Orange Is the New Black
Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison | Piper Kerman
NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES #1NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money ten years before. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187424one of the millions of people who disappear down the rabbit hole of the American penal system. From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Kermans story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prisonwhy it is we lock so many away and what happens to them when theyre there. Praise for Orange Is the New Black Fascinating . . . The true subject of this unforgettable book is female bonding and the ties that even bars cant unbind.People (four stars) I loved this book. Its a story rich with humor, pathos, and redemption. What I did not expect from this memoir was the affection, compassion, and even reverence that Piper Kerman demonstrates for all the women she encountered while she was locked away in jail. I will never forget it.Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love This book is impossible to put down because [Kerman] could be you. Or your best friend. Or your daughter.Los Angeles Times Moving . . . transcends the memoir genres usual self-centeredness to explore how human beings can always surprise you.USA Today Its a compelling awakening, and a harrowing oneboth for the reader and for Kerman.Newsweek.com Look for special features inside. Read Harder 2019 has a book written in prison as task 20 and it took me far too long to realize this was the perfect book for me to accomplish this task. ⠀
It's a really good memoir that talks about Kerman's crime and the legal process and being in the prison system. I never watched the show, except the pilot episode, but I really appreciate Kerman sharing her story.

The Netflix‘s original, inspired by the story of Piper Kerman is good on its own. However the book tells a completely different and more powerful story. While the TV series adds a ton of drama to stretch time and keep people interested, Ms Kerman tells a more honest and enlightening story. The book was so compelling, and I feel like I have a whole new look on the American Prison system.

#MusicalNewYear #CellBlockTango I only watched season one of Orange but it was enough to make me pick up the memoir which I enjoyed. I read this memoir in 15-20 minute increments during lunch at work. Piper gets involved with an older woman who makes oodles of money via drug trafficking. Piper transports drug money, once, and ends up in a legal quagmire that ends in jail. A very interesting read. I really liked her descriptions of her time in prison. I may have to watch the Netflix series. I gave the book to a coworker so here‘s a photo of my friend ‘s beauty berry.

Gezemice I have enjoyed this one. An insight into a world I knew next to nothing about. 11mo

This is a great example of the adaptation being better than the book. I was totally put off by the memoir bc I thought Piper was clearly benefitting from white privilege, and she made me 🙄. On the show she still makes me 🙄, but there are so many other amazing characters to balance her out. I‘m really enjoying the latest season.

I appreciate how Kerman accepted the consequences for her crime and didn't spend a lot of time in the book feeling sorry for herself. I think she also brought up some important issues with our justice and prison systems, but only at a shallow, surface-level. I just didn't quite know how to take some of the situations, like where she was eating a foie gras sandwich while waiting for her intake into prison.

Djspens The series is sooo much better 😂 1y

Audiobook narrators usually don't get the praise that they deserve, so let me say that Cassandra Campbell does a terrific job reading this one. I listened to the book because people keep comparing it to #TheMarsRoom, but while I command Kerman for her activism regarding prison reform, I have to say that this book is not particularly well-written. #RachelKushner plays in another league! #indiebuddyreads

I'd love all of you to let me know a surprising TV Show or Movie based on a book. Some books don't get attention via books & get it more so via TV/Movies. So much more tv\movie attention that you don't realize it was based on a book at all.

Listened to this audiobook and it was great once Piper got to prison and quit whining. This Is Not The TV Show!! The interactions are largely supportive and empowering. That said, the narrator is great and it was a very interesting look at a Woman‘s minimum security prison.

Wife I listened to the audiobook before attempting to watch the TV series. The book is a definite pick! I bailed on the series after 3 episodes. 🧡🧡🧡 2y
KathyWheeler So it‘s worth getting past the point where Piper does nothing by whine? I hated her so much and thought she was an idiot, so I never finished it. 2y

Narration is wonderful and so far a really interesting listen- I watched most of the first season of this TV show and am not yet to the part where she enters prison so don‘t know how it tracks but I recommend this audiobook so far!

SandyW I had no idea the series was based on a true story. Hubby and I just started netflix and we're bingeing the series. It's great! 2y
Booksnchill @SandyW it is but I cannot vouch yet for how close the TV show is to the actual memoir- I will update along the way! 2y

britt_brooke I read this in print a few years ago and liked it. Then I watched seasons 1 & 2 of the show and it takes a lot of artistic liberties in order to create more drama. Not that that‘s terribly surprising. @Booksnchill @SandyW 2y

#CelBlockTango #melodiousmusicals @CrowCAH I read this book before the Netflix series...not as eye opening as the show, but still a crazy read and wild story. A cautionary tale of naivety, bad decisions, dumb (bad )luck and misplaced trust. I really feel for the inmates...the penal system is DEEPLY flawed 😞
