Lair of Dreams: The Diviners Book 2
Lair of Dreams: The Diviners Book 2 | Libba Bray
THE NEW YORK TIMES #1 BESTSELLER 1920s New York. America's Sweetheart Seer. Diviners dream-walk. Follow them down. After a supernatural showdown with a serial killer, Evie O'Neill has outed herself as a Diviner. With her uncanny ability to read people's secrets, she's become a media darling, and everyone's in love with the city's newest It Girl. Everyone, that is, except the other Diviners, such as piano-playing Henry DuBois and Chinatown resident Ling Chan, both struggling to keep their powers a secret - for they can walk in dreams. While Evie lives the high life, victims of a mysterious sleeping sickness start turning up across New York City. As Henry searches for lost love, and Ling strives to succeed in a world that shuns her, a malevolent force infects their dreams. And at the edges of it all lurks a man in a stovepipe hat, who has plans that extend farther than anyone can guess. As the sickness spreads, can the Diviners descend into the dreamworld to save the city? In this heart-stopping sequel to The Diviners, New York Times bestselling and Printz Award winning author Libba Bray takes readers deeper into the mystical underbelly of New York City. 'The ambitiously broad focus of this novel strikes just the right balance.Weaving together a chilling mystery with a truly elusive solution, several poignant love stories, agonising injustice, terrifyingly monstrous dreams, and even a cameo by legendary psychiatrist Carl Jung, this instalment wraps enough up to satisfy but clearly sets the stage for more.' Loving this series. I'm not sure why I waited so long to read it. The atmosphere and setting of 1920s New York is perfect.

I typically don't read series, but I absolutely LOVED The Diviners series by Libba Bray. This was book two, and even though I liked book one and three better, this was still the best of June.

Though I will always like the first book better, I also love everything about this book. The first time I read it, the new character introduced was my least favorite, but I liked her a lot more upon re-reading.

I just finished book 2 in The Diviners series. Almost as good as the first. I really like the narrator, so it's likely I'll listen to book 3. I like that you can search the library database by narrator.

I collect sentences for my students to study and emulate. I will use this one with my student writers next year. The idea is to craft an original sentence using the structure of the model. I usually write one as an example, but haven't done that yet. Anyone want to take a stab at it?

3.5 stars-this one took me forever to finish but I finally did and I enjoyed it. I don't care much for the narrator but the books are soo long. This was creepy AF. I did like the characters. It was a bit predictable in some aspects but in some parts, I didn't see coming.

This is my 2nd time reading and I love the whole cast BUT I constantly find myself skimming along until I come across the part of the story with Sam and Evie. They're my favorite characters in the whole series and I definitely have a thing for snarky city boys *swoon*

I wasn‘t as taken with this one as I was the first. The main character, Evie, who showed growth at the end of the first book seems to have regressed and thinks about nothing but partying and drinking. Most of the book is devoted to new characters, leaving the old ones to languish in the background. Still a great premise and the audiobook is entertaining and well-done, so I still plan to read the third in the series.

Finished this chunkster and let me tell ya, it is so much better as an audiobook. A fantastic story full of characters and details that bogged me down when I was reading but really was able to engage while listening. Probably helped that January LaVoy is amazing in all the different voices. Will definitely listen to the rest of the series.

It's been years since I read the first one, so it took awhile to get back into the story and some Google searches to remember who all the characters were. I enjoyed so much about it, but there are just so many storylines going on that none of them felt well developed. I'm playing the long game with this one and hoping the story arcs across all the books are more satisfying than the first 2. February #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

It had been a while since I read The Diviners so it took time to get back up to speed, but once I did this sequel was quite a ride: several interlinking subplots come together in the end while leaving plenty of plot for the next book. This book boasts a large cast of likable, interesting characters and a compelling Big Bad. This was the last book in my dollar store haul--I may have found it by chance but I will be on the lookout for the next one!

This was a tough decision since I have no issues with the writing itself, in fact there are some beautifully haunting parts. But half way through, and I just don‘t care about what happens. I may give this series another try as an audio, but for now, it‘s a pass.

In other news, a pretty sad showing for my #bookspinbingo Another reason for throwing in the towel.

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes a book just isn't working and you gotta let it go!! I'm planning to do bingo again for August, so there's always another chance! I'm not getting a bingo in July either 😂 4y
rjsthumbelina I listened to it on audio and loved it, so I'd say that's a good bet! The series is narrated by January LaVoy, who's one of my favorite audiobook readers/actors 4y

Lots of cool shadows on my morning #audiowalk with Casey.

I‘ve now got less than an hour left in my LAIR OF DREAMS reread, but I feel very much like I picked up a cold somehow. Damn. I might not manage to do enough active stuff to let me finish the book today. Or whatever order those words should‘ve gone in.

I went a little heavier on the chili paste with tonight‘s fish curry—and man, is it ever good. I‘ve missed this dish. One of my pandemic bright spots is how the infrequent grocery runs gave me an excuse to buy a giant bag of frozen basa.

My #audiocooking got me through a decent stretch of LAIR OF DREAMS; another thing I‘ve missed. Y‘all know “queer asshole does dream magic while ghosts lurk around” is my uber-specific subgenre of choice.

This would have been 4 stars, if not for a love triangle. Y‘all know how I feel about love triangles. That said, I loved getting to know sweet, kind Henry. Evie‘s antics were charming & hilarious, which I enjoyed. The plot meandered around between characters a lot, & it wasn‘t as chilling or exciting as the first. Still, I really want to see where the next one takes us! ...As long as it doesn‘t take us through any more love triangles 🙄. ★★★☆☆.

The characters in this series, set in NYC during Prohibition, are very lovable and Bray has a real gift with dialogue. I‘m switching back and forth between print and audio. The narration is superb. On to the third in the series.

If you haven‘t read this series yet I definitely recommend listening to it on audible. January LaVoy is the best narrator I‘ve ever listened to in my entire life! Also, the story itself is just so good. It‘s so creepy and so funny all at the same time. Also my ship keeps sinking and then floats a little and sinks again. Makin me sad. But I still love it!

With each book I read in this series...I get angrier and angrier about the cover changes.

I love this cast. Period. They're diverse, all having steadily growing individual stories, and a great overarching story together. I am very VERY curious to see where all the romances from this book go cause like...BOY

Also, the very last scene made me shriek scream. I need to read book 3 ASAP.
