TheAromaofBooks My inclination is to like Cynthia, but we'll have to see if she ends up taking advantage of Molly's good nature. 6d
Ruthiella Mrs. Gibson‘s indifference anyone being there to greet Cynthia at the train is sad. She hasn‘t seen her daughter in TWO YEARS? (edited) 6d
See All 9 Comments
Bookwormjillk I surprised myself by liking Cynthia today. This is a long book huh? 6d
mcctrish I don‘t not like Cynthia but anyone who says they don‘t love anyone but will choose to love Molly seems a bit sketch 6d
ElizaMarie @Ruthiella and the whole sending her away immediately after her daddy died - that Mrs G is not maternal at all!!!! 5d
Bklover I‘m with all of you! Cynthia seems wonderful in spite of the neglect of her mother. Hope it holds up! A teeny bit concerned that they might end up wanting the same guy. @Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks 5d
Clare-Dragonfly Hmm, I‘m reserving judgment on Cynthia. I like her forthrightness, but I‘m nervous about her saying she doesn‘t love anyone! 5d
dabbe I have finally caught up! 🤣🤣🤣 Whew! 😅 Cynthia reminds me of Estella in GREAT EXPECTATIONS: icily cold and knows it. I'm reserving judgment on her as well, though I do like her WAY more than her mother. Holy guacamole on her! 5d

willaful Yeah, back to the lack of narrative. 😂 Joe's story made me very sad, because my daughter is disabled and I worry so much about what will happen when we're gone, especially now. I bet poor Joe's mother was fretted to death about it. 5mo
See All 21 Comments
BarkingMadRead @willaful I worked with special needs kids before I retired, and stuff like this makes me crazy. I have zero patience for it 5mo
Bookwormjillk So random. I thought it was because I was sleepy and dozing off, but then I went back to read again and nope. Just random. 5mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I had so much trouble focusing 🤣 5mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm guessing still no plot? 😆 5mo
TheAromaofBooks I've always read about calf's foot jelly in old books as a great delicacy, and I can see why after reading about how time-consuming and complicated it is to make... but I definitely don't want to try it! 😐 5mo
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig I feel like we got teased with some plot and then it was snatched away 🤣 5mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks hard pass 🤣🤣 5mo
AllDebooks Some things belong in the past, like that jelly 🫣 5mo
Cuilin @AllDebooks the jelly and fox hunting!! 5mo
dabbe I gotta admit, I skimmed through this chapter and read like this: the dull green blahblahblah ... the interesting green ... blahblahblah ... fox hunting omg skip ... disgusting jelly omg skip ... blahblahblah reverend and wife then both die + congregation ... blahblahblah done. 😂 5mo
willaful I had trouble concentrating too. Thought it was the ambien. 😂 5mo
mcctrish How we get from #outwiththeoldinwiththenew clergy to Luney Joe to who takes a bath where and when is beyond me @dabbe there‘s skip and then there is skim 5mo
Bklover @willaful This made me laugh!!😂😂 5mo
willaful @Bklover glad to be of service. :-) 5mo
dabbe @mcctrish Perhaps a skip would be better--as in today's chapter as well! #oy 5mo
mcctrish @dabbe maybe skip to the end 🤣🤣🤣 5mo
dabbe @mcctrish If you will, I will. 🤩 But since I did do that for verdant-verdure UDOLPHO, I feel obligated to see this through. Sooooooo close! 😂 5mo
mcctrish @dabbe we are so close it has to count either way 🤣🤣😆 5mo

Ch 2.8: a blessedly short chapter about Valancourt #sosad #sosad #sosad #partytime 🎉🎉🎉 #hashtagbrigade

TheAromaofBooks Mine morning routine is now to count the pages of today's chapter and I was SO HAPPY today 😂 7mo

BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks such a gift 🤣🤣🤣 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Really the #sosad #sosad #sosad #partytime tags kind of describe my feelings towards the last few days' chapters 😂 😂 😂 7mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 7mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks OMG ... so true!!!! 😂😂😂 7mo
mcctrish I realized at the start of my reading today we are only 43% through this nonsense and I could cry. And then we get a short chapter which I should be thrilled about, except we‘ve been reading for 100 years and nothing but crying has happened except V, after moping around in Emily‘s absence has moved to Paris to become a club kid 🤯 #wherethefuckisthisgoing (edited) 7mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 this is scarily accurate 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t like the short chapters! I am updating my reading percentage daily in Storygraph and when the percentage stays the same Storygraph thinks I haven‘t read any of this book 🤣 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly So V hung around until his regiment couldn‘t do without him anymore. And since they needed him so badly he… made social connections and started a gambling habit? 🤨 7mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly boys are dumb and story graph needs to understand that 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
ElizaMarie @MccTrish - YES!!! This book needs to #DOSOMETHING !!! #GOSOMEWHERE !! 7mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly StoryGraph will not like my Serial app micro-aggression reading style 🤣🤣 7mo
mcctrish @ElizaMarie it‘s ridiculous 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish micro-aggression is a good way to read this book 🤣 It isn‘t Storygraph‘s fault, I would be able to use page numbers if I were reading a physical book, but also there‘s *no way* I would read this in hard copy! 7mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly same 7mo

Clare-Dragonfly I think Jan should have gone ahead and stayed in her room. Let Maxim deal with the consequences! He deserves to squirm a little! (edited) 1y
See All 22 Comments
Clare-Dragonfly I mean, she ALSO should have told Beatrice about Danny setting her up. But let‘s be real, that was never going to happen. 1y
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly and she had the perfect opportunity! Whyyyyyy did she not?!? 1y
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly YES! She should have told Max and Bea about Mrs Danvers. 1y
peanutnine She definitely should have told them about Danvers but like @Clare-Dragonfly I'm not surprised she didn't. She doesn't seem to realize that she has power over her as an employer. But she probably thought they wouldn't believe her 1y
daena Maxim is the worst! As the chapters move forward my disgust of him grows. 1y
willaful @daena I'm really feeling why the author was pissed at this being called a romance. 1y
daena @willaful totally! 💯 1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @peanutnine @Clare-Dragonfly I never under when characters don't tell what happened. I would be yelling it out. And #DreadfulDanny would be packing her bags. Honestly if she just told Bea she would have told Maxim and he would have fired Mrs D immediately. 1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig ^understand. Litsy needs edit option on comments! 1y
dabbe I, too, want the narrator to snap back and have a backbone, but she just doesn't. She's terrified of Danvers (and even Maxim at times) and is so UNSURE of herself that she can't fight back. Max wanted her as Alice in Wonderland--fiitting since Alice is a complete innocent, not worldly like Rebecca or Caroline de Winter. The irony is, though, that Max is primarily responsible for Jan's loss of innocence. #sosad 😞 1y
Ruthiella @dabbe Perfect analysis! 👌 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly @peanutnine @Crinoline_Laphroaig @dabbe @Ruthiella - I'm interested to see if Jan even REALIZES that Danny set her up. I think she is going to excuse Mrs. D with a kind of “oh she didn't know people would be upset/it was an accident“ thing. 1y
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks that‘s a good point, although that creepy smile on Mrs D should hopefully clue her in! 1y
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks If she does that, it will totally be a throw-the-book moment for me! 1y
peanutnine @julieclair @TheAromaofBooks omg same! Hopefully she isn't THAT naive by now 1y
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Agree! Jan wanted so much to believe that Danny was finally being nice to her that she had the rose-colored glasses look in her eyes. And, too true, @BarkingMadRead. That smirk and the closing of the door in the west wing should have been HUGE clues for Jan. What a scene! 1y

Cuilin That ending 😢 💔 2y
Deblovestoread I finished a few days ago. What a heartbreaking story. How I wanted happiness for Tess and how I wanted the men who let her down to pay. So glad to have finally read this classic even with its sadness. Thanks for keeping me motivated! 2y

currentlyreadinginCO This was fun to read together! Poor Tess! 2y
Bookwormjillk That about sums it up. The one thing I remember about reading this in high school is my teacher going into a deep explanation about Stonehenge. I guess because if he told us what this book was really about he would have been fired? 2y
TheBookHippie It‘s just #SOSAD …. Thanks for pulling us through!!! 2y
quietjenn Thanks for leading us through a terrific, and terrifically devastating read. Can't believe I remembered almost nothing of it. 2y
Ruthiella Thank for your fearless leadership @BarkingMadRead ! 👏👏👏🤩 The subtitle to this book should be “a novel of poor communication and bad timing”! 2y
eeclayton Thanks for leading us @BarkingMadRead and thanks everyone for your comments and posts. I couldn't take part in the discussions as much as I had wanted to because it was a really busy period for me both at work and in private, but I was following and enjoying your comments all the while 💕 Hardy broke my heart but I loved the book all the same! 2y
dabbe Thanks @BarkingMadRead for getting us through this. 🤗 Tess will stay with me for a long time. I'd add that the moral of the story is to never fall asleep on the side of the road in the middle of a dark night. 😃 2y
julieclair Absolutely heartbreaking ending. 💔 Thanks, @BarkingMadRead for your (as always) excellent leadership through this sad tale. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe One of a number of morals, I‘d say! Another might be “don‘t rape women, even if they are asleep, no matter how hot you think they are.” 2y
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly 🤩 2y
Daisey I knew going in that this was not going to be happy, but it was also quite different from what I expected. I also liked it better than expected. After his treatment of Tess, I was kind of hoping Angel was just going to waste away from his illness, rather than get another chance. 2y
Bklover What a wonderful and brutally sad book! I do find it frustrating that Angel gets another chance with Tess‘s sister! Thanks @BarkingMadRead for your guidance and humor. Definitely the only way I got through this one! 2y
KAO Thanks for the company and much needed comic relief on this journey with poor Tess! This was my first group read done with a paced plan, and the encouragement helped get me through a challenging book. I enjoyed it—even if there was some gnashing of teeth at every tragic turn! 2y
eeclayton @Daisey I was hoping that too! 2y
BarkingMadRead @KAO I wish we had something more fun for you to start with 🤣 2y
Bluebird Thanks @BarkingMadRead i had remembered so little of this book from my prior read that this felt like the first time. So terribly sad! You really helped get us all through this tragic book. I really enjoyed(!?!) this group reading. 2y

I am a day late posting my weekly update (very sick yesterday-didn‘t want to move). I was able to get in 3 gardening sessions and 1 meditation so I hit my goal. I also read or listened to 7 short stories/books (703 pages). I‘ll count that as 2 books out of 6 for my goal. Points: I‘ll edit once I count them up. My favorite was the Grumpy Cat book. #shewillbemissed #sosad

JaclynW Sorry you have been sick! I hope a speedy recovery is on its way! 6y
jb72 @JaclynW Thanks! I‘m much better now. Maybe it was food poisoning?! Much to do today (chores - boo!). 6y

Mehso-so

That feeling you get when a favorite author produces subpar work. :( #sosad Goodman is usually great at criticizing systems we subscribe to--see INTUITION, KAATERSKILL FALLS. This is a shallow books vs video games screed. I wish she'd focused more on her teacher and a three dimensional high school experience. The video corp storyline was contrived and convenient. Startlingly one dimensional villain there, did nothing enlightening for the story
