I need to start Guards! Guards! in the next few days, so I‘d better circle back and review a couple previous #OokBOokClub reads!
With the Post Office well in hand, Moist Von Lipwig now takes charge of the Royal Mint and the bank—naturally. New over-the-top characters are introduced here, but Pratchett manages to handle them deftly enough that it (mostly) felt like just the right amount of outlandish and ridiculous. I really enjoyed this ⤵️

1. When I‘m in the U.S., rarely. But I do when I‘m abroad.
2. Pratchett explores wealth and socioeconomic disparities in Discworld. The Lavish family in "Making Money" represents "old money," demonstrating how entrenched power and control can stifle innovation and lead to abuses

I liked this Discworld installment featuring Moist von Lipwig, though not as much as I liked Going Postal, in which he was introduced. I loved the introduction of canine Mr.Fusspot as chairman of the bank! As usual, Pratchett's satirical observations of the world are spot on.

“The dark organ music filled the Department of Postmortem Communications. Moist assumed it was all part of the ambience, although the mood would have been more precisely obtained if the tune it was playing did not appear to be ‘Cantata and Fugue for Someone Who Has Trouble with the Pedals.‘ As the last note died, after a long illness, Dr. Hicks spun around on the stool and raised the mask.”

“He‘d always wondered what dishabille looked like, but he'd never expected to see so much of it in one go. Even now, some of his memory cells were still trying to die.”

When your semi reformed conman starts to get bored, it‘s time to shake up his enrichment program. Vetinari‘s choice? Put Moist in charge of the bank & the royal mint.
The Moist books never fail to make me smile. A fascinating examination of how humanity assigns value, a scathing indictment of old money & “that‘s how it‘s done.” I do feel I was more aware & critical of the language used to describe the Lavishes. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Norovirus is rife in our part of the UK and I feel rubbish today with nausea 😬
So will be reading this and looking at my smallest cat who has stolen the large dog bed.

This is definitely one of those cases in the Discworld series where reading at least one other book in publishing order helps. The first half is a lot more fun when you've read Going Postal, and can view it as the continued adventures of Moist von Lipwig, who I would never characterize as 'up to his usual tricks' because he's far too unpredictable, as are the things that happen to him and those around him. 1/2

Classic Pratchett: a paragraph of casually related bold-faced social critique ending with a brain-scratching-ly good turn of phrase. 👌🏻🤌🏻

Finished reading. Not the best Discworld book but okay. I think a lot of it went over my head. Preferred Going Postal much better.

Things you should know:
1) It's centrally about financial systems and STILL AWESOME.
2) Readers will benefit greatly from reading Going Postal first.
3) Golems sparking discussions about the arbitrary nature of gender: not to be assumed, up to the individual, to be respected 👌🏻
4) 🤡

Do you prefer 'squirmed' or 'squam'? 😄
A new (made up 🤨) past tense verb form!

It took me awhile to get to this one #OokBOokClub #PratchettPosse, but I‘m certainly glad I finally did. I love Moist, Dearheart, the Golems, and naughty naughty Chairman Fusspot. The Discworld books truly get better and better the more he wrote…. I‘m sad to know that I‘m quickly reaching the end of editions that will be first time reads for me.

Truly, I think these first two Moist books are unimpeachable! Love how thematically on point this book is, every piece feeding into the idea of accepting all of yourself. Bent is my favorite Disc subplot. It is a little bittersweet to see the set up plans and be pretty sure that Raising Steam doesn't touch on that stuff (though I have only read it once, when it came out).

"But mostly, he wanted tomorrow to be different from today."
You revolution, you hurricane

I am noticing, on this reread, that the thing about Mr. Bent is really well sign-posted. Maybe I was foolish to think he was a vampire?

This structure/overall plot of this book is fascinating because it's just Going Postal again with the details changed, and Moist has to learn the same thing about himself but with a different emphasis: Postal it was "he is a Good Person" and here it's "HE is a good person."

What‘s more dangerous than a sort-of-reformed con artist? A bored kind-of-reformed con artist. And so Moist con Lipwig is drafted into overhauling the Ankh-Morpork Mint. Throw in a hairy Bank Manager & an arithomanic assistant, & things might just get complicated for the Postmaster General.
Totally worthy sequel, made me LOL with the biting wit that Pratchett is known for. I thought I had predicted something & got totally surprised! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
Rubbing my hands together in glee as I remember one of the side plots/character arcs being my favorite in all of Discworld
#OokBOokClub

Another grand adventure for Moist Von Lipwig, as he overhauls Ankh-Morpork‘s banking system. Is there anything this former criminal can‘t do?
I loved that once again Moist found a way to wear a shiny gold suit and hat, and I enjoy watching his relationship with Adora Bell develop.
Again I‘m mourning that there are only 3 more books in my series reread! 😢

"Practically everything. You, for example. Gold is #heavy. Your weight in gold is not very much gold at all. Aren't you worth more than that?”

Nice audio book for summer day walks! 🌞 I enjoyed this. I realized that I had missed Pratchett's style of writing. Moist Von Lipwig is such a good character!

Started listening to something a bit easier. I read Going postal years and years ago. Terry Pratchett has never been a favourite of mine but I really liked Going postal! I've had Making money on my bookshelf for ages and now decided to try it in audio form. Liking it so far. 😁👍🎧

A small #haul. It‘s been rough waiting 24 hours to open the package 😅. I got a full refund on Making Money because the spine is damaged and they have no stock to send a replacement, so that‘s a bonus.
Moist von Lipwig is made Master of the Ankh-Morpork Mint and introduces the concept of paper money.
But, in fact, there was no power in the world that could keep a bank honest if it didn‘t want to be.

“The smell of banks is always pleasing, don‘t you think?” said Vetinari. “A mix of polish and ink and wealth.”
“And ursery,” said Moist.
“That would be cruelty to bears. You mean usury, I suspect."

"Oh yes, the chairman is a great friend of mine." said Moist.
"He is, is he?"
"He certainly is," said Moist. "Why, only this morning he licked my face!"
Like ten pages into this book and Moist Von Lipwig almost gets caught climbing up the side of HIS OWN POST OFFICE in the dead of night.
Gosh I love these books. I can't believe I hadn't read any Discworld novels before

Book 1/12 for 2020. Self employed and working 12hrs a day with a wife and 2yr old at home. Let's see if I can make 12 this year!
Starting off with a bit of TP. Love his books and this is one of the 2 I have left to read!
Another reread, chosen for being on my kindle during a panic attack

Terry Pratchett‘s industry novels remain my favorites. The protagonists are not heroes, but people with ideas, who work diligently to change industries and cultural customs with words rather than might or magic. Moist‘s deviance is the sort that exposes the shortcomings of others, and his actions show that challenging the status quo can really be for the better. A thoroughly enjoyable re-read.

Moist von Lipwig is back, and this time, Vetinari has put him in charge of the bank.
