An English professor struggling for tenure discovers that her ex-fianc has just become the president of her collegeand her new bossin this whip-smart modern retelling of Jane Austens classic Persuasion. Anne Corey is about to get schooled. An English professor in California, shes determined to score a position on the coveted tenure track at her college. All shes got to do is get a book deal, snag a promotion, and boom! Shes in. But then Adam Martinezher first love and ex-fiancshows up as the colleges new president. Anne should be able to keep herself distracted. After all, shes got a book to write, an aging father to take care of, and a new romance developing with the colleges insanely hot writer-in-residence. But no matter where she turns, theres Adam, as smart and sexy as ever. As the school year advances and her long-buried feelings begin to resurface, Anne begins to wonder whether she just might get a second chance at love. Funny, smart, and full of heart, this modern ode to Jane Austens classic explores what happens when we run into the demons of our past...and when they turn out not to be so bad, after all.

Entertaining if you like books, authors, writing, college and libraries (who doesn‘t?!?); however I found it a tad predictable.

The author has described this book as, "a love letter to books and a love letter to book lovers" and I believe that comes through clear as day! This modern take on Persuasion, about a literature professor reconnecting with an old love, has so many pitch-perfect moments that I felt really connected to as a life-long reader. And with multiple, wonderful scenes set in libraries? What more could we ask for?! #PemberLittens

Very fun, very quick read!! Read some "so-so" reviews about the predictability of the book being a negative, bit in a time where little is predictable (aside from there being bad news), this was a welcome comfort. The writing is good, the characters are endearing. If you're looking for some literary candy, read this one!!

Ok, the ending raised it from a so-so to a pick for me! The pacing overall was great, but it initially bothered me how there were so many judgy (sp?) descriptions of how women look. And I can‘t blame it on misogyny: the author and main character are women. But that lessened in time and overall I think book lovers will enjoy this story about books, teaching, writing, libraries, etc. Especially if you have 3 fuzzy reading companions!

AutumnRLS Kitties are so cute. I love reading with my little dog. It makes everything so cozy ❤ And women can unknowingly contribute to patriarchy and misogyny. It is simply a system that values men over women. It encourages women to compete with eachother under the fallacy that there are limited seats for woman at the table. 3y
LiteraryinLawrence @AutumnRLS You‘re so right, that‘s a great point. 3y

I was very disappointed in this book. I felt that the story was lackluster and could have used more development. The characters were stagnant. I was unimpressed by the writing style.
There is one scene that stands out to me, where the main character is caring for her ailing father. That scene could have been written so much more tenderly. As someone who has gone through those same emotions and actions, I felt this scene was a gross imitation.

I was looking for something light and fun to read today and “By the Book” really hit the spot. This charming adaptation of Jane Austen‘s “Persuasion” takes place on a college campus-where the literature professor struggling for tenure discovers the new university President is the man whose heart she broke years before. It was really great living in this book for a few hours. And now I DESPERATELY want to reread “Persuasion.” 💜

My random streak of reading retellings ends tonight with “By the Book.” It‘s a surprisingly sweet adaptation of “Persuasion” about a professor struggling for tenure who discovers her ex-fiancée has just become the president of her college. It‘s a fun, airy book with some hilarious moments, and it‘s a perfect pick-me up on this slow Thursday.

I‘ve run out of retellings and am desperately seeking recs!!!

#2019Book18
As a college English instructor, I related to most of this book, which I quite enjoyed. However, I‘ve come to learn that if a female protagonist cited anything by Austen or the Brontes as her favorite novel, then the rest of the book will basically play out like a modern version of her favorite novel. And that makes things just a little too predictable.

JennyM I really like the cover. It looks a comfy read 5y

I really wanted to like this but I just couldn't. Taking on a retelling of anything Austen is tough and unfortunately in this book the characters and love story fell flat. The whole thing was just underwhelming. I appreciate the effort but it just wasn't for me 😞

A cute modern romance which I finished in less than 2 days (which is quick for me). I have to admit some frustration with the main female character's decisions/behavior. Since this is a common complaint of mine I think it is more a reflection on me than the books I read.

A cute modern retelling of Jane Austin‘s Persuasion. It was a breezy and fast read. I was a little disappointed in the romantic element as I never felt the longing or tension between the romantic pair. It ended suddenly with everything resolved happily.

Cute, bookish, university story based on Austen‘s Persuasion. Fun, light read, but missing some major depth in the characters, especially in the love interests.

Honestly, what I liked the most were the discussion questions and book club suggestions in the back - deep, thoughtful, and stretching!

Dr. Anne Corey, is a professor of classic literature at Fairfax College in California, when *SURPRISE* 10 years after their breakup she hears that the college's new president is her ex-fiancé. The tension of will-they/won't-they is prevalent as they date other people but keep end up in situations alone together. The title comes from an ultimatum from the department head: she must get a book contract in the next 3 months or forfeit her position.

Did you know that those hilarious "By the Book" podcast co-hosts are also authors?
Comedienne Jolenta jovially reveals in her book how the Real Housewives often mimic classic characters in Greek mythology while producer/skeptic Kristen shares a delightful tale about an Amish teenager struggling between her family obligations and a deep desire for reckless romance. I hope they both write sequels. I want to read more! ???

Yesterday, I mentioned I was rereading Jane Austen‘s “Persuasion,” mostly to remind myself how much I love it. Today, I‘m reading its contemporary retelling, about an English professor who learns that her college‘s new president is her ex-fiancé. This book is totally charming, surprisingly funny (her best friend‘s pep talks are THE BEST) and an absolute love letter to Austen and the bookish girls who love her. I really enjoyed it ???

My expectations for this one might have been too high but I was disappointed. A modern day retelling of Persuasion set in the world of academia but the romance was lacking (hard to create a compelling couple when they hardly have an entire conversation on the pages) and too many pages were spent on the antics of the annoying best friend. Everyone seems to love it so the fact that Persuasion is my favorite Austen could be making me extra critical.

Alfoster Agree! I liked it but didn‘t love it.😍 6y

Finished this ARC (thanks #NetGalley) and while it bills itself as a modern re-telling of Austen‘s Persuasion (which I haven‘t read...YET), I didn‘t get many “feels” from this. I didn‘t really connect much with either H/h, they didn‘t have much on-screen time together, and there were some random sidebars that seemed to be thrown in as “filler”. The ending was nice but rather rushed and abrupt. I had higher hopes. 3.5/5⭐️ #romantsy

I am a sucker for anything sorta, kinda, maybe related to Jane Austen (yes, it may be somewhat cliche but Pride & Prejudice really is one of my favorite books & has been since I first read it) so of course I wanted to read this modern retelling of Persuasion. It‘s a quick, fun read perfect for the plane or vacation or sitting poolside which is to say I enjoyed it (and love the cover) but doubt it will stick with me the same way the original did.
