Decline and Fall | Evelyn Waugh

With his distinctive dark wit, Evelyn Waugh's Decline and Fall is a masterful social satire sending up the social mores of 1920s England, edited with an introduction by David Bradshaw in Penguin Modern Classics. Expelled from Oxford for indecent behaviour, Paul Pennyfeather is oddly unsurprised to find himself qualifying for the position of schoolmaster at Llanabba Castle. Hi colleagues are an assortment of misfits, including Prendy (plagued by doubts) and captain Grimes, who is always in the soup (or just plain drunk). Then Sports Day arrives, and with it the delectable Margot Beste-Chetwynde, floating on a scented breeze. As the farce unfolds and the young run riot, no one is safe, least of all Paul. Taking its title from Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Evelyn Waugh's first, funniest novel immediately caught the ear of the public with his account of an ingnu abroad in the decadent confusion of 1920s high society. 'The funniest book I have ever read' Julian Symons, The Times 'His first, most perfect novel ... a ruthlessly comic plot' John Mortimer, Guardian 'Concocted of cruelty, bigotry, pederasty, white slavery, violence, madness and murder, Decline and Fall is fundamentally playful and side-splittingly funny' David Bradshaw

I know this was satire, but I don‘t know enough about what the author was trying to say to get all of it. That aside, it was just plain ridiculous in many places and I did have a few laughs. However, it‘s a low pick as it still took me a long time to get through.

I‘m enjoying some quiet with a book and an iced coffee in the hammock this morning. I‘ve barely made any time to read this book this month, so I‘m trying to make a bit of progress.

This book made me chuckle several times. It‘s absurd and ridiculous and I love all the deadpan humor.
It‘s been a long time but I finally checked another #1001 from my list.

“Mr. Sniggs, the Junior Dean, and Mr. Postlethwaite, the Domestic Bursar, sat alone in Mr. Sniggs‘ room overlooking the garden quad at Scone College. From the rooms of Sir Alastair Digby-Vaine-Trumpington, two staircases away, came a confused roaring and breaking of glass.“

This sort of absurdist satire isn't really my thing. However, there were some very funny moments and insightful observations, and Paul Pennyfeather is a likable character.

I'm happy that I can check off another #1001 book and fill in my #1928 slot for the #192025 challenge! @Librarybelle

#GratefulReads - Day Nineteen - #ClassicYouveEnjoyed I laughed out loud at the many and various calamities that befell Paul Pennyfeather. This was my first Evelyn Waugh, but definitely not my last, a firm fan.

I always adore Evelyn Waugh‘s dark, surreal yet perfectly observed satire. This was wild and weird and so, so true about loooots of oxfordy minor public school types I‘ve known even 80 years later. Points lost for racial language, the prose and humour was so modern I forgot it was old in any way until I was shocked by terminology used about black people. That wasn‘t a big part of it, could be avoided by skipping one chapter but I have to mention

Good morning all. 32C in London today (90F) 😨😨😨 I seriously cannot cope with heat so... interesting how I‘m gonna live through a barbecue today! I evolved for drizzly rain not hot days!

Starting the day off with Evelyn Waugh in the bath, I love him so much.

Is it hot where you are team Go Team? @Trashcanman @Megabooks @KathyWheeler @RachelO @TheEllieMo @cobwebmoth @wanderinglynn

TheEllieMo I don‘t think any English person is comfortable in anything higher than 22°C? Hope you enjoy the barbecue! Keep hydrated 5y
rockpools Urgh. Yes! However much I complain about drizzle l, I do it well! Just been out and it‘s a bit mad out there with holiday-makers. Think I‘ll be hiding indoors for the rest of the weekend. Enjoy your barbecue! 5y
Ashley_Nicoletto It‘s so hot here today too. It‘s going to be miserable. 5y

Itchyfeetreader Yet again I have left town on the only warm weekend since the last time I came away - I am in northern Italy we say highs of 39 yesterday but today seems a little cooler or at least breezier 5y
marleed I like your method of staying cool. 90°F in Kansas City, as well. I‘m going to bask in AC all day! 5y
wanderinglynn No heat here in the Pacific Northwest! The high here today is only going to be 71°F/21°C. Come visit! ? 5y
Megabooks 88 here, but I‘ll definitely be walking later. Cool for Kentucky. Enjoy your book n bath!! When I came to England 10 years ago this week there was a heat wave. We had not anticipated it nor packed accordingly. 🥵🥵🥵 Take care!!! 5y
cobwebmoth It's pretty warm here this weekend. I've done my last two walks indoors with stairs to avoid the heat. 5y

The TV adaptation of Brideshead gives a false impression of Waugh. When it comes down to it, I don't like him very much.

batsy That's also how I feel about Waugh. 6y
rwmg Back when it first came on tv the lush gay romanticism was a huge draw, so everything he wrote is bound to be a huge disappointment 6y

So, there was a book sale at the library. They didn‘t have half the selection of the spring sale, but I still found some good ones—and only spent $8!

There‘s a title in there I hadn‘t heard of, Susan Vreeland‘s Luncheon of the Boating Party. Has anyone read it?

Oh, and don‘t worry, the fire is behind glass and I moved the books promptly after taking the photo.

BarbaraJean I haven‘t read Luncheon of the Boating Party, but it‘s on my TBR! I read this one by Vreeland and really enjoyed it (it‘s why I picked up the Luncheon one!) 6y
MaureenMc Luncheon of the Boating Party was a DNF for me. But if I recall correctly, I was in a “I have a new baby” fog, & it was difficult for me to concentrate on anything. 6y
MamaGina I‘ve read it and I enjoyed it; I‘m an art nerd and enjoy fiction that focuses on works of art and/or famous artists. 🎨 🖼 💚 6y

saresmoore @MaureenMc Well, I only paid 50 cents for it, so I won‘t stress if I don‘t like it. And I remember that fog well. I read some weird books during those times! 6y
saresmoore @MamaGina @BarbaraJean Good to hear! It seemed like a fun, but maybe not-too-intellectual foray into the art world. 6y

Leftcoastzen Wow nice ! How funny I got the same Hardy at my local Library sale yesterday! 6y
LauraBeth That Woolf Bio! 😍😍 6y
saresmoore @Leftcoastzen Great minds, eh? 😊 6y
saresmoore @merelybookish My husband was shocked and ended up just donating the rest of the cash he had brought. 6y
saresmoore @LauraBeth I know, right? I‘ve no idea if it‘s a good bio, but it sure looks nice. 6y
LauraBeth Bell‘s mom was Woolf‘s sister - so I‘m sure he had some great access! 6y
Leftcoastzen Yeah great minds ! I can vouch for the Woolf book , love it , part of the permanent collection 6y
emilyhaldi Fabulous haul!!! 6y
batsy Oh wow, great books! I'm eyeing that Woolf bio, too 😍 And so curious about the Eliot book! 6y
saresmoore @emilyhaldi I love the library book sales in this city! 6y
saresmoore @batsy This book is apparently a compilation of Eliot‘s extra work that isn‘t widely published—sounds to be pretty interesting. I still want to get my hands on a biography, though! 6y
LeahBergen Oooooo! The Hardy bio looks good! And I‘ve always meant to read that bio of Woolf by her nephew. I have The Real Jane Austen waiting on my shelves. Nice haul! 😍😍 6y

We're in the middle of watching "Decline and Fall." It's entertaining alright. It's one of the few of his books I don't have a copy of. Here's a pretty old Dell copy of "Vile Bodies." It says "in his first American soft-cover publication" on the back.

3/5 stars. If I hadn't had to read this for college, I doubt I would have picked it up. It's a book that's very much of its time and is something I can appreciate as an English Lit student.

This book is strange. I'm unsure if it is the uniquely British humor and lingo that is confusing, or something else. The book is funny in certain parts, but the rest (so far) seems slightly discrete and disconnected. On the plus side, I did get to go to Von's at Purdue and pick this and some others out! #unsure #britlit #shrug

I read this as I heard the BBC is making it into a Television mini series. Pretty funny In that dry, British wit kind of way and I hope the TV series brings out the comedy. WARNING: includes some deeply racist language reflective of the time it was written.
