This was slow, and gave me slight Grapes of Wrath vibes. It felt like a modern classic with some archetypal soul-searching, and ending irony. I would recommend it for someone who likes classic novels like Steinbeck or Dickens.

My bedroom book was left at my parents' house and now my car book (AKA lunch break book) is in my bedroom and my whole life is out of whack.

I liked this, but it was a depressing story. But as with all of Chevalier‘s novels, it was well-written and good historical fiction.

I loved this book so much I had to buy myself a copy! Such a deep story with more then one story line, there are some major ups and downs in the characters lives, joy and grief. This book is a hidden gem!

Our library is open selected hours so I managed to pop in and chose this one.
I've read Remarkable Creatures and was fascinated.

My first read of 2020 is a reread of one of my favorites!! I love that this book is indirectly about trees 🌳🍎 but also that it is the gritty and pitiful story of the Goodenough family. What a hard life they had! I love these characters. James just wants his orchard to be a success. His wife, Sadie, wants it to fail. She is so vindictive! Amazing audio with Mark Bramhall, Hillary Huber, Kirby Heyborne, and Cassandra Morris narrating.

I am always amazed by Tracy Chevalier‘s ability to bring a certain historical time and place to such vivid life. This #audiobook is very well presented by the voice actors. The story of the harsh life on the American frontier for a family of apple-growers and of the son who makes his way to California—first for gold and then to harvest seeds and saplings of redwood and sequoia trees for the European market—is rich in history & emotionally moving.

This book is historical fiction featuring the real Johnny Appleseed. I don‘t remember a lot of details but I remember thinking I couldn‘t believe I was reading something interesting involving planting #apple trees. #FallisBooked

Set in #Ohio, I enjoyed this one a few years back.

Chevalier writes captivating historical novels. I‘ve yet to read this one, but she uses research to tell the story of Johnny Appleseed, a folk hero in the United States (yes, he was a real guy). #Harvest #FallIsBooked

This book makes you eat a lot of apples. Also, it's a wonderful story about family, oneself and where we go. Apples and trees are not only important parts of this story but also very strong symbols of life that always finds its way.

What made me think this was an historical novel about Adam and Eve????

I finished listening to this today and really liked it. The narrators did a great job bringing the characters to life. I didn‘t like the parents very much but you need to know their story to better understand Robert and Martha. Loved the ending.

Thanks so much for sending me this book @kathedron ! I have to admit I wasn‘t sure at first - a book about apple trees?! I started it yesterday morning on the train to work and just finished it now on the train home - that means I devoured it in less than 2 hours - I loved it!

I liked this story. The characters weren‘t traditionally likable, but I was rooting for them by the end. The audiobook narrators added a lot to the story.

I Iove how Chevalier alternates the first person perspectives between James and Sadie Goodenough to build their characters. Sadie is so easy to hate until we hear from her! So much of her perceived meanness is due to guilt, tired frustration, and her own self created isolation from her family. I keep wanting to see things work out in Black Swamp, but the Goodenough heads seem like such a completely tragic couple.

I haven‘t read this book, I don‘t even know what it‘s about but it‘s v pretty. This is the inside of the cover.

A good read. I completely disliked the parents, James and Sadie Goodenough. What a miserable, mean, dysfunctional couple! They made me want to abandon the book despite my love of all things apple orchard🍎But, I kept on and enjoyed the second story line of the book that followed their son Robert on his work and travels amongst the redwoods and sequoias in early 1850s California.

Really enjoyed this. Chevalier painted a vivid picture of an emerging landscape and created a series of wonderfully different characters. And yes that is Little House on the Prairie in the background #childhoodmemories

I like the idea of horses having a sense of humour 🐴

Do like a lazy morning in bed. I'm enjoying this book, it's shifted from a 2 person perspective to a series of letters from one of the children.

I'm so indecisive!! This arrived in the post today and it looks too good not to read straight away. My other book will just have to wait 📚

I just finished this book and it was good, not great. I really enjoyed Girl with a Pearl Earring, so may have had too high of expectations for this book. I also started reading The Muse by Jessie Burton and can't help, but think that somehow the authors switched identities on these 2 books. 😜😂🍎🎨

🍎My first Chevalier!

Loved this. Probably not what you need if you want a super uplifting read. The Goodenough family is completely dysfunctional, but MAN they make a great story.

The alternating-time story structure was a slight annoyance but I was so into the frontier life presented here. Physically and emotionally tough. The nature details were fascinating but I can see how some may be bored with these things.

I've made myself read + listen to books this past week when I have felt overwhelmed with the news and action here in the US. Regular short breaks have been essential for me to keep going and stay focused.

This is my #currentlyreading audiobook: it's so good! The narrators are AMAZING. The story starts slowly and builds. I'm still early but I've heard great things! Plus I'm so in love with this cover 🍎🍏🍎
