my favorite — broken but still seemed shallow. However, it was still entertaining and will keep an eye out more from this author.
