Contemporary's not my go-to, and I probably wouldn't have even looked twice at this book had it not been a @ForeverYoungAdult book club pick. An ambitious high schooler with big plans for her future finds out she has a rare disease that will eventually cause her to lose her memory, so she writes about her life for her future self to read. It's a bit predictable and tropey, but the main character's voice is so refreshing that I didn't mind.

I started off 2017 excited about all the books & reading challenges & being active on Litsy, & then life happened. I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, my grandmother died, I am no longer speaking to my dad after discovering he has a son that he's never met or supported in any way & was never planning to tell me about, & this school year has nearly caused me to throw the 8 years I've been on this teaching career path out the window.

britt_brooke 💔 hugs! 7y
BookNerdBritt I retreated from friends, family, social media and stopped caring about much of anything, but I knew it was bad when even reading no longer brought me enjoyment. So I'm hoping to spend this summer healing and emerging from my hole a tiny bit at a time. 7y

mjdowens My daughter has generalized anxiety disorder also. She calls and I let her just get it all out without saying anything. Then I tell her to list everything on her mind and then mark only the ones that she can actually do something about right now. Don't let too many thing overwhelm you at once. Work on the things that you can control right now. 7y
TrishB I hope you manage to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Sending hugs ❤ 7y

teebe Reading and managing anxiety at the same time sucks. There's some months I can manage 10+ books and some months where I don't read at all. My advice-- trying switching to shorter books (poetry, graphic novels). It takes less commitment. Or start many novels but drop them (temporarily) if you're not enjoying them. Sometimes I have to force myself to read at least 2 chapters of dozens of books until I find one that's intriguing enough for me. 7y

THIS BOOK 😍. Garber has created a lush, magical, dangerously seductive world packed with twists & turns & full of dark, mysterious characters. 📚 > 🎥, but I can already imagine how visually stunning this will be on screen. I love an unreliable narrator, & in this case the setting itself fulfilled that role. At Caraval, secrets are currency, time doesn't play by the rules, & lines—between illusion & reality, trust & deceit—are constantly blurred.

Clay gets a mysterious package: cassettes recorded by his crush Hannah, who had just killed herself. The tapes detail how she got to that point & are to be mailed to each person who played a role in her downward spiral. You know it ends with her suicide, yet as you're listening to the tapes you can't help desperately hoping someone sees what she's going through & pulls her back from the edge. Dual narration = excellent choice for the audiobook.

This book is a hoot & a half! I genuinely guffawed while reading, thanks to witty banter, snappy one-liners, the occasional sly pop culture reference, & some well-placed interjections from the narrators. Plus: romance, magic, & kickass women! I know zilch about the Tudors, so I don't know how history buffs will feel about the authors' liberal changes, but it's so tongue-in-cheek that I can't imagine anyone getting offended. #fyabookclub #febfyabc

Rereading these books fills my heart with so much joy (except when I nearly jumped out of my skin during the Aragog encounter, which is illustrated in TERRIFYING detail). I've read them all a million times, and this time around even caught a bit of foreshadowing for Deathly Hallows I hadn't noticed before. Now on to Prisoner of Azkaban, my absolute favorite of the series. I'm especially excited for that eventual illustrated edition! #hpchapteraday

A 21st century white girl & a freed slave from the 18th century team up to find a powerful, time-altering artifact before it falls into the wrong hands. Their search takes them through different eras & countries, and in each one she has to recognize & confront an unexplored aspect of her ignorance & privilege. This is an incredible story of the courage and sacrifice of a few that grew into a movement. I had no idea of all the role play training that went into sit-ins and other nonviolent forms of protest. Friends had to practice hurling nasty slurs at each other, harassing each other, and doing their best to provoke and tear each other down—maintaining absolute calm & composure when they were on the receiving end—in order to prepare for the real thing.

BookNerdBritt 4 stars instead of 5 because there are some background conversations where the tiny, tiny print is just legible enough to tell that they're actual words and not just scribbles, but not legible enough to read what it's actually saying! Grr!!! Graphic novel woes 😫 (edited) 7y
RealLifeReading Ugh I hate when that happens. I was just reading a comic the other day that opens with this cursive font and I stared at quite a few words trying to guess what they were and gave up. Luckily that was just the first few pages and the rest were regular lettering. 7y
BookNerdBritt @RealLifeReading Right! My eyesight is bad enough as it is haha 🤓 7y
Lindy There are 16 people ahead of me on the request list at the library (and only 4 copies). I'm going to have to buy this because it doesn't look like my hold will come in time for book club next month. Can't say I object to spending money on important books like this. 7y
moranadatter @BookNerdBritt I struggled with that too. They mostly did it for background conversations, but I wanted to know what they were saying. 7y

When I first heard about this book, I knew I wanted it in audio. I enjoy memoirs in audio format anyway—there's just something about hearing a person tell their own story in their own voice—but as an avid Night Vale fan, I already loved Mara's voice. Her stories of childhood acting, her mother's death, her mental health struggles, bombing on stage at a comedy show, & navigating friendships & relationships are honest, awkward, funny, & poignant.

BookNerdBritt P.S. In case anyone was wondering, I use the singular "their" on purpose. ?️‍? 7y

Final book of #24in48. Contemporary is not my go-to genre. Sometimes it's just too real for me, & this was one of those times. The description of Jessie's high school & everyone in it made my skin crawl, because it is exactly like mine, down to the tiniest detail. It made for an uncomfortable reading experience. Otherwise, it's a cute if not terribly original story—sort of a straight version of Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda. T for #LitsyAtoZ.

Pickpick

6th book/1st graphic novel of #24in48. Two people who can stop time with their orgasms find each other and team up to have sex and rob banks. It's as creative and outrageous as it sounds, exploring themes like loneliness, whether the end justifies the means, and (obviously) sexuality. I probably ruined my eyesight a little trying to read the tiny text of the many jokes and gems hidden in the background art, but it was worth it. One qualm: 👇🏾

BookNerdBritt I did not like that this book perpetuates the double standard that a straight girl can fool around with a girl and she's just "experimenting" but a straight guy fools around with a guy and HOLY SHIT IT'S SUCH A BIG DEAL. ? 7y

17.5 hours in to #24in48, 5th book completed! The title is pretty self-explanatory: a group of fangirls kidnap a member of the boy band they're obsessed with, and things quickly spiral out of hand while they argue over what to do with him (e.g. let him go vs. take lots of selfies vs. blackmail him for concert tickets). Equal parts ridiculous and thought provoking, this book explores fandom culture and all its implications. K for #LitsyAtoZ.

Leah starts this book by revealing that her relationship with her husband began when he was married to another woman, that her father did time for selling drugs, & that her mother was "a self-admitted slut in her younger days." Why? So the "church" of Scientology can't use it against her or her family for coming forward with this book. She's incredibly brave & adept at explaining both why Scientology appeals to so many & why it is so fucked up.

Belated day 18: #royals. I have a soft spot for evil villain backstories, and nobody does it like Marissa Meyer! This is a Queen of Hearts origin story that begins when she was just Catherine. Before she was lopping off heads, she was a girl destined to marry the king but with her own dreams of an illicit romance with the court joker and running a bakery with her best friend. Excellently crafted characters, action, humor, and heartbreak.

BookFreakOut I really enjoyed this one too! I especially appreciated how the romance had a lot of build-up with her questioning things rather than instalove. 7y

Alex, a bruja who just wants to be "normal," goes on a quest to save her family after accidentally banishing them to a strange land in an attempt to get rid of her magic. This was an interesting, Alice-in-Wonderland-esque take on witchcraft & Latin American mythology that had a fascinating world but suffered from tropes, lack of character development (beyond their diversity, which was great), & characters' making frustratingly bad decisions.

Mehso-so

In the year 2118, all of Manhattan is enclosed inside a 1000-floor tower, the floor you live on designating your wealth & social status. Interesting premise, flat execution. The way the tower was 1st described made it sound like an apartment building, & it was difficult to wrap my mind around roads, schools, parks, etc. inside. I enjoyed the PLL-style drama, but it would have been better had that same time & effort been put into world-building.

Sharanya Interesting! I also gave it a so-so, but that's because I thought the world building was 👍🏾 and the characters/plot was eh. I think I'll have to give the next one a shot to see if it's worth it. 7y
BookNerdBritt @Sharanya I had a hard time caring about the characters at first, but I like the way their lives and secrets were intertwined. I just wanted at least an explanation of why the tower exists in the first place. They can leave to go to other boroughs and cities and be outside, so it's not like air quality/global warming has forced all of humanity indoors. So why stick Manhattan in a skyscraper? I'm intrigued enough to check out the sequel, though! (edited) 7y
Sharanya @BookNerdBritt ohhhh yeah that's fair. For me it was the multiple-points-of-view thing. Few authors can do a revolving door with 5+ characters and have me care about all of them. Usually, like with this one, I had my faves (Rylin!! Leda!!), and that means I'm eagerly waiting to get back to their chapters all the time. Still, I enjoyed the whole thing quite a bit! 7y

Gissy For me it describes a decadence of human relations. It was terrible in this sense! 7y

Day 14: #fortheloveoffonts. I know everyone raves about the audiobook versions of Illuminae and Gemina, but the unique visual format contributes so much to the reading experience. @RealLifeReading #readjanuary

[DELETED] 1409720085 I love both. ♥️ It is well done all around. 7y

As a huge TGIT fan, I was really excited to read this book. I'm glad I went for the audio, because not only is she a great writer, she's also a captivating storyteller. As a huge introvert, there was so much of this book I could relate to. I couldn't help but admire her resolve to face her fears as she put herself out there again & again, & I found myself cheering her on this uplifting & inspiring journey from dark & twisty to standing in the sun.

BookishFeminist I loved this book so much!! I can't wait for HTGAWM to come back either. 👀 7y
LauraBeth Great review! 7y
christineandbooks Looking forward to reading this in 2017! Might have to try it on audio... 7y

CouronneDhiver Definitely encourage you to choose the audio over the book... it was really good! 7y
BookNerdBritt @BookishFeminist YES! Omg, that under-the-sheet reveal!!! 😭 (edited) 7y
BookNerdBritt @LauraBeth Thanks! 😃 7y
BookNerdBritt @christineandbooks @CouronneDhiver Audio is the way to go for this one! She's a great narrator and it was really cool to hear the actual clips from speeches she's given. (edited) 7y

Day 11: #DNF. I don't DNF books very often, because I hate not knowing things (even the ending to a crappy book), but I did DNF this series. I enjoyed the first one, but the second one was a struggle. I didn't want to stick around to confirm the pattern, and from what I hear, I made the right call. 🙃 @RealLifeReading #readjanuary

BookBabe Sadly, I felt that way about the trilogy of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. I did make myself finish all 3, though. 7y
Elisa I felt the same way you did about #1 and #2 so I never even got to #3 😕 7y
[DELETED] 206653737 I didn't like Scorch Trails (boring) but Death Cure was a little better, not great mind you but ok. 7y

[DELETED] 3517561138 You made the right call. These stink. I hated them. But I did finish because like you I HAVE to know what happens! Then when I finished I was so mad I'd wasted my time! 7y
BookNerdBritt @Prairiehomelibrarian I satisfied my "must know how it ends!" by looking up spoilers on Wikipedia ? 7y

Pickpick

A few months ago, I saw a Twitter thread in which Zentner & his followers (including Rainbow Rowell 💔) ridiculed a 1-star reviewer by dredging up her Amazon history. It was mean, immature, misogynistic, & would have caused me to not read the book had I not already possessed a (signed) copy. Knowing that, I'm almost mad that this book was so fucking excellent. It's harder to reconcile that he's actually talented & also an asshole on the Internet.

NovelGirl82 I must have missed that! 7y
BookNerdBritt @NovelGirl82 Yeah, it got deleted by the next day with no apology or mention of it afterward 😒 7y
Susannah What a disappointment! Thank you for posting about his behavior. It'll make me think twice about reading his books.... Did you mean that Rainbow Rowell was part of the 1-star reviewer pile-on? If so, that may be even more disappointing than Zentner's behavior. 😔 7y

teebe I have this book too and still haven't read it. Now that I know about this I feel way less inclined to read it. It always sucks to learn of a writer's shitty behaviour. Also not surprised by Rainbow Rowell's involvement, her books at problematic at their best so bad real-life behaviour doesn't surprise me as much. (edited) 7y
Notafraidofwords I was totally unaware of this. 7y
BookNerdBritt @Susannah @teebe Yeah, she started off telling him to just ignore it but ended up joining in. 7y
BookNerdBritt @Notafraidofwords I happened to see it right when it was posted, but it got deleted pretty soon afterward. 7y
BookNerdBritt @NovelGirl82 @Susannah @teebe @Notafraidofwords He started off making fun of her for having bought a cloak and given it a higher review than she had his book, and then he and his followers started piling on with Lord of the Rings jokes and memes. It's especially shitty after reading what an amazing character Travis is in this book. Then they started going through her review history and made fun of her for buying and reviewing menstrual products. 7y
Elisa 😧 that's horrible behavior! What in the world must possess someone to turn into such a bully? On the web? I haven't read his book, and I don't believe I plan on reading it now 😕 7y
BookNerdBritt @Elisa Right? How dare she not like his book but like other things! 🙄 7y
NovelGirl82 That's horrible! I was planning on reading and reviewing this book for my blog soon, but I really hate to give any sort of positive attention to someone who acts that way, and if it's a good book I'd have to be honest about that in the review. There are enough great books out there that I can skip this one. 7y
[DELETED] 1409720085 Yuck 🤢. I hate that kind of behavior. And I really didn't like his book. If I had know this before I definitely would have passed it up. 7y
mandyannecurtis Boooooo. I've never seen him be anything other than gracious. 😔 7y
BookNerdBritt @mandyannecurtis yeah, I met him in person at a book signing and he seemed super nice. 😕 7y
