This book was left behind by one of my daughters when she moved out years ago, and it was the perfect choice for prompt 29 of #52bookclub24: “Published in a Year of the Dragon“. It was published in 1976 and, as the title suggests, it features dragons! I loved the story! Wish I had read it when I was young.

willaful I loved this and the sequel when I was a teen.... 2mo

TheAromaofBooks This is a great series. 2mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB I was very excited when I saw it was published in 1976! 2mo
kwmg40 @willaful @TheAromaofBooks I‘m definitely going to real more in this series! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks It's a little weird because there is the whole long Pern series, and within that series there are two trilogies, including this one. I liked these three books better when I read them within the context of the longer series, but there are like 20+ in the Pern series, so it's a serious commitment 😂 2mo
PuddleJumper Oh the nostalgia! I devoured them in my teenage years 2mo
Andrew65 Love the look of this. Well done 🎉🎉🎉 2mo
Larkken These were my favorites in the Pern series! (Also, possibly not a coincidence, my first McCaffreys) glad you enjoyed the first one. 2mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks @Larkken I'd read another book in the Pern series several years ago. I did like it, but for some reason, never got back to the series until now. Well, I'm convinced I need to read more from the series! 2mo
kwmg40 @PuddleJumper I'd read a lot of Heinlein in my teenage years and some of them make me cringe now when I reread them, though they're still enjoyable in many ways. I imagine the Pern series stands up better to the test of time! 2mo
kwmg40 @Andrew65 Thanks! 2mo

The good: World Building and Plot! McCaffrey is a master.
The bad: Outdated understanding of consent. F'lar can also be very 1960s sometimes.
The GREAT: DRAGONS. They're the voices of reason and the emotional anchors that keep the humans from becoming at times irredeemable. Pernese dragons are the platonic ideal for human-dragon bonding and set the template for all the future variations thereof in fiction.

Revisiting Pern via audiobook. Aside from some of the marked blind spots of 1960s second wave feminism, the world building and writerly craftmanship still hold up. I read the #Harperhall trilogy first, then #Dragonflight, #Dragonquest, and #TheWhiteDragon when I was still in elementary school and they got me into sci fi as a lifelong reader. Coming back decades later is eye opening, sometimes alarming, and yet still vindicating.

Next in the Pern novels is one of my favourites from the series. It introduces the fire lizards, a miniature species of dragon from which the original colonists bio engineered the dragons. Menolly is the youngest daughter of a SeaHolder with very parochial views who refuses to let her make music. While running away she comes across a queen Fire lizard & helps her save her eggs from Thread, impressing 9 in the process. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023

Readergrrl I adored this whole series!!! 12mo
TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! 12mo

The 2nd Pern book starts where the 1st left us, but there‘s dissent brewing over the Oldtimer dragon riders that Lessa brought forward to help fight Thread. F‘lars left trying to fix the damage they cause but everyone‘s angry, distrustful & upset. I love this series & world, as you can see, I‘ve reread them many times over. Highly recommend. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #Pop23

Andrew65 Excellent 👏👏👏 Too many books to little time 😂 12mo
TheSpineView Awesome 12mo
TheAromaofBooks You're making me want to reread these, and I do NOT have time for that kind of commitment right now 😂 12mo

2023 may be even worse than last year!Sorry I disappeared again, first Dad(who is finally out of hospital as of this weekend🙌)then my daughter(that‘s living here!)gets Covid & has to leave us looking after her 18month old coz his father is an asshole! It‘s been a tough week. But I have read! I finished this audiobook a few days ago & bubs finally at daycare so I can post it. I love Anne McCaffrey, she blends SciFi & fantasy like no one else.5⭐️👇

Lizpixie Go read her books! The Pern ones, The Tower & the Hive ones, all of them! #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #AwesomeApril (edited) 12mo

TheSpineView Love this series! 12mo
TheAromaofBooks I read through all the Pern books a few years ago and loved them. I read them in published order at the time, but made notes about the roughly chronological order I would love to read them in next time! Hope things around your house get back on track soon!! ❤ 12mo
Larkken @TheAromaofBooks @Lizpixie how do you both feel about the Pern books the son wrote? I haven‘t gotten into them yet but always meant to do a reread and wasn‘t sure whether they should be included… also, lots of love lizpixie- that all sounds like a lot 💕 12mo
Andrew65 Sending best wishes, hope you have managed to stay free of COvID yourself. ❤️ 12mo
TheAromaofBooks @Larkken - I honestly wasn't a fan of Todd's books, and ended up stopping after I had read three of his and found them increasingly annoying haha I read Dragonsblood, Dragon's Fire, Dragon Harper, and half of Dragonheart. Those books all covered basically the same time period and just kind of kept telling the same story about this plague over and over from slightly different perspectives. I found the writing to be lazy, not consistent with other ⬇ 12mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Pern lore, and he also took what had been adult scifi and suddenly made all the main characters 12-14yrs old instead, which got kind of weird and a little creepy when it still involved these characters having sex. I dunno, I know a lot of people really liked them, but I thought his quality of writing was really poor, especially compared to the amazing body of work Anne wrote about this world. 12mo
Lizpixie @Larkken I agree with @TheAromaofBooks his writing has nothing on his mothers, which is unfortunate coz there‘s still so much you could tell about Pern. But I also feel that way about most of her books, especially the Tower & the Hive series. I can‘t say if it‘s because he truly is that bad a writer or I just miss Anne‘s way of writing. I also did NOT like Brandon Sandersons WOT books either prob for the same reason, though I enjoy HIS novels! 12mo
Lizpixie @hannah-leeloo @Larkken @Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks thank you for your support! It‘s been nuts around here but thankfully, still Covid free🙌🙌 Daughter comes home tonight, she‘s much better so hubby can collapse, 18month olds are hard on us middle age people! Dad is also much better, my eldest daughter is going to build a granny flat at her place for him so he won‘t be alone anymore. He‘s hitting 2yrs since Mum died & he‘s not handling it well😢 12mo
TheAromaofBooks Aww that's so hard about your dad!! When my grandma passed away it was so hard for my grandpa, and hard for us as he didn't want to leave the house where they had lived for decades (understandably), but we were concerned about him being alone. It's hard to find a new life balance. Hopefully it all works out for him to have his own space at your daughter's but still be a closer part of family life!! 12mo

Couldn‘t sleep(again!🥱)so I‘ve managed to listen to 20 chapters of the tagged book & 42 lines of this dragon scale chunky shawl. I love the color combo & I think that 2 cream stripes is enough to put on each end. Once I‘ve finished, washed it in wool softener & blocked it out, it‘ll be much bigger. Plenty big enough to keep me warm on cold winter nights sitting up reading(or #audioknitting more projects!) #AwesomeApril #readathon #LitsyCrafters

I‘m #audioknitting a dragon scale chunky shawl for the coming winter, to the 1st Dragons of Pern book. I thought it fitting. It‘s knitted using Fiddlesticks Superb Big in Teal & Cream. So far I‘ve done two of the cream stripes& am tossing up a 3rd or leave it at two each end. F‘lar, bronze dragon rider is on Search for new riders when the Red Star forewarns the coming of Thread once more. #KnittersOfLitsy #LitsyCrafters #AwesomeApril #readathon

dabbe Love the colors! 💚 12mo
