Patient Zero
Patient Zero: A Joe Ledger Novel | Jonathan Maberry
23 posts | 43 read | 48 to read
When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there's either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills... and there's nothing wrong with Joe Ledger's skills. And that's both a good, and a bad thing. It's good because he's a Baltimore detective that has just been secretly recruited by the government to lead a new taskforce created to deal with the problems that Homeland Security can't handle. This rapid response group is called the Department of Military Sciences or the DMS for short. It's bad because his first mission is to help stop a group of terrorists from releasing a dreadful bio-weapon that can turn ordinary people into zombies. The fate of the world hangs in the balance....

This book infuriated me. Even Haunting Adaline infuriated me less than this book did. Oh my god the main character Joe Ledger. Smartest man and the most wiseass couldn‘t figure out the simple hand fed clue when it was in his face three times. Oh and don‘t get me started on the villain Gault. I hated this book with a passion and I‘m still fuming over just how incompetent the hero and the villain are.

This was a hard book to rate because of its over simplification of good guys versus bad guys. Ray Porter, the audio book narrator, really made the book for me. I liked that it was action-packed, and if you're into covert ops and law enforcement you will probably like it--it is more of that than horror. I do want to know where the author goes with the series.

4th book read for the #NovelNovember #Readathon

The premise is super interesting (zombies developed as weapons of terror) but the execution left me a little cold. I think a little more suspense and less spelling out of the plot would have helped. #Scarathlon #TeamHarkness @StayCurious

I finished this one, but I found it pretty painful. It‘s hard to feel sympathetic for characters that are all completely unlikeable. I will not be continuing this series. #scarathlon #teamStoker 3 points

I actually ended up liking this way more than expected. I love zombie books but for some reason this one never seemed like my style. I really enjoyed the main character's POV and thought the pacing of the plot was perfect. Some of the parts with the bad guys felt a little too stereotypical, almost like a caricature of middle eastern people. I know that they were terrorists, but it still felt off. Also, Ray Porter is one of my favorite narrators.

I really liked this book, especially the protagonist. He‘s pretty sassy! It‘s also yet another interesting and plausible version of the virus story. Highly recommended for zombie fans! I‘m excited to read the next in the series!

Karkar I found I like most of this authors books! I will have to check this one out. I was hesitant because of all the zombie 🧟‍♂️ books out there. 6y
Bookzombie If you enjoy audiobooks, this series is excellent. The narrator, Ray Porter, nails the characters. 🙂 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Bookzombie I actually did listen to it and really enjoyed it. I‘ve listened to several books read by Ray Porter and he is an excellent narrator. I‘m going to go ahead and add the second book to my Audible account! 6y

Today‘s #agameoffavorites is award winners. I am a huge Jonathan Maberry fan, particularly his Joe Ledger series. He has won multiple Bram Stoker awards for Patient Zero, the first Joe Ledger Novel, his YA series Rot & Ruin and his Pine Deep series. He also has been place in be USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame as a writer.

One of his favorite novels is also a favorite of mine, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

MStew Great post!🤘 6y
tonyahoswalt I really like the Rot & Ruin series. Eventually I'll read the Joe Ledger series. 6y
Guildedearlobe @tonyahoswalt I‘m not sure if your an Audiobook fan but those books are great in Audio. Perfect narrator. If not, they still rock and it‘s one of my favorite continuing series. 6y
tonyahoswalt @Guildedearlobe I have recently started listening to audiobooks again. Might check them out. Random tidbit, I read the Rot & Ruin books to my husband. I was his narrator, lol. 6y

#monstermadness2017 So I can't remember if it's the first or second book in the Joe Ledger series (maybe even a different one) with a mad scientist who experiments on himself. I'm pretty sure there are mad scientists in both of these. #fly

Read 9 books,1 graphic novel, listen to 2 audibles and I'm finishing up a book today. I had a lot of fun picking out what books to read this month! It was a good month only a few books I didn't like. #booktober. #Halloweenreads.

This is my all-time favorite zombie novel for an #AllHallowsRead rec. It's rare to find a biological science fiction book that I mostly agree with the science. Yes, it can be a bit testosterone pumped - if you don't like the word "hooyah" best not read the series. But I think that's easily ignored if you like biological warfare books.

MMenefee This is a great read! 8y
Bookzombie I agree. Great pick! 8y
Suetara His Rot & Ruin series is wonderful, too. 8y

If you want to insert a fun BANG! into your TBR schedule, this book is it! An elite covert special-ops group goes up against a zombie-making-bioweapon-wielding terrorist group. Badass Joe Ledger leads his group into all kinds of mayhem, including fighting "28 Days Later"-like zombies in Philly's Independence Hall. Just awesome! 1st in a series. #PairWith: boilermaker: 2/3 glass of Marstons Pedigree beer, shot glass of Jack Daniels, #chuggilicious!

Dogearedcopy The audio (narrated by Ray Porter) is amazing too! Ray *is* Joe Ledger! 8y
Jennifermeaton I'm not big on zombies, but this sounds like fun. 8y
LauraBeth I'm with you @Jennifermeaton - whenever I see the word zombie, my interest wanes - to the point that I actually had to ask my hubby the other day: "explain zombies again to me..." but I'm game to try and read something like this - @MrBook makes it sound interesting 8y

Laura317 Chuggalicious! 😂 Seriously, sounds entertaining. Might get in audio. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan My zombie kick has waned a bit but honestly I see all the stories as possibly happening. Why? We live in a world where it's very easy to get from point A to point B before an infectious disease can be determined. Think what the Spanish Flu from the early 1900s would do today. You can argue better medicine but that's not globally true. Constant vigilance! I might also like conspiracies. Or no sleep. I'll have to read this one got research purposes. 8y
GinaAnderson @LauraBeth I'm the same. As soon as I read the work "zombies" my brain disengaged. 8y
Hooked_on_books Wow, disturbing cover! 8y
MrBook @Dogearedcopy Ooh, I'll have to check it out on Audible, thank you 😁👏🏻👍🏻! @Jennifermeaton @LauraBeth @jpmcwisemorgan @GinaAnderson I understand your antipathy to the zombie topic. Believe me, I enjoyed it for awhile until I realized everyone was just repeating the same story with different characters in different places. In the past few years though, there have been trend-buckers here & there. This book qualifies as one of those for me. 8y
MrBook @Hooked_on_books It's definitely interesting 😊. 8y
Christy2318 My son loved this series along with Maberry's Rot & Ruin YA series which has some character overlap. 8y
Jennifermeaton And there's an audio book? Hmmmmn maybe I'll check it out on audiobook then. Stacking it! ☺️ 8y
Jennifermeaton Oh! I just saw that this is by Johnathan Mayberry I know him! Ha! But he also writes some horrifying stuff. 8y

Bookzombie I enjoy Joe Ledger and love Jonathan Maberry. JM writes really good zombie books. I loved his YA Rot and Ruin series. Also Dead of Night, and Fall of Night. While this Joe Ledger has zombies, the other books have different situations that Joe and his team have to overcome. 😀 8y
