Game On
Game On: Tempting Twenty-Eight | Janet Evanovich
33 posts | 34 read | 1 to read
Stephanie Plum returns to hunt down a new kind of criminal operating out of Trenton in the 28th book in the wildly popular series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Janet Evanovich. When Stephanie Plum is woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of footsteps in her apartment, she wishes she didnt keep her gun in the cookie jar in her kitchen. And when she finds out the intruder is fellow apprehension agent Diesel, six feet of hard muscle and bad attitude who she hasnt seen in more than two years, she still thinks the gun might come in handy. Turns out Diesel and Stephanie are on the trail of the same fugitive: Oswald Wednesday, an international computer hacker as brilliant as he is ruthless. Stephanie may not be the most technologically savvy sleuth, but she more than makes up for that with her dogged determination, her understanding of human nature, and her willingness to do just about anything to bring a fugitive to justice. Unsure if Diesel is her partner or her competition in this case, shell need to watch her back every step of the way as she sets the stage to draw Wednesday out from behind his computer and into the real world.

My #Bookspin book this month is Going Rogue, no 29 in the Stephanie Plum series but I realised I hadn‘t read no 28 yet so I settled down with that instead. Stephanie gets involved in a murderous entanglement between rival computer hackers, one of whom has plans that rival the schemes of the villains in superhero movies! It was a fun quick read, more enjoyable than many of the more recent books in the series.

Somehow this was my first book of 2023. 🤷 Maybe that's a clue that this will be a fun year. Rolling with it.

Stephanie Plum did not disappoint with this one. I enjoy her antics and the colorful cast of characters in her life.

It was a typical Stephanie Plum book, so of course I loved it. Not enough Morelli and Ranger tho. Or Grandma Mazur. But still good.

It has been a really rough couple of weeks. I decided a rest day from the gym and an evening of reading was in order. Starting a book I‘ve been waiting to read…my brain candy.

I really like this series so was excited for a new book. This one was good, but not the best. I didn‘t have any laugh out loud moments like I usually do. And what‘s with “pleasure facilitator”? When did Lula stop saying she used to be a “ho”? Still some fun moments and I do like Diesel. Although I don‘t know why Wulf was even in this one.

tokorowilliamwallace I love seeing quirky uses of language and self-appellations in books; it adds the experience, perspective, context, characterization, and uniqueness of the situation and story since people have their own individual manners of speaking and referring to things. 3y
BethM I‘m betting “ho” was no longer acceptable verbiage. 2y

Stephanie Plum is back trying to catch a computer hacker who has gone off the rails. Diesel is looking for the same guy, so they team up to try to capture him. Lula had lost her mojo, and Grandma is taking up computer hacking. I laughed out loud a couple of times, and the story was fast and entertaining. This is a must read series for me, and I enjoyed this latest book. But I can admit that the books aren‘t what they used to be. Still ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Received this for Christmas from my hubby. This series is a must read for me. The quality of the stories has diminished a bit, but after 28+ books (including the “between the numbers novellas) over nearly as many years, I have to see it through. I love Stephanie Plum and her silly gang of cohorts. ❤️📚

wanderinglynn I love Grandma Mazur! ❤️ 3y
Elizabeth2 @wanderinglynn she‘s my favorite, too! With Lula a very close second. 😆 3y

As usual, scenes with Lula and Grandma Mazur are the high points. Not the best of the series, but still a fast and fun read.

I made it to the end. It wasn‘t terrible but also it kind of was? Not a fan of Diesel or his cousin, Wulf, who literally disappears in a cloud of green smoke not once but twice. I remember when this series wasn‘t afraid of the occasional f-bomb - but now it‘s fudge or heck…

Well-ReadNeck I‘m also feeling that the sex scenes used to be more steamy. In 27, it was only allusions. 🥱 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Well-ReadNeck, yeah there has been a bit of a judgemental vibe in the last handful of books (I kind of wonder if Janet still writes them tbh or if she‘s just getting more conservative with age) (edited) 3y

I back the Buick out of the garage and Diesel hopped in. “I feel like I‘m in a Travolta movie,” he said. “We could make babies on this front seat.”
“You know nothing,” I said. “The backseat is the baby maker.”

CarolynM 🤣 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, they‘re not even a couple 😩 he‘s just a character that reoccurs randomly and has his own series 3y

Diesel watched me struggle to get the needle into the loop. “My standards aren‘t always that high for romantic partners, but you‘re on the borderline for not making the grade,” he said.

“You don‘t understand the nuances of knitting. It can be a reflection of life.”

Diesel was slouched back in his chair, grinning. “I take it all back. You‘re incredibly loveable when you‘re earnest. What are you knitting?”

126 pages in before Ranger makes an appearance…

Screaming and crying because it was only a phone call and I‘m not convinced that it counts.

slategreyskies I love Ranger! 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @slategreyskies, we are up to two phone calls and stashing some people at Rangeman for safe keeping… not enough Ranger 3y
Bookzombie I gave up several books back because I don‘t care for Diesel and I always want more Ranger, lol. 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Bookzombie, it‘s interesting that he keeps appearing when the his own series stalled after 3 books. Janet‘s got a new series coming out - and the new main character popped up in the last Stephanie Plum book - the other books just must not sell as well… good call stopping really - the books are not what they were. 3y

Why is Diesel in this??? Can we not have nice things?

mcipher Did she ever pick a man?? I was rooting for Ranger…. 😍 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @mcipher, not really. She‘s been more with Morelli in recent books but its on again off again so there is still quite a bit of flirting with Ranger. 3y

This one is the latest in the Stephanie Plum series, now veering away from using the number titles. (Exciting development!) Diesel returns in this one and Lula has some great lines, as usual. It‘s typical for the series, so fun but a bit repetitive.

Diesel returns so there is less Morelli & Ranger page time. I‘d read a reverse harem fanfic version of Stephanie Plum. It was the usual fluff and shenanigans but an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. It‘s probably only 🔫🔫🔫 but an extra 🔫 for Grandma and because it‘s consistently fun.

jewright I love these books. They are so ridiculous but funny! 3y

I haven't read one of the books in this series since the 18th, but when I was offered an advance copy I decided to dive back in. I would classify the book as a comedic thriller. It was a light, fun read and the equivalent of chick lit for mystery or thriller fans. I gave it 3.5/5 stars...like cotton candy...not much there but still tasty!
