The author is still in #Australia, so this isn‘t food from #Samoa. Nonetheless I feel compelled to post the dishes eaten in northeastern Australia: flyswisher stew, fried barramundi, snorkers and googs, roast chook. To be honest I haven‘t a clue what these are. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

TheKidUpstairs Barramundi is a delicious fish, and I'm pretty sure roast chook is just roast chicken? The others though, I have NO idea 🤣 1h

Little Dorrit | Charles Dickens
post image

I‘m finally posting my September stats. A good month for me. And the tagged book was my favorite, which was for #whattheDickens

I read 4 Kurt Vonnegut books for #authoramonth,
3 books about #Nicaragua #foodandlit,
1 belated book for #Peru #foodandlit,
2 Louise Penny Three Pines books for #serieslove, &
1 book for work

@Cuilin @Soubhiville @Catsandbooks @TheSpineView

Cuilin How do you think Little Dorrit compares to other Dickens you have read? I personally didn‘t enjoy it as much as others, but I think that was a me thing. 🤷‍♀️ 24h

Still haven‘t started my book for September #FoodAndLit yet, but we had food for #Nicaragua tonight.
Gallo Pinto with cream and cheese.

It was very tasty, especially when paired with corn tortillas 🤭

Adventures of Vela | Albert Wendt
post image

Started Vela, a long epic poem about the life and adventures of mythic Samoan poet Vela, written by Albert Wendt, #Samoa's best-known writer. It is peppered with Samoan words, and I'll just have to go with the flow, enjoy the poetry, and accept that I won't understand every single word or concept. Getting a general idea from the context and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Samoa will have to do.

Fingers crossed that I read more than 4 adult books and a children's book this month!

I also am delaying my #foodandlit Samoa selections until a later date. I'm still working on the last few countries. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

My attempt at vaho/baho: steamed beef marinated in bitter orange juice (or here, a mixture of lime & regular orange) with plantain, green banana & yuca. Served with the white cabbage & tomato salad with lime dressing that seems to be a must with every Nicaraguan dish!
It's no doubt delicious when done properly but I had to find a workaround when it wouldn't cook & the result was disappointing.

Texreader You impress the socks off me, the food you attempt to make! So awesome (even if disappointing). The salad sounds yummy!! 6d

The Jaguar Smile | Salman Rushdie

Mehso-so

When the author travels around #Nicaragua, the Cold War is still being fought on the ground there. The Soviets funded the Sandinistas and the US funded the Contras. He recounted talking to numerous folks, most supporting the Sandinistas, and told some of the country‘s history. Occasionally he‘d weigh in on his opinions, which I didn‘t feel were well-supported by his narrative. In other words, I would have liked more academic input to support ⬇️

Texreader his theses. I had a hard time connecting his logic. Maybe it was me and I was bored with the meandering nature of the book. But I always appreciate reading about travels through foreign lands, and the insight of the people. I probably would have liked it better as a travel journal. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks 6d

The author is hiking in the woods of New Zealand. This would be a lovely quote but for the author‘s pettiness up to this point. He has brutalized the Māori and New Zealanders.

For example: “Others evolved into enormous and complacent specimens, like the spoiled and overfed children I had seen in Auckland…” & “the most terrible aspect … was that the New Zealanders themselves did not seem to know what was happening to them in their decline”

⬇️
