I‘ve had this on my shelf for a long time & I‘d really love to tackle it this year! Is anyone interested in a buddy read?

It‘s a trilogy of historical novels set in 14th-c. Norway, originally published in 1920, 1921, & 1922. These would work well for anyone finishing the #192025 challenge this year! I‘m planning to use the first 2 books for 1920 & 1921.

I was thinking May—July or June—August, one book per month. Comment if you‘re interested!

Ruthiella I would be interested! I have an ebook copy and have been meaning to read it for a while now. 2d
Deblovestoread I‘d be interested! It is such a chunkster I‘m not sure I could do a book a month but I‘m willing to try 😂 2d
Andrea313 I'd give it a try starting in June! 2d

Daisey I also have this on my TBR and have been thinking I need a readalong to get me started on it. I‘d probably prefer starting in June to work better around some other long reads I hope to fit in. 2d
quietjenn Yes! I was just thinking of this today, oddly enough. 2d
Librarybelle I‘d be interested! 2d
LeahBergen It‘s so good! 2d
lauraisntwilder Yes! This has literally been on my nightstand for over a year. 2d
MeganAnn I finished book 1 at the beginning of the year and have plans to eventually tackle the rest of the book before the end of the year. I‘d love to join in for books 2 & 3 when you get to them. Book 1 was very good. 2d
MaureenMc I‘m interested! Been meaning to read this one for a while. 2d
Amiable This was my #chunksterchallenge read a few years ago! 1d
Gleefulreader I‘d be interested! 1d
AmyG I have read the first 2…and need to read the third. I‘d love to join in. 1d
BarbaraJean @Ruthiella @Andrea313 @Daisey @quietjenn @Librarybelle @lauraisntwilder @MaureenMc @Gleefulreader 🎉Yay! We‘ll start in June, then! I‘m thinking one general discussion/book & probably a few other posts along the way. @Deblovestoread It should work out to just under 100 pages/week—that sounds maybe doable 😂 @MeganAnn @AmyG Would love to have you join! I can tag you once we get to your non-read books, or for the whole thing, whichever you prefer. (edited) 22h
Librarybelle Sounds good to me! 22h
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen @Amiable I‘ve heard such good things about it for so long—it‘s time to finally read it! 22h
Amiable @BarbaraJean I mean … it‘s better than “Clarissa.” 😖😀 22h
BarbaraJean @Amiable 😂😂That‘s definitely “damning with faint praise”!! One of my college professors (who‘s a medievalist) highly recommended it and her taste *usually* aligns with mine—we‘ll see! 22h
Amiable @BarbaraJean There was a long stretch in the middle that I had to push myself through. And some of the main character‘s choices irritated me. But I would definitely recommend it as a worthwhile read. (edited) 21h
Ruthiella Awesome! 👍 18h
BarbaraJean @Amiable Makes sense, and it's good to know that the middle might end up being a bit of a slog. Glad to hear you found it worthwhile overall! 18h

Pickpick

3/5 stars for this “Barely a Bitsy” (just made it !) level in #ChunksterChallenge2025. I liked it well enough. I did. It just seemed … bloated. The action takes place over a 14-day period and it felt like I was reading every minute in real time. I did enjoy the descriptions of the Tudor period, though. Perhaps I‘ll pick up a nonfiction history of the era next. I‘ll probably continue with the series, but I‘m not in a hurry to do so.

Cuilin Perfect description, I‘m halfway and only a few days have passed. 3w

Pickpick

Completed the Chunkster level for #ChunksterChallenge2025. I‘d give it a pick because it is a story well told (and well translated, if you get the P+V version). I wouldn‘t say it‘s the “greatest novel of all time,” as some reviews call it. It does provide an interesting historical context of its time. And now I can finally check it off my list. ✔️

monalyisha I *loved* this when I read it. But that was over 15 years ago! If I remember correctly, I may have even mentioned Levin in my internet dating profile (something about a “sweaty, lean farmer with metaphysical concerns”?). 😅🥵 4w
Amiable @monalyisha If I were going to pick a sweaty Russian out of the bunch, it would definitely be Levin! 😄 And I also loved Kitty. Anna, not so much. I actually felt sorry for Karenin. Stiva and Vronsky were basically Russian frat boys -- ugh. 4w
CoverToCoverGirl Congratulations! 🎉 I have attempted this book several times but could never get past the first handful of chapters. 4w
Amiable @CoverToCoverGirl The fact that the chapters are all pretty short is basically what propelled me through some of the sections, I'm not gonna lie. 😃 I could read two chapters (i.e. 5 pages) and feel like I'd accomplished something for the day. 4w
willaful Liking Levin is pretty much all I remember from this book. 😂 4w

Mollyanna @dabbe I am definitely looking forward to DC. I just need to finish one of my current reads first. Hoping to start it later this month. I have Nickleby on my TBR as well. 1mo

Last night, made it to page 20 of 705 pages...the beginnings of an epic 🥳🐉📚💝.

It's early, yet loving this. Like how Murtagh can communicate with his dragon.

Chunkster Tip

If reading a Chunkster before bed, try not to doze off...705 pages wrapped in hardcover becomes mighty hazardous when it smashes onto your face 😂📚💝.

AnnCrystal @Amiable Oh no! Made me laugh out loud that I'm surprised I didn't wake the household 😂...lucky a bruise hasn't formed 🤞😉👍📚💝. 1mo

DogMomIrene 😂😂😂 I stopped reading all physical books before bed because I was knocking them everywhere. It‘s e-books only now. Thanks for making me laugh. 1mo
AnnCrystal @DogMomIrene👏😂...good switch 😉👍...I would probably do the same if I could get my eyes to like screens, they seem to tear at my eyes if I focus for too long. There is also something magical that I find in the old fashioned book 📚💝. 1mo

Next book for #LiteraryCrew hosted by @Librarybelle . My edition has 528 pages so it will work for the #chunksterchallenge (bitsy chunkster) and #allergictochunksters too! 🎉

Edit: And this is perfect for #LitsyAtoZ #LetterV !

@Amiable @julieclair @Texreader

Librarybelle Good luck! 1mo

Sace @Librarybelle thanks! Don‘t tell anyone but I read the first chapter today. I‘m worried about being able to finish on time 😂 1mo
Sace @julieclair I love that it works for several Litsy events! (edited) 1mo
tpixie @Sace mine just came in the mail yesterday. I wonder if I‘ll be able to finish it also with February being a short month too. I guess if I run into too much trouble, I can audio it also… 📕 🎧 1mo
Sace @tpixie I‘ve already resigned myself to not finishing on time (and that‘s with doing some on audio). 1mo
tpixie @Sace good point- we can take longer, if needed! 1mo

2025 Litsy book Challenges I've joined 📚🥳.

Thank you @TheSpineView &
@Andrew65 and @Amiable for hosting these Challenges 📚💝📚.

👇

AnnCrystal For SeriesLove2025, I'm excited to continue the RileyThorn Mysteries along with a seemingly endless-list of other series (some on my bookshelf, some not) that would likely take me until 2035 to complete 😂...🤔📚🥳.

AnnCrystal The tagged works for either challenge, since Murtagh is book five (?) in a series. It is the only book I have in this series, yet I've read that it can be a standalone...hope.

Been really excited to begin this read, yet I just recently realized how many pages...705! I was considering stashing this with some other big books to read another time when I saw the #ChunksterChallenge! Seemed like a “read now“ sign 😂.

AnnCrystal I will begin this challenge with Murtagh, and continue with a new Chunkster once I've finished...one Chunkster at a time 😂📚💝.

Amiable One chunkster at a time is a fabulous strategy! 👍🏼👍🏼 2mo
AnnCrystal @Amiable too excited 💕📚🥳💝. 2mo
Amiable @AnnCrystal The secret with chunksters is to just keep reading. Even if it‘s only few pages at a time. It‘s the forward momentum that propels you to the finish. I find that if I don‘t pick it up every day, it‘s easier to not pick it up at all. 2mo
TheSpineView So glad to have you! 2mo
AnnCrystal Thank You @Amiable, that is absolutely true 👏📚📖💖. 2mo
