Super fun outer space adventure. When a salvage crew happens upon a derelict luxury liner they must unravel the mystery of what happened or be the next victim. Shades of Alien as the evil corporation makes all the decisions and all crew is expendable. The ending became unbelievable as it seemed there was no way to survive. A really good mix of science fiction and horror.

Today is shaping up to be really busy at #GRCC, so I ran over and got my books signed first thing. SA Barnes was really sweet and signed a bookplate for me to use in her new book (coming out next year). I'm hoping to have time to go over and chat with the authors more later, but we'll see.

I don't typically do horror, but SA Barnes is going to be at an event I'm working next month, so I thought I'd give this haunted house in space story a go. I don't know how scary die-hard horror fans will find it, but I am NEVER going into space, thank you very much. 😳 Barnes has a new space horror coming out next year and I'll certainly have to build up the nerve to check it out.

A space horror/haunting book. I enjoyed this. More psychological than gory or violent. Although there is a bit of both.

16 books in August. Tagged book was my favorite in part because I was surprised by how fun it was & how much I liked it. Lots of love for Darrow so Light Bringer was exciting. McBride & Jones are automatic buys & I loved both. Scents and Flavors, a 13th c. cookbook, was fascinating. Gods of the Wyrdwood a dense but intriguing start to new series. Cursed Bunny & Everyone Knows Your Morher is a Witch were great & I love anything by Tynion.

#Two4Tuesday …on a Wednesday since I‘m late…😬

1. Tagged. Don‘t Fear the Reaper is a close second.

2. Loved that it was a locked room mystery set on derelict spaceship lost in the deepest reaches of the known galaxy (in the book‘s world). I also loved that had just the right amount of creepiness and suspense to make it unputdownable. I was surprised by how much I liked it.

This was a fun one & everything the blurbs promised it would be—a haunted house space horror story that‘ll keep you turning the pages…I recommend lights on! 😬 A salvage crew happens upon the remains of a luxurious spaceship, think the super fancy ship from The Fifth Element, lost decades ago. They decide to salvage it but once onboard, they start finding bodies & it‘s a race to figure out what happened before it happens to them too.

Going for a book with blurbs like “ultimate haunted house story, in space,” and “immersive, atmospheric space horror,” and finally, let‘s not forget “this book will make your skin crawl” for some bedtime reading. 😬 Not sure this is the BEST decision I‘ve ever made but 🤷‍♀️, I‘m doing it. Haunted house space horror that will make my skin crawl here I come!

A small craft encounters a luxury space cruise ship that disappeared 20 years ago. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the passengers died horrifically violent deaths. Can the crew of the LINA find out what happened considering their team leader Claire's sketchy past as the sole survivor of a colony wiped out by disease? A great story from start to finish! Extremely tense and atmospheric!

I don't read horror but got influenced by a booktuber I follow. Started while I was on vacation and the pace was great but I didn't finish it so switched to audio so I could read it while it was day out, because I'm a big 🐔 😂. Do wish I could have finished the paperback but still solid read.

This science fiction-horror novel is a mash-up of Alien and The Titanic. A small space ship discovers a luxury passenger ship that had gone missing years ago. I enjoyed the setting and descriptions, but I found the characters a bit flat, and only defined by a single trait. I was also disappointed at the solution to the central mystery of why the luxury ship went missing. If you want ghosts in space, at a fast pace, this will do.

Soft pick. This is my second haunted ship book this year. I enjoyed the “then” plotline more than the “now” and was on edge as the LINA crew began to experience the horrors of the Aurora. I wouldn‘t say I liked the romance; it was unnecessary. I think this book would‘ve benefited from a changing perspective between the Aurora and the LINA crew instead. Overall, it was spooky and disturbing, and I did like the big reveal.

Jari-chan I'd also have preferred a changing narrative 👍 1y

This was my #BookSpin for October and I indeed did finish it in time, just didn't get around to review it 😅
Well, this book could've been perfect for October. The idea was great and some of the characters could've been very interesting. And that's it: Could have been.
Sadly, Barnes focuses on her main character which is a poor girl to be sorry for, but totally unfit as a team leader. How did she get that job again? The love story is just... 🙄 ⬇

Jari-chan The atmosphere is totally missing. Barnes wants to show the inner thoughts and fights of her MC, but that just didn't work for me. More and more I got annoyed by the plot and the characters as well.
I'm glad it's over now.

Sci fi horror thriller = creepy and atmospheric. A luxury space ship missing for 20 years is found by a maintenance crew. Hoping for a cash payout, Claire and team board the ship and find horrific signs of what happened to the passengers. Then something starts to haunt Claire's crew too. Two timelines didn't achieve anything and neither did using present tense. Claire is a difficult character but she's brilliantly performed by actor Lauren Ezzo.

I'm a bit confused about how they initially thought something valuable would be enough to stake their claim but are now convinced that their company would cover it up so they need to bring the whole ship back?? Did I miss something?? Also I don't know why the "then" sections are in present tense? Unless Claire is somehow actually dead, it makes no sense because there is a "now" also told in present tense.

I really enjoyed this. I was hooked in right at the beginning & it never lets up. If you have ever visited an abandoned space or building, you know how eerie it is when there are no people there now, & that's without the dead bodies. I found it very atmospheric & I was actually nervous in some parts. The big reveal is actually a little less exciting than I'd imagined, but it didn't spoil the overall experience. 5🌟

I know this has mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed this Sci-fi/Horror/Paranormal story. A scavenging ship with a Captain with a dark past comes across a long missing space cruise ship. Very creepy scary things happen. Our main character is a bit annoying but not so much to detract from the story. 4⭐️

Okay, there are many good elements included with this story that make it an excellent horror story based in space. What took away from my love for it was, 1) I didn't love the female heroine. I could not connect with her, she seemed like a whiny wimp at times. 2) There was predictability in certain aspects that had me feeling impatient to move on with things, not a good feeling. So, yeah, mixed feelings with Dead Silence.

Dead Silence is a science fiction novel set in space in the year 2149. It leans heavily into horror and the thriller genres when a communication repair team investigates a ship missing for 20 years to try to figure out why everyone on board is dead. I really enjoyed this novel and thought it was well written and engaging. There was just enough action and suspense to keep my interest but it still had plenty of room for character and world building.

This was a fantastic idea, it started out super creepy. I think comparing it to Titanic and The.Shining in space is accurate. The ending fell a little flat and I think it would have been more effective if Claire was currently living the terror, not recounting it.

A luxury space liner went missing decades ago but now, right as Claire is facing great uncertainty, her crew has found it. With the huge potential of the salvage in mind, they go on board and not so good things start happening. While I didn‘t find this at all scary, I liked the story and thought the final answer of what happened was a really good one. Solid debut.

Lots to love here. Great atmosphere, some creepy and gory moments, and an intriguing story. I much preferred the first half (first half was 4.5-5 stars, second half was closer to 3 stars) and the structure of the book sometimes hurts the pacing and atmosphere, but I still really enjoyed this.
