The Fade Out Vol. 1
The Fade Out Vol. 1 | Ed Brubaker
27 posts | 42 read | 41 to read
BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS' newest hit series, THE FADE OUT is an epic noir set in the world of noir itself, the backlots and bars of Hollywood at the end of its Golden Era. A movie stuck in endless reshoots, a writer damaged from the war and lost in the bottle, a dead movie star and the lookalike hired to replace her. Nothing is what it seems in the place where only lies are true. THE FADE OUT is BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS' most ambitious project yet.

I did not know what to expect with this graphic novel, but I was pleasantly surprised. It starts with a murder and takes you into the world of film, with producers, actors, parties and drama, all while the mysterious death hangs in the background. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

#NCBD! Champions #10, Man-Eaters #12, Runaways #25 (if you aren‘t reading Rainbow Rowell‘s reboot of Runaways, you really should—it‘s excellent—but only after reading the original first), Star Pig #3 (only one more issue to go), Marvel Comics #1001, free preview of upcoming Joe Hill comic, Nomen Omen #1 (going to see what this one is all about) & last but not least The Fade Out, Act One, a recommendation from the fabulous staff at Chicago Comics.

Wow, I just gobbled up this whole trilogy. So much fun if you like old Hollywood and Noir. It‘s a little exposition heavy, even for the genre, imo, but the artwork is absolutely gorgeous and the dialogue is spot on. Like a trip the movies ...circa 1948. Love that they even worked Dashiell Hammett in as a character.

As a fan of Old Hollywood, I definitely enjoyed this. The artwork was nice, and I love the noir-like feel to this murder mystery. This is mostly setup for the next volume, which I've already checked out from ComiXology. Recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️#oldhollywood #graphicnovel #noir #comixology

queerbookreader This was such a great comic!! I need to get my butt to the library and get the other volumes out 7y
JenlovesJT47 @queerbookreader have you looked into ComiXology? All of these are available on there and you can get a one month free trial. I think after the first month it's only $5.95 a month so still pretty affordable. I just signed up a couple of days ago. So far it seems they have a decent variety of stuff! 7y
queerbookreader @JenlovesJT47 Yes I have! I've been debating signing up for unlimited for a while because I read a lot of DC which isn't on unlimited, and a lot of times you can only read the first book or two on unlimited. Then gotta buy the rest. Still not sure if it's for me yet 🤔 but I buy most of my digital comics from there and they've got massive sales on right now!! 7y
JenlovesJT47 @queerbookreader cool! I've been thinking about trying Hoopla, not sure how it works exactly so I need to look into it. I just started reading graphic novels last year so I have a lot of catching up to do! 7y

One of my favourite things about graphic novels are the full page illustrations at the back of the book. 💗

HelloImJez Gorgeoussss, the detail! HOW does one get bandages to look simultaneously real but also obviously not real?! 7y
Gina This reminds of a twilight zone episode where the ugly people were considered beautiful and the beautiful people were considered ugly! Such a mind bending tv show for the 50s! 7y

I really enjoyed this! I really want to pick up the second one too. The cover completely intrigued me and the story lived up! (It's a bit outlandish in places, but still interesting!)

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would based on its cold open: 1940s, Hollywood, a screenwriter wakes up with a bad hangover and a strangled starlet in the next room. Snore. Noir is *not my genre, and I almost put this down a few pages in, but its characters were really well developed, with interesting back stories and mysterious motives, and I got sucked in when I gave it a chance.

It's Tinseltown, Hollywood, LA-right smack in the middle of the 1950s, w/ it's WWII vets & black-balling McCarthyism. It's a town where everyone knows everything about everyone-& everyone has something to hide. So, it's needless to say how bad it is when Charlie Parish (screenwriter, veteran, secretly writers-blocked) wakes up from a blackout next to a dead woman. A murdered dead woman. A woman he knows. Knew... (2016 Eisner Best Limited Series)

abbiereadsbooks How is it?! It's been on my TBR list for forever! 8y
bookshopsc @abbiereadsbooks It's a really good series. If you're into pulp or noir, you're there. If not, you just have to remember it is one completed book, and remember to read all volumes in order at once. -Jocelyn 8y
