Listen for the Lie
Listen for the Lie: A Novel | Amy Tintera
"A world-class whodunit." Stephen King An extremely successful high-wire act, balancing between dark comedy and darker thrills. Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times bestselling author Laugh-out-loud funny, thrilling and twisty... Liane Moriarty, #1 New York Times bestselling author What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter? After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvys blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. Its been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy cant remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life. But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie," and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvys murder for the shows second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friends murder, even if she is the one that did it. The truth is out there, if we just listen.

The back and forth between the main character and the podcast works really well as an audiobook. Kept me guessing until (almost) the end!

Not a single likeable character. Everyone is 🛌 with everyone else and seemingly the whole town knows, but no one spotted the physical abuse?

Maybe Tintera should stick to YA novels.

The #audiobook was done well though, I liked the podcast sound effects.

6th book finished for #Read2025 and #JumpStart2025 @DieAReader @LizPixie

This was a very good read, and a good suspense book, and good use of Podcasts throughout. This meant it leant itself very well to the audiobook format, which was narrated well. Tension kept up to the end, and some good twists as the story progressed. Definitely strongly recommended.

Just started the first of the many books Littens nominated during #12Booksof2024.

Thanks to @BarkingMadRead & @TorieStorieS for nominating this.

Each month I am aiming to read 3 or 4 of the books that were nominated, and this is the first. Altogether I added 50 books to my TBR from #12Booksof2024 #Read12Booksof2024

I am reading this via audiobook, & looks like it lends itself to this format.

Andrew65 @TorieStorieS Just thought I do these posts each year and add loads to my TBR but not proactive enough in getting to the books recommended. Showed up many of the books recommended last year I added but hadn‘t got to. Ideally will aim to get to one a week. I want to read more standalones as well this year. 2w

For Day 2 of the #12BooksOf2024, my February pick was harder to narrow down— but LISTEN FOR THE LIE was one of my favorite audiobooks of the whole year, though honorable mentions must go to the other 5-star reads I read that month (my monthly calendar log in the photo lists the 5 others!).

Thanks @Andrew65 for organizing this fun countdown!

Andrew65 Thanks I love a good audiobook, and will need to check this out. 4w

This is a very well executed book. Plot is strong, even the pop culture elements like the podcast don't feel like empty buzz but are an important mechanism in the story. Lucy the MC is great, very enjoyably messy character. There is a really interesting perspective on Domestic Violence which adds a bit of heft to what is otherwise a beach read type book. Nothing truly original but a very enjoyable read with broad appeal

This was great! It took a long time to get into it and I considered DNFing. I‘m so glad I didn‘t! There are a lot of twists and I didn‘t predict the end. I loved Lucy‘s grandmother so much! I‘ve never listened to a true crime podcast, so that whole angle was foreign to me. There is subtle feminism in here along with some very frustrating situations happening toward some of the female characters, but overall I think Tintera‘s points are effective.

intothehallofbooks I received a digital copy of this book via NetGalley pre-publication, but had a hard time settling into reading it multiple times. I‘m so glad I was finally able to finish it! Listening to the [excellent] audiobook helped. Many thanks to Macmillan for sending a review copy my way. Hopefully this review is better late than never! 3mo

I read this for a book club. I liked a lot of it. I didn‘t like some of it.

Personal preference: I am not about twists just to have twists. Also, I like fall out. I wanted to have more at the end showing how things landed after the reveal.

I get why it‘s popular. The book club meeting had a lot of good conversation. But for me it was mid.

A clever thriller, with a snarky as all get out MC, a twist I genuinely didn't see coming (but made total sense looking back at it), and some thoughtful social commentary on violence against women, who people are willing to believe, and societal expectations of a "good victim". It took me about 1/3 to really get into this one, but then I couldn't put it down.

Fast paced thrilller with some sharp dialogue along the way. Points for an original take and I didn‘t hate the main protagonist. However it got very messy about half way through and confusing as to who was sleeping with who and whose ex was whose and by that point I didn‘t care enough to keep track. I did love Savvy though and that was a very interesting take. Not as many twists as expected from the hype and I guessed it almost from the start. Ok

Finished this for book club! This is an interesting variety on the true crime podcast storyline seen in mysteries/thrillers! It was interesting to learn things as Lucy was trying to remember them herself. There were some interesting twists. I‘ll be eager to discuss the ending at book club & I did some reading about it online. I‘d love to hear what others thought of the ending. You can post in the comments with the spoiler warning.

You‘ve heard of CSI:Miami. You‘ve heard of NCIS:New Orleans. This book is OMITB:Austin

Seriously, it would make a great show. There are some absolutely laugh-out-loud scenes - Tintera has a great sense of comic timing. The writing overall was a bit pedestrian, but the suspense was well-crafted. The book lurched this way and that as various characters fell under suspicion, and it seemed like the twist might be something truly original, but…

CSeydel … ultimately the ending veered back into safe, predictable chick lit territory, where all men are dangerous, one way or another, and if a woman does something bad it‘s always because a man drove her to it. 6mo

Final review of the day (it‘s been like a marathon today 😆)! This was a fun whodunit with the added element of a podcast to really twist up your brain and make you doubt what you think happened. I actually loved the main character Lucy and couldn‘t help but hope she wasn‘t the murderer everyone seemed to think she was. The dialogue was great and the story really flowed well, especially given the short chapters. Definitely recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I really enjoyed this crime novel about a woman searching for answers after she is suspected of killing her friend. The set-up is that Ben is doing a podcast about her case, and I loved how the author created an odd couple vibe. Lucy is a sarcastic, witty but ultimately sympathetic character & her family wonderfully dysfunctional. I half guessed it but there were plenty of twists & turns making for a satisfying read.

This was my April 2024 BOTM pick. I enjoyed this thriller/ mystery about the unsolved murder of Savvy, a young woman who was discovered bludgeoned to death. Everyone suspected her best friend, Lucy, of killing her but there wasn‘t enough proof. Now, years later a true crime podcaster is reopening the case. I liked the podcast form which made for short fast chapters. I gave it 4 stars. #BOTM. #CurrentlyReading. #ListenForTheLie.

Lucy is suspected of viciously killing her best friend Savvy. Due to amnesia and lack of evidence she is not charged with the crime. She returns home for her grandmother's birthday and everything from the night she can't remember begins to resurface as her case is dissected by a well known crime podcast. This book was fantastic with a mix of humor, mystery, romance, paranormal and a great plot twist!

I guess I just don't get it. Honestly, I thought Lucy was a brat and Podcaster Ben was a tool. Whilst I like reading the podcast portions the rest of the book just didn't work for me. I'm a character driven reader meaning its all about the charactersfor me. And these characters were meh and almost unlikable. I really don't get the hype...but hey that's just my opinion. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks
