Happy Holidays everyone! Can‘t wait to see everyone post their #bookishgifts! This year my hubby got me this Dragonflight first edition! Apparently it‘s one of the first “Romantasy” books published! Has anyone ever read it?

Daisey I haven‘t read all of the Pern books, but I really enjoyed the ones I did. It‘s an interesting mix of science fiction and dragon fantasy. 1mo

Not dragon lizards as my secret (secret) friend likes English dragons. NB will not be making hats with this yarn again as I had the opportunity to watch it turn from beanie to bucket hat in three days.

1. I used to be able to bend over and touch my hands flat to the floor while keeping my legs straight. Those days are long gone!
2. Lessa has a special talent with dragons.

TheSpineView I remember the Dragon Riders of Pern series. Great books. Thanks for playing! 9mo

This book was left behind by one of my daughters when she moved out years ago, and it was the perfect choice for prompt 29 of #52bookclub24: “Published in a Year of the Dragon“. It was published in 1976 and, as the title suggests, it features dragons! I loved the story! Wish I had read it when I was young.

willaful I loved this and the sequel when I was a teen.... 11mo

TheAromaofBooks This is a great series. 11mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB I was very excited when I saw it was published in 1976! 11mo
kwmg40 @willaful @TheAromaofBooks I‘m definitely going to real more in this series! 11mo
TheAromaofBooks It's a little weird because there is the whole long Pern series, and within that series there are two trilogies, including this one. I liked these three books better when I read them within the context of the longer series, but there are like 20+ in the Pern series, so it's a serious commitment 😂 11mo
PuddleJumper Oh the nostalgia! I devoured them in my teenage years 11mo
Andrew65 Love the look of this. Well done 🎉🎉🎉 11mo
Larkken These were my favorites in the Pern series! (Also, possibly not a coincidence, my first McCaffreys) glad you enjoyed the first one. 11mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks @Larkken I'd read another book in the Pern series several years ago. I did like it, but for some reason, never got back to the series until now. Well, I'm convinced I need to read more from the series! 11mo
kwmg40 @PuddleJumper I'd read a lot of Heinlein in my teenage years and some of them make me cringe now when I reread them, though they're still enjoyable in many ways. I imagine the Pern series stands up better to the test of time! 11mo
kwmg40 @Andrew65 Thanks! 11mo

The good: World Building and Plot! McCaffrey is a master.
The bad: Outdated understanding of consent. F'lar can also be very 1960s sometimes.
The GREAT: DRAGONS. They're the voices of reason and the emotional anchors that keep the humans from becoming at times irredeemable. Pernese dragons are the platonic ideal for human-dragon bonding and set the template for all the future variations thereof in fiction.
(see long winded review on LT)

Revisiting Pern via audiobook. Aside from some of the marked blind spots of 1960s second wave feminism, the world building and writerly craftmanship still hold up. I read the #Harperhall trilogy first, then #Dragonflight, #Dragonquest, and #TheWhiteDragon when I was still in elementary school and they got me into sci fi as a lifelong reader. Coming back decades later is eye opening, sometimes alarming, and yet still vindicating.

Next in the Pern novels is one of my favourites from the series. It introduces the fire lizards, a miniature species of dragon from which the original colonists bio engineered the dragons. Menolly is the youngest daughter of a SeaHolder with very parochial views who refuses to let her make music. While running away she comes across a queen Fire lizard & helps her save her eggs from Thread, impressing 9 in the process. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023

The 2nd Pern book starts where the 1st left us, but there‘s dissent brewing over the Oldtimer dragon riders that Lessa brought forward to help fight Thread. F‘lars left trying to fix the damage they cause but everyone‘s angry, distrustful & upset. I love this series & world, as you can see, I‘ve reread them many times over. Highly recommend. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #Pop23

TheAromaofBooks You're making me want to reread these, and I do NOT have time for that kind of commitment right now 😂 2y
