49 posts | 50 read | 46 to read
The 20th anniversary edition of the first novel in William Kent Kruegers beloved and bestselling Cork OConnor mystery seriesincludes an exclusive bonus short story! A brilliant achievement, and one every crime reader and writer needs to celebrate. Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Glass Houses A master craftsman [and] a series of books written with a grace and precision so stunning that youd swear the stories were your own. Craig Johnson, author of the Walt Longmire series Among thoughtful readers, William Kent Krueger holds a very special place in the pantheon. C.J. Box, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Disappeared In eighteen novels over twenty years, William Kent Krueger has enthralled readers with the adventures of P.I. Cork OConnor, former sheriff of Aurora, Minnesotaselling more than 1.5 million copies of his books and winning the Edgar Award, Minnesota Book Award, Northeastern Minnesota Book Award, Dilys Award, Lovey Award, and Anthony Award along the way. Now, in this special anniversary edition, longtime fans and new readers alike can read the novel that first introduced Corcoran Cork OConnor to the world. Part Irish, part Anishinaabe Indian, Cork is having difficulty dealing with the marital meltdown that has separated him from his children, getting by on heavy doses of caffeine, nicotine, and guilt. Once a cop on Chicagos South Side, theres not much that can shock him. But when the towns judge is brutally murdered, and a young Eagle Scout is reported missing, Cork takes on this complicated and perplexing case of conspiracy, corruption, and a small-town secret that hits painfully close to home.

Excellent. Interesting characters, great setting, mystery (which admittedly is pretty straight forward & I was able to figure out much of it but didn‘t care because it was well told), & high stakes. A judge is murdered, a boy goes missing, & there are a lot of theories & very little trust. Really, really good for a debut. Not sure why I‘ve never read this series but I loved the book and will definitely keep going.

I was looking for a new series to read this summer and came across these ones about sheriff Cork O‘Connor. I feel like I might have read this one years ago but didn‘t remember until near the end. I liked it and plan to read more in the series.

This was the “local author” pick for my book club this year. Good story, but totally dated female characters. Mostly defined by their breasts, hips, and thighs. It was written 20 years ago, but good grief. Yikes.

A darn good mystery in Northern Minnesota. First in a series.

Just requested the 2nd in the series. Enjoyed it so much.

#BookishMoodBoard @AkashaVampie

I just finished a 19-book series by W. K. Krueger and truly loved each one. I‘m highlighting the first book which introduces the setting, plot & subplots, and protagonists in such a way that one becomes quickly invested in the characters and outcomes. I like the idea of the mood board and feel its importance in comprehension and analysis of what we read-thanks for thinking of me ❤️

Krueger's writing is straightforward & doesn't pull punches. His storylines are easy to follow with characters who feel almost universally realistic without hyperbole or stereotyping. Fantastic atmosphere that captures the Minnesota landscape & cultures. Though not OwnVoices, I understand that he consulted with tribal members as to content & portrayals. A fast-moving plot with interesting twists & turns. I will definitely be continuing the series.

I enjoyed reading this novel. Krueger is no Louise Penny, but I cared about (most of) the characters, the setting is interesting, and the mystery is complex but not ridiculously so. I can see myself reading more from this series.

2nd book of the month and I'm starting to feel my reading mojo coming back.

Really enjoyed Cork O'Connor and can't wait to hang out some more with him.

This fulfills my #Booked2022 prompt of a murder mystery. Lots of murder-lots of mystery in this book!

Finished my first book since January! “Vespertine“ was a really good YA fantasy series start.

“Iron Lake“ is my current read and I'm enjoying this first book in the Cork O'Connor series. So far, I can see myself reading more in this series.

Up next-the newest Havill mystery. I've heard so-so things about this installment but I'm hoping for good things.

It feels so good to be back reading again!

Sometimes this was a little slow paced and the author spent too much time on Cork‘s personal life and neglected the mystery in the first part of the book. It picked up though, and I liked it. #audiowalk

I‘ve seen this one pop up on “best of” lists for years. It‘s a good mystery. A disgraced sheriff who has lost his family and his job, stumbles upon the body of a dead judge. He soon realizes everyone in his small Minnesota town has secrets. It kept me interested and I think I‘ll continue the series, but don‘t feel any desire to pick the next one up immediately. The priest was one of my favorite characters.

Bookwormjillk I've read the first three now and I think they get better. 3y
AvidReader25 @Bookwormjillk I‘m glad you shared that! I was hoping they would. 3y
Bookwormjillk @AvidReader25 also I‘m a huge audiobook person but I think these are much better in print 3y
AvidReader25 @Bookwormjillk that‘s really helpful for me. I‘m a big audio person as well, but did not love the narrator at all. I‘ll try the next one in print. 3y

Lots of secrets in Aurora, Minnesota Murder, blackmail, and overall deception. I enjoyed this book but the ending was not predictable. I did enjoy the events leading to the ending though. A surprising death broke my heart though. I recommend this book if this appeals to you.

15 years ago my mom gave me a book called Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger. I was hooked by the O‘Connor family and the community they lived in up in Northern Minnesota. These stories keep you #reading until the early morning hours, but the characters and the social issues behind their actions are what keep me reading. Yesterday I received 1 of 300 copies of a never published Cork O‘Connor short story. I can‘t wait to share it with my mom.
