'There is no one on earth quite so wonderful' STEPHEN FRY BAFTA-winning actor, voice of everything from Monkey to the Cadbury's Caramel Rabbit, creator of a myriad of unforgettable characters from Lady Whiteadder to Professor Sprout, MIRIAM MARGOLYES, OBE, is the nation's favourite (and naughtiest) treasure. Now, at the age of 80, she has finally decided to tell her extraordinary life story - and it's well worth the wait. Find out how being conceived in an air-raid gave her curly hair; what pranks led to her being known as the naughtiest girl Oxford High School ever had; how she ended up posing nude for Augustus John as a teenager; why Bob Monkhouse was the best (male) kiss she's ever had; and what happened next after Warren Beatty asked 'Do you fuck?' From declaring her love to Vanessa Redgrave to being told to be quiet by the Queen, this book is packed with brilliant, hilarious stories. With a cast list stretching from Scorsese to Streisand, a cross-dressing Leonardo di Caprio to Isaiah Berlin, This Much Is True is as warm and honest, as full of life and surprises, as its inimitable author.

This is wonderful! Definitely audiobook it if you are a fan - both her performance and storytelling are sublime! If you are uncomfortable with frank language and casual sex talk, perhaps skip this one. If you get a kick out of her bawdy, naughty turns on Graham Norton you will probably enjoy this.

Bk17 of my #BookMail is a paperback of Miriam‘s first memoir about her childhood & her exploits at school & university thru to meeting the Queen. If you haven‘t watched her Graham Norton appearances, I highly recommend them. She‘s funny, extremely naughty & has absolutely no filter. I love she‘s now an Australian citizen, she‘ll fit in here perfectly!

julesG Her stories had me in stitches. 10mo
zezeki I mostly know her from The Graham Norton Show, and Harry Potter movies, and she's always so fun to listen to! 10mo
TheLudicReader She is my spirit animal. I love her. 10mo
Knitmaths I loved this book so much, was laughing out loud constantly!!! Such a wonderfully fulfilled life. It‘s one of my recommendations at the Library!!!!! 10mo

World of Books have kindly agreed to replace the tatty items they sent out. I'm still looking forward to reading them, especially the Horowitz, the Ware and Miriam Margolyes' autobiography.

I suspect I will be passing the Richard iii book on to my Grandma. He is her favourite 😅

TrishB He is my favourite too ❤️ 13mo

#12booksof2022 @Andrew65 July

I enjoyed this so much on audio (a format I hardly use), I've pre-ordered her next (Oh, Miriam!), on Audible too!

Andrew65 This author would be a good read. 1y
CarolynM I loved it on audio too. I think you‘d miss out if you read the hard copy instead. 1y

First book of #NovelNovember finished. @Andrew65

I don't like biographies. Or memoirs.

I really enjoyed this book. Miriam Margolyes is my spirit animal. I want to be her when I grow up. 😁

I definitely had Miriam‘s voice in my head while reading this, and I loved the three sets of photos! I am definitely more prudish than she is though, and so I am glad I read this in print rather than audio 😅

maxfolsom Prudish is not a word I would ever use to describe her! 2y

5 ⭐ and a lot of 🤣🤣🤣 - do the audio if you can as she does voices for some of the people in her life.

Tagging @Cinfhen as I know you enjoy a good audio & as a Jew, Miriam presents some interesting thoughts on Israel/Palestine. Only problem is that this comes towards the end so you have to get through the rest first!

My only criticism is that she doesn't spend much time on the HP films ⬇️

jenniferw88 which is one of the reasons why I bought the book, but as she says she is more interested in reality than fantasy. 2y
Cinfhen I‘ve stacked!! I‘ll probably use my Audible credit 😁Thanks for the recommendation xx 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Cinfhen it comes up on sale on audible sometimes. That‘s how I got it. 😄 2y

@DrexEdit I think PDFs are quite common with Audible... this is what the website says for the tagged book (which will be a 5 ⭐ listen).

DrexEdit Super cool! Thanks so much! I'm not a big audio person so this feature is new information for me. 2y
TheLudicReader She is so funny. 2y
jenniferw88 @DrexEdit neither am I! It may be more common for NF though, I can't think of a reason why there'd be one for fiction. 2y

I could listen to any of these audiobooks when I #walk to the post office to send #litsylove etc, but most of the time music wins as I find I don't stop to get my breath back as frequently.

Miriam Margolyes is a force of nature and her autobiography, read by her, is as funny as it is interesting.

Thanks for this thread, Andrew, it's been fun to see everyone's favourite books month by month.

I loved having Miriam Margolyes keeping me company on my morning walks. She has an opinion about everyone & everything & isn't afraid to share it. She is as indiscrete & as foul mouthed as you would expect & frank about her views of the world (proudly leftist). I'm sure the printed book would be interesting & entertaining, but it would be such a shame to miss out on all the voices & accents she uses to bring everyone to life.

Ericalambbrown I fell in love with her waaaay back in 1991 when I wandered into Kenneth Branagh‘s movie Dead Again. She had a small part but her scene with Derek Jacobi was wonderful. I will have to find this! 2y
squirrelbrain I really want to read this one soon - I love Miriam! It sounds like it was great on audio too! 2y

...for years I had been a fan of Call the Midwife, the long running BBC series [set] in the East End of London in the late fifties; the acting was of a high order, the stories were gripping and the attention to period detail formidable. ... I knew my agent had mentioned me to them...Every time I appeared on a TV talk show, I'd look straight at the camera and say, 'Please cast me in Call the Midwife. 'Not a dickie bird.

This is almost a so-so for me, but I know part of the problem is that I‘ve been sick almost the whole time I‘ve listened to it. Parts of this were really tedious, but other sections were fun or charming. One takeaway-don‘t fuck with Miriam. If she likes you, she will tell the world how amazing you are. If you‘re an ass, she will name and shame, in detail, without blinking. She does not pull her punches and I respect that.

GingerAntics I saw her on Graham Norton and I really got that impression. She does not take anyone‘s BS, she does not care who it is. 2y

Marjorie Westbury was the queen of Radio in her day. She played Paul Temple's wife, Steve, in the famous detective series. She was small and dumpy like me, but had a clear, warm sound and knew how to use it. She made such an impression on one of her listeners that she was left £42,000 in their will.
So far, this hasn't happened to me.

They encouraged my reading and studying from an early age. I liked Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories and Miss Blyton's oeuvre in general; I didn't have an elevated literary world. I joined a library; in those days, local councils put money into libraries and the Oxford City Library was magnificent. I used to get through about six books a week. I loved stories set in girls' schools, I think I read nearly all fifty-seven of the Chalet School series...

charl08 Photo: Oxford Central Library. Pretty sure there's a lot more glass walls and purple sofas since MM's time. 2y

Mummy was extremely house-proud, and she did all the housework in the nude. It was a tad discomforting for our maids and au pair girls, but she liked to get it done, then have a bath.

I had plans. Then, I watched The Graham Norton Show where Miriam was promoting her book. The hardcover isn‘t available in the US until next May, but we all know I prefer memoirs on audio anyway. So, plans be damned, Miriam‘s memoir is my next listen. 🤩

julesG This is going to be fun. I'm sure of it. 2y

zezeki I first took notice of her when watching Graham Norton, she is always funny, love her sense of humour and no filter storytelling, yet she does it so elegantly! 2y

I‘ve been a fan for a very long time so this book was a delight to read. If there is an audio book I shall get it. To hear this in her voice would be wonderful. I did have that voice in my head as I read . I think I have to agree with Stephen Fry. ☝️
