Telling Tales | Ann Cleeves

Telling Tales is the second book in Ann Cleeves Vera Stanhope series which is now a major ITV detective drama starring Brenda Blethyn, VERA. Ten years after Jeanie Long was charged with the murder of fifteen-year-old Abigail Mantel, disturbing new evidence proving her innocence emerges in the East Yorkshire village of Elvet. Abigails killer is still at large. For Emma Bennett, the revelation brings back haunting memories of her vibrant best friend and of the fearful winters day when she had discovered her body lying cold in a ditch. Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope makes fresh inquiries, and the villagers are hauled back to a time they would rather forget. Tensions begin to mount, but are people afraid of the killer, or of their own guilty pasts? Also available in the Vera Stanhope series are The Crow Trap, Hidden Depths, Silent Voices and The Glass Room. Ann Cleeves Shetland series (BBC television drama SHETLAND) contains five titles, of which Dead Water is the most recent.

Rain and cats and a good book. (It‘s supposed to be summer, beaches, boats and books here though!)
I inhaled this one in 24 hours which hardly ever happens. I love how Cleeves gives you so many well developed characters each with secrets - I suspected EVERYONE. 😂😂 Loving Vera; this is the second book in the series.

CarolynM I really must try a Vera sometime. I loved the 2 Matthew Venns I read and I also love the TV version of Shetland. Hope you get some more summery weather soon. (edited) 1y
Reggie I‘m not one for mysteries but this guy in our LMPBC group sent one and I loved it. I had the ole pointing the finger at everyone moments too. Love that. 1y
Centique @Reggie ha! The finger pointing is so good. But the best thing about a series (imo) is you get to go around a story with a character you‘ve formed a friendship with. I‘m drawn back because it‘s like visiting an old friend ( plus there‘s a murder!!😂) 1y
AlaMich The kittens even complement the color scheme of the chair, which I love! 1y

After finishing the Shetland series I was excited to start on the Vera books as everyone told me it was the series they preferred. Then I didn‘t love the first book. I picked up this book with markedly less enthusiasm but enjoyed it so much more. The decade old murder of a teenage girl is reopened and Vera must launch her own investigation. Plenty of small town secrets and twists. My appreciation for Vera has grown.

10 years after being convicted of killing her lover's teenaged daughter, Jeannie Long commits suicide, just a few days b4 evidence proving her innocence comes to light. Vera re-investigates the case to find out what led the police astray and who was really guilty.

Nice and twisty. The author misled me into thinking that one character must be guilty even though I didn't want it to be that person. TV Vera is a much toned down version of Book Vera.

I'm starting "Telling Tales" and then depending on how long that takes I will read either "Hidden Depths" or "Last Night in Montreal" .

I am so hooked on Ann Cleeves‘ books. This is an interesting mystery that was really hard to put down. I did not figure out the killer. I had it all wrong. And that‘s the genius of the author. Definitely recommend. As good as the Vera tv shows are, the book are even better.

TrishB I‘ve not watched the series but am making my way through the books. Vera is great! 2y
EvieBee I agree. I love my Vera books! (edited) 2y
kspenmoll In total agreement with you! I am part way through the Vera series. 2y

With the first front of the year having come through last night, I‘ve brought my book outside for the first time since May. With the breeze and lower humidity, it‘s perfect reading weather.

I realized that I hadn‘t posted the book I picked up after bailing on my previous read. This is the second Vera mystery that I‘ve read, and I find it interesting how much of the story so far has focused on other characters and how little on Vera. Of course, I‘m hearing her dialogue in Brenda Blethyn‘s voice 😂

My reading of the Vera series continues with this, the second of the series and, wow, it was excellent. A great deal of the book was told from the vantage of characters other than Vera, but seeing her through the eyes of others was revealing and compelling. Truth is, as a 50-something woman myself I identify with Vera, especially with the tendency of others in her orbit to underestimate her. I hope I‘m always underestimated too. Lol ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of our local PBS stations is showing Vera on Thursday night. I realized that I had never read any of the Stanhope mysteries. Started with this, the first, and thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Tamra I enjoyed the show, I didn‘t realize it was a book series! 4y
CaitlinR @Tamra The books really give you an understanding of Vera and what drives her. Good reads 4y

After spending 4-5 hours redoing my bookcases last weekend, I had a few books to take to the used bookstore for credit. Naturally, I used all of my credit in one trip, even though I have NO space on my shelves for new books. #bookhaul #sorrynotsorry #noselfcontrol #ilovevera

An easy four stars. Felt faster than the first book, possibly because Vera is an established character. Loved that James was a harbour pilot -- yay boats!
