I have a #OnceUponABookClub YA box for this #Wicked title but have not gotten around to reading it yet. I had to order it based on the “Ethiopian-inspired debut fantasy retelling on Jane Eyre” blurb. Now that this prompt has put it front of mind, I may have to move it up closer to the top of the stack! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I really liked it. It was a very quick read - kind of spooky, kind of romantic. It's described as an " Ethiopian Jane Eyre retelling" which a lot of people argue about, but I thought it had a lot of Jane Eyre-esque elements. I believe this is the author's first novel, but I look forward to reading her others.

Ive been listening to this audiobook for the last few days as I get the library ready to close up for the summer. It wasn't terrible, but wasn't very good either. I think marketing it as a Jane Eyre retelling sets the reader up for disappointment .

I think I liked this. Maybe. But I was a little stunned when I got to the middle. Because it felt like it should be over soon. It's not even that long. It's a Jane Eyre retelling with actual ghosts and curses. (Sorry if you haven't read Jane Eyre. 😂) Maybe just reread Jane Eyre like a normal person and skip this.

I haven‘t read Jane Eyre (TBR) but after this spooky reimagined story, I might need to read it soon!

Andi is hired to exorcise the evil eye from a haunted manor. There are bleeding rooms, a murderous hyaena and a little sexual tension🫢

It‘s a sad day when you‘re really enjoying a book - when you enjoy roughly 75% of it - and then things go downhill.

I was immediately into this book when I heard the Jane Eyre retelling concept. As a big Jane Eyre fan, it was fun seeing the way the original was adapted to this story. I felt like it could have been taken further and elaborated on. That said, it was sweet and charming. It had a bit too many romantic moments for my liking, but overall a good read.

I absolutely loved this book. It was creepy, atmospheric and mysterious. I loved all the characters. I was invested in the story from beginning to end.
I highly recommend this book.

I read this Jane Eyre inspired YA book with my YA for Adults book club, and I loved the addition of African magic. I'm not sure it worked as well as a YA as it would have an adult novel, and of course Rochester is still Rochester, so not relationship goals. It definitely has horror element going for it (blood rains from the walls!), and it's got ghosts and curses and exorcism of a sort.

First, I want to start by saying that I am sorry that I completely disappeared from the winter games. I was very busy at the job and it resulted in a reading slumped. I spent the entire month of December playing on my Switch.

That being said, I don't have a reading goal this year. I am simply reading whatever I feel like reading.

📚 Currently reading this book. This is 1 of 10 of my birthday bookhaul.

I really did enjoy the supernatural elements, but in my opinion the book had a religious agenda that doesn't sit well with me. It also felt like it was trying to normalize and forgive child absue. I didn't like the romance. Magnus was a sniveling brat and Andromeda was too pious and self-sacrificing. I thought it sent a bad message.

I listened to this on audio and wished I had read it as I probably would have liked it more.

I was drawn to this book for its gorgeous cover and promising synopsis. I hate to bail on a book - especially after I've invested hours in it - but over halfway through and I've got to call it. I found the story terribly disjointed, and there were a number of times throughout where I felt as though I must have skimmed over something important. It's as though Blackwood had this world all planned out, but forgot that the reader can't see it.

Finished this on New Year's Eve. I enjoyed a lot about the story. It had a fun plot and lots of creepiness. It's badly edited, though, and that spoiled what could have been a good book. I was often flipping back a page assuming I had missed something, but, no, it was just disjointed and underdeveloped. It felt like parts of the plot and pieces of the backstory had been removed that would have made it make a lot more sense.

I finished this at the beginning of the month and loved it!!! There were a few world building questions I had -- for instance, if people were disappearing from there why didn't every staff member run from the hills?? -- but other than that I just loved this Jane Eyre retelling. I particularly liked how the author brought the religious aspects of the original text into this world. I gobbled it up!

I loved this book. It's set in Ethiopia where Andromeda is working her first job as a debtera, someone who cleanses houses of the evil eye. It was described as a Jane Eyre retelling but I didn't really see it that way.

Too scary for me.

I loved this book! It‘s an Ethiopian retelling of Jane Eyre with magic intertwined. I just wished it went more into detail.

Starting this one this morning. I've never read Jane Eyre but I was completely lured in by the beautiful cover.

I was excited to listen to this gothic fantasy romance before Halloween, but it didn‘t really do it for me. It was atmospheric and haunting, but I wasn‘t a fan of the insta-love and thought the magic could have been explained better. Maybe it was just a little too YA for me? 🎧

It‘s YA. Be prepared for the tropes! It‘s a debut! It‘s tangentially an Ethiopian inspired spooky retelling of Jane Eyre. I loved Andromeda & Magnus!! The MC is in training to be an exorcist. She spends time in a gloriously creepy castle. The romance is sweet & the horror is a light touch. Perfect choice for a quick, fun story for Halloween.

Good stand alone debut & narrator.

I've never heard of this book or the author, but it does sound super interesting. I guess it's a retelling of Jane Eyre. I've never read that either. I know roughly what it's about.

I wanted to love this, but it is 1 of those books that seems to stretch and stretch but have no depth. The main character falls for out rich grumpy young man the 2nd day they know each other, bug nothing about him screams lovable.
The atmosphere of the house is fantastically built, if this had just been about Andi & the house it would have been amazing. This felt a bit like a failed balance of too many story lines.

Climbing into bed early to finish this book with a glass of wine, and of course I perfectly match my bedding, down to my nails painted the same color as my throw. Doesn't everyone? 😏😆 I think I need to expand my personal color palette 😂
