Anatomical Shape of a Heart
Anatomical Shape of a Heart | Jenn Bennett
Artist Beatrix Adams knows exactly how she's spending the summer before her senior year. Determined to follow in Da Vinci's footsteps, she's ready to tackle the one thing that will give her an advantage in a museum-sponsored scholarship contest: drawing actual cadavers. But when she tries to sneak her way into the hospital's Willed Body program and misses the last metro train home, she meets a boy who turns her summer plans upside down. Jack is charming, wildly attractive . . . and possibly one of San Francisco's most notorious graffiti artists. On midnight buses and city rooftops, Beatrix begins to see who Jack really is-and tries to uncover what he's hiding that leaves him so wounded. But will these secrets come back to haunt him? Or will the skeletons in Beatrix's own family's closet tear them apart?

This was such a cute, fluffy, romantic contemporary. The locations of San Francisco were written perfectly and the writing blended together well with a fast pace. The MC Bex was quirky, odd and honest who loves drawing anatomical pictures, the hawt love interst is Jack, a night time graffiti artist. The romance developed fast but was cute, and a little spicy. It had such a good take on mental health and also had a sweet HEA ending!

Hi bookworms!! What have you been reading lately?!
Sorry about my absence, I have been in a reading slump lately - but this book really helped me get rid of my slump! It‘s a cute insta-love sort of contemporary novel that‘s just really fun to read. Insta-love is my least favorite thing lol, but this one has a couple of things that I really appreciated- I won‘t spoil for you. I would recommend to anyone who is in a slump or needs a feel good story.

Do you have a set bed time or do you read until you fall asleep? I am trying to enforce a Midnight bed time and sleep more this year! (Patch by AJ Bronznya)

Moray_Reads I often have trouble sleeping so I have to have a very strict routine. No late night reading for me 🙁 8y
mtinnick Me every night 😁😁 8y
Amandajoy Both. I usually go to bed around 9 (exciting, I know 🤓) & read until my eyes start slamming shut, which is usually between 9:30 & 10:30. I rarely stay up too late reading, mostly because I'm not a nice person with lack of sleep (& I wake up between 4:30 & 5). 8y
See All 7 Comments
Soubhiville I go to bed between 9:30 and 10, and usually read for 20-30 minutes before I start falling asleep. I also get up between 4:30 and 5 am @Amandajoy 😊 8y
OneCent76 12:30 am is the latest I will stay up during the week. I don't need to wake up til 7:30-8:00 tho. 8y
Joshilyn I don't to read at night. I will never go to sleep if I am reading. At a certain point, usually before 10, I set my book down and turn on the television. I'm usually asleep in under 20 minutes. Then I get up in the morning at 5 o'clock to write 8y
Gissy I go to bed between 10 to midnight since I wake up at 4:45 am so I can't read much. but during the weekends, Saturday and Sundays when I'm not on call, I could read all night! It's like having a party with my book! 8y

Last question for December's book! (We hope you had a happy holiday!)

In your opinion, do Bex and Jack get the happily-ever-after?

#decfyabc #fyabookclub

Time for another discussion question!

Bex and Jack have an immediate attraction to each other, both physically and emotionally. Did Bennett make their immediate attraction believable, or did it feel like instalove?

#decfyabc #fyabookclub

BookNerdBritt I'm not much of a romance reader, so the meet-cute made me roll my eyes a little bit, but as long as the characters are developed beyond just making 😍 at each other, it's all good. (edited) 8y
ForeverYoungAdult @BookNerdBritt I liked the whole "infatuation" at first sight thing, because I think we've all experienced purely physical attraction and/or intrigue with a stranger. – mc (edited) 8y
BrandiNB Certainly the immediate physical attraction and chemical reaction is believable; their relationship and feelings for each other deepened rather quickly, but it didn't seem like totally out of the blue "instalove." 8y

Time for a discussion question!

How do you feel about street art and graffiti, and the way Jack created his? Is it unethical because someone is using another person's property as a canvas, is it okay because art should push boundaries, both, or something else entirely?

#decfyabc #fyabookclub

[DELETED] 206653737 I think ultimately graffiti is destruction of property, but that being said I've seen some graffiti that's absolutely beautiful. 8y
Jas16 I love all of the colorful murals and art in the walls in San Francisco. I do get really cranky about tagging especially when we get fined by the city to clean up our building walls at work over and over. 8y
ForeverYoungAdult Therein lies the catch-22, @bookish22, at least for me. I love looking at the art, but realize that it's wrong to do it ... I also think there's a line between graffiti art and tagging for tagging's sake. – mc (edited) 8y
See All 6 Comments
[DELETED] 206653737 @Jas16 defiantly see that side of things, especially if your footing the bill to get it cleaned up. And yes @ForeverYoungAdult it is a catch-22 and agree on the tagging thing. 8y
skullsinthesea Same, @jas16! The murals are gorgeous, the tagging is not. 8y
BrandiNB I don't have strong opinions on the topic either way, but generally I agree that murals are more acceptable than tagging. My boyfriend is an artist and he is obsessed with graffiti so I'm paying more attention to it than I have previously. Haven't seen anything particularly beautiful so far. :( 8y

Let's ease into this month's questions with an icebreaker! (No book spoilers on this post, please.)

Has a piece of art or an artist ever made a big impact on you? Tell us about it!

#decfyabc

mandyannecurtis I'll start! I'm Mandy C. From FYA. Growing up, my aunt instilled in me a love of the Impressionists, particularly Monet. The way their paintings look a mess from up close, but so stunning from afar never ceases to amaze me. 8y
BookNerdBritt I love photography, and Diane Arbus's work has a special place in my heart. 8y
skullsinthesea @BookNerdBritt I am also a huge fan of Diane Arbus! 8y
skullsinthesea I am a big art fan, especially late medieval and Renaissance works, but there's usually something for me in every movement. I share a birthday with Rene Magritte, and I cried when I saw Starry Night and The Persistence of Memory at the NYC MOMA. Dave McKean (Sandman) is my favorite contemporary artist--so eerie and twisted. 8y

This was just the kind of light, fluffy novel I was craving. I loved the details about SF and the discussion of art. My favorite part was the humane and realistic depiction of serious mental illness, even though it wasn't the focus of the story.

This adorable YA love story seems eye-rollingly typical at first (Meet-cute! Swoonworthy bad boy with a mysterious secret!) but there are just enough unique touches to keep it interesting. For example, the MC's greatest aspiration in life is to be an artist... who draws cadavers. While the book also touches on mental illness and being caught in the middle of parents' divorce, it still managed to be the quick, lighthearted read I needed this week.
