This Spells Love
This Spells Love: A Novel | Kate Robb
21 posts | 13 read | 13 to read
What if one little wish changed everything? A young woman tries to heal her heartbreak by casting a spell to erase her ex from her pastbut she wakes up in an alternate reality where shes lost more than she wished forin this witty, whimsical friends-to-lovers debut When Gemma Wilde gets dumped by her long-term boyfriend, she reacts the way any reasonable twenty-eight-year-old would: by getting drunk with her sister, kooky aunt, and best friend, Dax. After drinking one too many margaritas, they decide to perform a love cleansing spell, which promises to erase Gemmas ex from her memory. They follow all the instructions, including a platonic kiss from Dax to seal the deal. When Gemma wakes up, she realizes that this silly spell has worked. Not only does it seem that she never dated her ex, but the rest of her life is completely unrecognizable. The worst part: Dax has no idea who she is. To reverse the spell and get back to her old life, Gemma must convince her once-best-friend-now-near-stranger to kiss her. But as she carries out her plans, she finds herself falling for him--hard. Soon, Gemma begins to wonder whether she even wants to go back to the way things once were. What if Dax was The One all along?

Ugh. I could not stand the main MC in this book and unfortunately it‘s all told from her point of view. I did like Dax a bit but Gemma was so selfish and frustrating. It‘s too bad because I really love magical realism and love stories.

wanderinglynn I totally agree with you! Gemma was obnoxiously self-centered and oblivious. But I loved Dax, although I couldn‘t understand his motivation for standing by & watching her with Stewart. 1w
Laughterhp @wanderinglynn Agreed! He also would do a bunch of stuff he didn‘t enjoy, like drink a pitcher of a specific beer every week. Like why?! 1w

Like I've noted, love stories are not my kind of reads...unless there is something I particularly like about the storyline.

If this hadn't been a time-slip, I would't have read it & that would've been a shame because these characters were wonderful.

This one was simply a cute and whimsical romance what was infused with the interesting message about “living“ your dreams.

Would make a great series with wacky Aunt Livi as the magical matchmaker!

Thank you for tagging me @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks & @dabbe.

Any time-slip love story.

I Knew I Loved You, by Savage Garden (Love their music).

While not a perfect match, I don't know why nearly every time I encounter a time-slip love story, this song automatically plays once. As if like magic. Turn on the radio, there are those lyrics. Walk into a grocery store, this song greets me, etc.

I've come to link the song with time-slip love stories.

AnnCrystal Coincidence, I know, yet I prefer a magical explanation 😂😉☺️🎶💝. (edited) 1mo

Don't have many romance books. Not that I don't like a good love story, I just prefer the romantic to come secondary to the fantasy or paranormal.

Interesting title, intriguing coverart, inviting setting, or having something I like mixed into the story usually gets me to buy into these.

That's how this one came to live on my bookshelf...magic.

Love time-loop stories!

Just read through Chap.7 last night and I found myself holding my breath!

So I read time-loop HEAs often especially this time of year. They are easy fun stories. First thing I read for: Does the MC experience this time-wrap on their own or do they get to confide with someone about their experience? And if they confide, how quickly did supporting character(s) find the MC credible? This time the MC had 2 supporting characters in her corner, and it was adorable.

Normally I love a good magical realism romance & there were things I did love about this story, but the MC Gemma was not one of them. This is clearly it‘s me not you. I think I‘ m too middle-aged to sympathize with 20-something Gemma. It didn't help that I wasn't crazy about the narrator. She had a weird cadence and pacing.

Great characters, delightful premise.A bit reminiscent of In Five Years by Rebecca Serle. Nothing is certain when you are ‘love-spelled‘- it could go favorably, or poorly. Fun read

Loved this time-slip, sliding doors debut romance. Clever and deliberate, the prose is comforting and the pace feels perfect. The characters were charming yet authentic and really added to the story. I look forward to more from Robb! #BookspinBingo #arc #netgalleygroup @TheAromaofBooks

I choose two books this month from #BOTM
They both looked really good. I am excited to get my box. Hope it comes quickly! ❤️📚📭

What did you guys choose?

I hadn‘t heard of this book prior to #botm choosing it this month, but it looks fun! I was really close to choosing Again and Again, but it‘s been a stressful month and I‘m much more in the mood for a sweet romance than a deep emotional journey, so I went with my gut. This was my 12th BOTM box which means I‘m a “BFF” now. 😋 I get a tote!

This is a charming and endearing novel about Gemma, whose breakup with Stuart leaves her devastated with a void she fills with doughnuts and alcohol. But after her aunt works a “charm,” she awakens to a new reality. So sweet (but lots of sex so beware) and funny!
