Fire and Thorns
Fire and Thorns | Rae Carson
Princess Elisa is a disappointment to her people. Although she bears the Godstone in her navel, a sign that she has been chosen for an act of heroism, they see her as lazy and useless and fat. On her sixteenth birthday, she is bartered off in royal marriage and shipped away to a kingdom in turmoil, where her much-older-and extremely beautiful-husband refuses to acknowledge her as his wife. Devastated, Elisa decides to take charge of her fate and learn what it means to bear the Godstone. As an invading army threatens to destroy her new home, and everyone at court manoeuvres to take advantage of the young princess, Elisa becomes convinced that, not only is her own life in danger, the whole world needs saving. But how can a young girl who has never ridden horseback, never played the game of politics, and never attained the love of a man save the world? Elisa can't be sure, but she must try to uncover the Godstone's secret history before the enemy steals the destiny nestled in her core.

Loki seemed like a perfect addition to the photo. I did not love the first part of this book- a LOT of body shaming- but then there was a plot twist and the story took off and became fast paced, engaging and a loved the characters. sort of like when The Wizard of Oz movie goes from black and white to color.
will be mailed tomorrow

Not going to say too much about this one since it‘s an #LMPBC read.

The fantasy was interesting, but too much god talk for me. The MC was very whiny in the beginning, but she is supposed to be. It‘s better when she starts growing. It‘s a quick read, even though it‘s a bit long.

You can see my other thoughts on goodreads.

Having reread it for book club, I love the book equally as much as I did the first time. Elisa is growth to her true self was awesome. Not only did she find her purpose but a band of people who accepted her with open arms.

A girl w/a lot of responsibilities and power, magic, danger, and far off places...this book is all that and a bag of chips! I remember first reading this, I'd gone and picked it up and the other 2 in the series on a wim and sat in the library...well 2 hrs later and a call from my fiancee later I'd fallen in love! So awesome, honestly give it a try!

Fast, fun read. I thought it would be 4 stars until literally the last two pages & then just didn‘t like the wrap up at all. BUT. It‘s super fast paced, has magic & romance & drama so I‘ll definitely be reading the next two books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wasn‘t really a fan of this book. It wasn‘t the worst book I‘ve ever read, but it wasn‘t great. It‘s one of the only books I‘ve ever DNFed. It tries to get away with saying it has diverse characters because the main character is fat, but that is literally her only character trait. I could go on forever about the problems I had with this, but I‘ll just leave it as I recommend skipping it.

The book didn‘t grab me in the beginning and I was a little grossed out by picturing something in someone‘s belly button. I can‘t say that totally went away but it is such a GREAT book, lots of action, character development and not dependent on happily ever after. I stayed up to 5 am finishing it.

I liked this book but i wasn't expecting it!

I like to try and always push myself to try and make myself a better person and people who dont do this annoy me.

The main character starts out fat and lazy with no drive to try and change. As the book goes on she finds herself changing into a better person, not because she used will power to get off her butt but just doing what needed to be done as the situation needed

4 out of 5 😀

This was ...different. Not in a bad way, but definitely different. I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters (❤Humberto & Hector) but found it a little too.....spiritual for my tastes. I also found some of the writing lacked a bit. I did have a few "yell at the book moments" though so.....there must have been something to keep my attention ?

This was my second time reading this book, and I loved it even more than the first. The idea of the Godstone Elisa has is so unlike anything I‘ve ever read before. I still haven‘t read the novellas in this series, which I think are going to be next on my list!

Didn't realize going in that this story had a religious base. There were things that surprised me and things that disappointed me. The ending had enough finality to it that I don't feel the need to continue with the series at this time.

So I read it a while ago but I want to mention it because I think that not enough people know about it or talk about it. It's slow at the begging but than you just can't stop reading . The story is unique, and the character development in this book is the best I have ever read. So I highly recommend this one .

#Booktober #BestCharacterName This was hard to pick, so I have three. Elisa-Lucero (Fire and Thorns) always sounded good to me, it's nice to find hispanic names in English Books. I always thought that Liesel was a really pretty name, and it's one of my favorite characters. And at last, Marianne from Sense and Sensibility, just because it's quite similar to my own name haha.

Elisa is a female character that every woman can relate too. Elisa struggles with confidence issues& struggles to take charge of her life. I really like that Elisa has flaws becuase I think that makes her seem more human. When the book first starts off Elisa is a spoiled pamper princess, who all of a sudden must learn very quickly how to become a learder. As the book goes on Elisa slowly changes and becomes stronger.I highly recommend this book.

I thought I would really like this but 85 pages in, I just don't care what happens or why she has a godstone or what the godstone does. So back to the library and on to the next book!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hate it when that happens, but better to bail now and move on to something else. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Agree with @Riveted_Reader_Melissa , unless someone tells me specifically that it is worth it once you get to "this" point in the book, I always end up being mad at myself for wasting my time. 8y

Enjoyed a lot, but I listened to the audiobook and would have enjoyed it more if I'd been able to see the words. I like the tactile feel of seeing the names. (Also, I found the weight-loss sort of ... borderline ok, but not handled well.)

Got this as a library e-book, and loving it. Interesting Spanish-flavored fantasy world (the countries are Valle de Oro, Joya de Arena, and Invierne), and a heroine with lots of guts and also lots of growth and evolution.

katelynd I loved the Spanish flavor of that world too! So many of the names & places were so beautiful and the growth of the MC is just so incredibly different than everything else I've read in this genre. 8y
