Have YOU read this book yet?

If you have, how about that ending? Were you puzzled?

The book focused on the lives of the two main characters, Rose and Odalie, with Odalie being “the other typist.”

The author was exploring relationships and human interaction....something we all have in our lives and need to deal with.

The ending is incredible and will have you re-thinking all that happened.

3.5 ⭐️

The story is well written and I didn't mind the slow build at all. However, considering how many little hints were dropped throughout the book, I would have preferred a clearer ending. The theories are numerous and confusing. I just wish I knew what actually happened... I can‘t believe Round 11 of #LMPBC has come to and end!!

This book has been on my TBR since it was published in 2013. At the time, it got a lot of positive buzz from several bloggers that I follow. Since then, I've read one of Rindell's later books (this one was her debut), Eagle & Crane, and loved it. All that to say, I was anticipating something a little creepy & intriguing, but ended up honestly being bored most of the time. Hardly anything happens for long swaths of book, other than the narrator ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) constantly telling us that she's unreliable & giving us a LOT of incredibly heavy-handed foreshadowing about where she ends up, meaning that there honestly weren't a lot of surprises. The ending answered zero questions, which in this case just kind of felt like lazy writing instead of intriguing. I frequently read a fiction & nonfiction book at the same time to help myself get through the NF, but in this case I was way more engaged ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) in my NF read & found myself sighing every time I picked this one up, wondering what in the world Rose was going to go on and on about this time. It wasn't a horrible read, but if this had been the first Rindell I read, I would never have bothered to pick up another. In Eagle & Crane she doesn't try nearly as hard to be mysterious & it works so much better. 3y
Ruthiella Yes, yes and yes. This book got so much buzz but I pretty much disliked it for all the reasons you list. And the end...was dumb. 3y
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - I just wasn't ever surprised about a single thing that happened in this book - mainly because all the “foreshadowing“ was basically the narrator telling us what was going to happen!? But I loved Eagle & Crane, so maybe Rindell was just still trying to find her footing in this one haha 3y
SilversReviews This is a FAVORITE even though I never could figure it out. If you can figure it out, please let me know. Are Rose and Odalie the same person? Is Odalie telling this whole story from the insane asylum? (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @SilversReviews - haha yes, so many people loved this one despite - maybe because of? - its ambiguity, but I like answers in my books!! 😂 I feel like Rose & Odalie can't be the same person because people have seen both of them at the same/same place, but which one of them is the girl from the car wreck? Has Odalie set Rose up for the fall? Or did Rose's past actually catch up with her? 3y
SilversReviews @TheAromaofBooks Those are the questions I had too. I think she set her up. Didn‘t Odalie kill that guy and then run away? It was so good, but like you, I like answers. My book club read it and had the same questions. How about how Odalie threw him off the balcony and set up Rose for it…she was tricky since she had her wear those bracelets. Or did Rose throw him off? I wish I knew. 😊 Thanks for your reply. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @SilversReview - I think this would be a fun book to read with a book club since there are a lot of ??? moments to discuss!! 3y

I‘ll be honest here: I have no idea what I just read, but it‘s a pick anyway because I loved the writing, the time period, and the characters. I am excited to keep our group going. We should pick a new name.
Here's a mish mosh of books for my pick. Anything strike your fancy?
#LMPBC @Avanders @BethM @Bklover @TK421

See All 12 Comments
TK421 I'm always up for Jasper Fforde. 5y
BethM I agree new name, new rotation! Woot! Also, In Dec we send back the last book. So do we want to use Dec to read our books and Jan to mail or Jan to read our books and Feb to mail- giving us a month off? Picking a new theme each rotation or just going with our voluminous TBR piles? 🤣 5y
Avanders Lol I love the excitement 😁😁 Ok you‘ve twisted my arm (not much twisting necessary 😜)... I‘m in for another round! I‘ll have to bounce after that bc the move is gonna get crazy (lots of components) but I think the time works for 1 more! As for theme.. I was cool w a ghostish/gothic historical fiction theme... or just whatever we fancy in our tbrs. I‘ll go what you all decide! As for a name.. I‘m coming up w nothing but #fabfive and... 👇🏽👇🏽 5y
Avanders (Continued from 👆🏽👆🏽) Well i know it‘s not particularly creative. 😆 Okay that‘s enough rambling for now! @MaleficentBookDragon @bklover @bethm @tk421 5y
Avanders As for these 5 choices, they all sound interesting! I‘d be most inclined toward This House is Haunted or the String Diaries, and I have already ready The Eyre Affair... but I‘m down w whatever 😁 5y
BethM @Avanders are you moving back home to WI🤞 5y
Avanders @BethM oh man I wish!! 🙇🏽‍♀️ No we‘re just moving to another house in ABQ ... something to incorporate mothers-in-law... 😬 5y
BethM I agree with @Avanders those two plus Eyre Affair would be my inclination. But let‘s steer away from that if she‘s already read it. 5y

Pick - mostly

I liked the story, but it was a long climb for a short slide. I have a soft spot for an unreliable narrator, and it‘s a book with an ambiguous ending that makes you think. 👍

This is the best book I‘ve read this year. Surprised it wasn‘t on my radar when it came out in 2013. Told from the viewpoint of a grown orphan desperate to have a “bosom buddy,” the narrator‘s inability to tell the story from beginning without letting hints of the future slip in gives this tale a certain mystique. Every character is lovable even when s/he might not be likable. Perfect start to my St Pat‘s Day!

These are the two books that came to mind for #9to5. Rose and Katey are separated by a decade, but they both work secretarial jobs. Something about this setting a hundred years ago really works for me. Now, being a legal assistant in 2018, I realize there nothing interesting or sexy about the job. 🤣🤣🤣 #fiercefeb

This book! I really, really enjoyed the armchair travel and distraction it provided, but I was really confused about the ending. It didn't make any sense at all. I can see how this would make a great book club read for this very reason. I like my endings for the most part, neat and tidy. No loose ends. So I'm giving this 3.5 stars for the glitz, glamor and opulence. 🍸🍸🍸

Wasn't crazy about the pace of the story, slow with too much foreshadowing of main character's own downfall. There is a lot of build up to certain scenes and plot lines that go nowhere. Give it a go it you prefer your unreliable narrator to obviously be so from page one.
