We Are Okay
We Are Okay | Nina LaCour
From the award-winning author ofHold Still comes an achingly beautiful novel about grief and the enduring power of friendship. "You go through life thinking there s so much you need. . . . Until you leave with only your phone, your wallet, and a picture of your mother." Marin hasn t spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend Mabel. But even thousands of miles away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy she s tried to outrun. Now, months later, alone in an emptied dorm for winter break, Marin waits. Mabel is coming to visit and Marin will be forced to face everything that s been left unsaid and finally confront the loneliness that has made a home in her heart. An intimate whisper that packs an indelible punch, We Are Okay is Nina LaCour at her finest. This gorgeously crafted and achingly honest portrayal of grief will leave you urgent to reach across any distance to reconnect with the people you love."

#GratefulReads Read in one sitting. @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

I picked this up last night and couldn't get to sleep until I finished. It's a tender, emotional read about a girl trying to pick up the pieces and move on after her world has been shattered.

I wasn't as blown away by this one as others, but my teenage self would have absolutely loved this one. Still a great read about loneliness, friendship and family.

WE ARE OKAY focuses on coming to terms with and moving beyond loss, grief, and loneliness. The relationships/friendships between the characters in this book are complex, but more importantly, healthy and respectful. And the characters' diverse identities aren't "issues"! This is such a wholesome read. The quiet, gentle tone throughout had me feeling like I was holding my breath—it was that stunning. What a wonderful character-driven novel.

This book hurt me in ways I didn't think a book could. I almost stayed up late last night to finish it, but I had to put it down because of how emotional it was making me.
This may be my favorite book I've read this year. 💙

I'm almost finished with Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman, so I decided to take my other books back that I never finished and get some new ones.
My own books have been severely neglected this year.

I've been in such a reading slump this year. It's been a hectic year full of challenges and changes.

“But now there is stillness and drips of candlewax and quiet. There are the ghosts of who we used to be.”
5/5 This book was super short, yet filled with such depth. You can feel the loneliness and sorrow the protagonist, Marin, is dealing with as she copes with loss, both familial and romantic. Nina Lacour has such a talent for writing emotion. I found myself being being transported back to my university days where I felt as loney as Marin.

This YA book burst my heart wide open! I've been saving it for Christmas time because it definitely has that Christmas-y feel to it. It references Jane Eyre & One Hundred Years of Solitude! I LOVE when books reference books The protagonist is a girl working through grief who used to love to read but finds herself unable to anymore. I also love how this book normalizes her romantic relationship with a girl without the SHOCK factor. 💕

New Reads November rolls on over on the podcast with a discussion about a true heartbreaker of a book, Nina LaCour‘s We Are Okay. Main character Marin‘s story is one of love, secrets, and the many ways that you can call someone family. While there‘s nothing groundbreaking here, I thought it was a very heartfelt story w/some important messages about grief and trauma and how everyone processes these things in their own way and on their own time, and you have to let them do that. I wish we got a fuller picture of what happened before Marin went to NY, and I‘m pretty sure a school wouldn‘t let even a legal adult live all alone in the dorm for a month. But still a nice read. 3/5 ⭐️
