Light pick. I wasn‘t expecting much from this one, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it. The background explanation of the villain didn‘t really make a lot of sense, but overall this book offered some great dark gothic vibes and a good yearning romance. A bit more gory/gruesome than I was expecting, but that didn‘t bother me given I read it during spooky season. 3.5 stars from me.

Sorry #LMPBC there is no way I can read 370 pages of this book, in this world. I only read 40 and I‘m already skimming. It‘s so overly dramatic and I just know I‘m not going to enjoy it.

I skipped to the back and see that no one else really enjoyed it, so I don‘t feel bad.

Chrissyreadit I‘m bummed it was so bad- and felt like a rip off of so many better written books. 14mo
jen_the_scribe Yeah I can definitely understand that. It wasn‘t the best and I found the MC annoying. I wanted to bail a few times but was able to finish it somehow. 14mo

Not my cup of tea. But it‘s another book off my shelf. And I will read book 2 mostly because I already have it and I am oddly curious to see if the author improved any.

This was my January #LMPBC book & so I won‘t go into detail about my thoughts. But I‘ve left a review on SG if you want to know.

Book 3 for #joyousjanuary
#roll100 roll 3 book
Book 5 for #readoffmyshelf2023

PuddleJumper That's great! 1y

Lakesedge is an amazing YA fantasy that I can see becoming the next A Court of Thorns and Roses. I thought that this book was a standalone, but when I got to the cliffhanger at the end, I realized that there has to be a sequel. I am totally adding the sequel to my TBR list, and I will read it as soon as it comes out! I need to know what happens next!

⭐️⭐️/5. I have mixed feelings about this book. I had really hoped to like it more considering the blurb sounded so interesting. I loved the strong, resilient and clever main character. The world building was just okay, and most of the characters felt one-sided or flat. The writing was mediocre, and the core premise of the story has been used many times. Cont...

IheartYA There could have been many more twists and turns, and action. My biggest gripe was the pacing; there were many chunks of time where it felt like nothing was happening or time was too slow and this very much affected the progression of the plot. The romance was shallow and lusty, and I had a hard time sensing the emotion of the story but it had a lot of potential. The conclusion felt incomplete, the why or how wasn't answered. . 2y
IheartYA The cover is magnificent, however. Unfortunately, I don't think this is a book I will remember. This writer has talent though, and room and time to grow. Thank you to Bookish First for offering this book in their catalogue. The opinions stated here are 100% my own. 2y
KristiAhlers I have picked this one up and put it down countless times. I haven‘t yet committed to buying it yet. 2y

For the first half of this book I was totally enchanted. I loved Leta who takes self-sacrifice a little too seriously in her quest to keep her brother safe. I was enthralled with the creepy setting and the dark mystery at its center. Then things just stalled and got increasingly repetitive. I grew bored quickly. Doubt I will pick up the sequel.

vonnie862 That's too bad. It has a great cover. 2y
Jas16 @vonnie862 it does. It has also received a lot of love so it could just be me. 2y

I really enjoyed this book. And I finished it on the same day as I preordered the second book, same style copy! 😁

TEArificbooks The Dusty Bookshelf is my favorite bookstore! I haven‘t seen that bookmark for years 2y
Literary_Siren @mdm139 I liked it a lot more before the fire. They fixed it up really nice but I don‘t like that they put a coffee bar right in the middle of the store, or that there are more new books than used books. 2y
TEArificbooks @Literary_Siren I didn‘t know you lived there. That is my hometown I moved away almost 20 years ago though. Haven‘t been since the fire. Meant to go back for reunion but covid. I want Vista too. 2y

Totally screenshot @RavenclawPrincess913 post- and started looking at reviews for this book- so I completely stacked #blameitonlitsy after reading @LibrarianRyan ‘s review, but then saw @Avanders review. Aletheia I‘m totally curious about your review. #tosaveornottosave

Chrissyreadit Also @RavenclawPrincess913 your posts are very eye catching! They totally sucked me in. 2y
Avanders Lol idk you can blame it on grouchiness 😂 lots of people do seem to like this… I think I just felt it was so contrived and obvious. But… like I said, I was pretty grouchy while reading it and maybe, in a different mood, I would have felt very differently 😁 I‘ll be very curious to hear your thoughts if you read it!!! (edited) 2y

LibrarianRyan I had to go back and reread my review. I did like it. But I also really love dark and atmospheric readers. I think if I was in a different mood, maybe not. So I can totally see what @Avanders is saying. Do I think this book and series will still be read 20-30 years from now, probably not, but I did enjoy it. 2y
Avanders @LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit I do too… dark & atmosphere are my bread & butter 😜 But apparently…. Not always? 🤷🏽‍♀️😅 2y

It‘s been almost 1.5 years since my last post on here. I pop in every now and then and see what everyone‘s been reading. monster in the woods.

Quote: "Tendrils of darkness unfold from the ground and snare the wolf, wrapping it's legs like vines." Very descriptive and scared me to be completely honest.

Quote: "This monster, who claims there's darkness in my brother who wanted to take Arien away and leave me behind, he came back for me." Does the monster have a little crush on Violeta?

This book was very interesting and loved it. The plot was so amazing.

RavenclawPrincess913 Love the relationship between Rowan and Violetta. I also love how she sacrificed everything. I would definitely reccomend reading this just be warned it's a very emotional story. 2y

4 ⭐ There is some debate if this is “gothic”. To me, yes. I find it very reminiscent of the look and feel of Guillermo Del Toro‘s Crimson Peak. Lakesedge is a “poisoned” estate. The lake is black and dangerous and has caused the death of many people. And the rumor is that Rowan, the current lord of the land, used the lake to kill his family. All most anyone really knows is that he is dark, mysterious, and moody.

LibrarianRyan Violeta is just a young woman trying to protect her brother from a world that does not know or understand him. Leta doesn‘t really know him either. She just knows he has nightmares. But these are more than nightmares. It is his dark alchemist powers that are growing everyday, and Rowan needs his help to drive bac the poison at Lakesedge. But this story is so much more than that. Leta herself is very special as well, she can call to the Lord 2y
LibrarianRyan Under. He saved her years ago when she was driven from her home with her young brother. And now he is back, and will complicate things at Lakes Edge.

I really enjoyed this book. It was haunting and dark, and as mentioned before it feels like Crimson Peak, crossed between A Court of Mist and Fury. Huh? That‘s right. Rowan and Lord Under remind me a bit of Tamlin and Rhys. (Please be aware I have only read the first book of that series).
2y
LibrarianRyan One thinks the other is evil, but still needs their help to keep a kingdom peaceful or at least under control.

The sequel to this is out soon, and based on blurb alone, I feel it may go the way of ACTAR, but I sure hope not. I loved the quite story between Leta and Rowan. It has its dark parts, and two people finding light in each other. The side characters are just as compelling. We shall see where the story goes, because unfortunately,
2y
LibrarianRyan this one ends on a cliffhanger. 2y

I bet at least a couple of these will be #unpopularopinion, but these were my #worstof21 — with Lakesedge coming in at the absolute top of that list. I‘ll say re The End of October that it would have made for great NF, but I felt the author failed in the “story telling” aspect of writing a novel.

Thanks for the tag @MaleficentBookDragon ! 😁😘

RamsFan1963 I don't know if I'd say worst, but Ready Play Two was very disappointing. 2y
Reggie The End of October?!!!!! 😲you‘re dead to me. Lol jk. I loved that book. But I know not every book is for everyone. 😁 2y
Avanders @RamsFan1963 right — it wasn‘t a 1 star for me… (it was 2 😜), and it wasn‘t nearly as bad as Lakesedge… but even going into it prepared that it was going to be disappointing… it was still disappointing! ☹️ 2y
Avanders @Reggie I knowwwww! Lol that was probably the biggest unpopular opinion… I think it was because I just wanted to like it so much, so the disappointment was too sharp 😕 Also, it wasn‘t a 1-star either 😁 it was 2… 2y

This was such a long eerie gothic romance with lush descriptions and elements of the paranormal, with the main setting being a dark manor near a corrupted black lake. The MC Leta is determined to save the world, and is so brave and sassy. I loved the relationship she has with her brother Arien. The romance was a perfect enemies to lovers with a brooding love interst being the mysterious Lord Rowan. The plot was enjoyable and left on a cliffhanger

I enjoyed how atmospheric this book was, the slow burning romance between Leta and Rowen, and the mythology/religion of the Lady and Lord Under. I thought the story wrapped up quite well, so I‘m not sure since it says #1 what book two will bring or how many there will be in total. Could be read as a stand-alone.

It was pretty terrible—super weirdly repetitive & clichéd & oh-so-tropey. It‘s *not* gothic or modern gothic… though certain obvious elements have been shoved into the story to make it appear so. But it got the extra star for being such a quick and easy read. Deserved? Idk, maybe not…. ;p I really start to wonder if I‘m too old for YA… but when I think about Six of Crows & other well-written YAs, I think, “no, this just isn‘t good.” ??‍♀️
⭐️⭐️

Avanders Or this trilogy that I loved: 2y
kellyann28 Oh that's a bummer! I have this on my TBR 🥴 2y
Avanders @kellyann28 Well — if you can tear through it… maybe it‘s still worth starting and seeing how you like it? Some people have really loved it… 🤷🏽‍♀️😁 2y
BethM The cover is pretty? Lol. I have the same feelings about YA, but then I think of ACoTaR and others. My theory is that “good” YA was when I was a YA reader before we knew what to call it. For the most part then and now “good” was also always sff based. Now some YA has devolved into angsty teen garbage which is not what made us love the genre. 2y
Avanders @BethM lol! The book is beautiful — this copy also has pretty end pages and was signed… I wanted to love it. I totally agree — sooooo much angsty garbage! 😂😂 (edited) 2y
