Elantris
Elantris: Tenth Anniversary Author's Definitive Edition | Brandon Sanderson
In 2005, Brandon Sanderson debuted with Elantris, an epic fantasy unlike any other then on the market. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Tor is reissuing Elantris in a special edition, a fresh chance to introduce it to the myriad readers who have since become Sanderson fans. This new edition begins with a preface by author Dan Wells, the first person to read the completed novel, and a new afterword by Sanderson explaining how he came to write the book and its place in the Cosmere, the unified universe of all his Tor novels. Also included is an expanded version of the "Ars Arcanum" appendix, with more of the technical details of the book's magic that fans can never get enough of.Elantris was truly a milestone both for Sanderson and for the genre of epic fantasy. It deserves this special treatment, something Tor has done only once before, with Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. Sanderson fans old and new will be excited to discover it.

I cannot sing the praises of these GraphicAudio editions of the Cosmere books enough. Pure radio show/book joy!

The characters were amazing! I really got the sense of their personality and constitutions. That being said, once you learn all the characters there was a bit of a dry spell. The world was vivid and clear and the magic system was beautiful written into the world building. Serene was just a wonderful strong character 👏

In theory, I enjoy the idea of exotic names and places and vocabulary sprinkled into Fantasy or Science Fiction. In practice, WTF?

sherri Too difficult for me.🤔 4mo
GondorGirl I find audio books to be a lot easier if there are a lot of odd fantasy names (or even names/words in languages in not familiar with). 4mo
Yossarian @GondorGirl I wonder how “official” audiobook pronunciations are. Did the audiobook for Game of Thrones match all the pronunciations for the later TV show? 4mo
GondorGirl @Yossarian I'm not sure got all books, but I know Susan Dennard got to send pronunciations and accent suggestions to her audio reader. 4mo

It's been a perfect Saturday, sitting on my balcony, reading with a beer! Working my way through Elantris, Blood of Dragons, and TMNT graphic novels - I'm in good company! 😋🍺📚💕

vivastory Is Elantris a stand alone? Sounds like a fantastic day! 6mo
Branwen @vivastory It is a stand alone, yes! There are a couple of short stories that Sanderson wrote that are set in this world, but Elantris itself is a stand alone book! 📚 6mo
vivastory Nice! It's been way too long since I've read Sanderson. Might have to try this one soon 6mo

vivastory I have been meaning to continue with Stormlight Archive, but have been putting it off because of the page count. I should commit to it. I remember I flew through book 1 in a little over a week. 6mo
Branwen @vivastory I've been attempting a reread of Stormlight Archive before January (when his first surprise book comes out) and it's not as daunting as I originally thought it would be! You should totally go for it! 6mo

Enjoyed it near the end, but it was quite a slow read, especially for Sanderson. I know it's his first big book though, but I wasn't as invested sadly.

I think I‘m finally coming out of my reading slump, and I want fantasy. So, I decided to pick up Elantris, and I‘m so glad I did. I wasn‘t super excited about it because I‘m ready to start the Stormlight Archives, but I ended up really enjoying it. It‘s probably the best book I‘ve read all year.

DrexEdit The size of Mr. Sanderson's books is usually what stops me before I even start. I always enjoy his books though. 😊 8mo
claudiuo @DrexEdit Same here, every time I want to start another of his books I am so reluctant because of length and I am a slow reader, but when I finally do, I end up loving it. 8mo

My March 2022 TBR is going to be short. I‘m going to be working on the books for my chapter challenge, so that won‘t leave me a lot of time for anything else. I‘m really hoping to get to Elantris this month. I don‘t know why I keep putting it off.

What are you reading in March?

Let‘s talk tbr. I‘m having a hard time planning my tbr this month. I went into a slump in January, and I don‘t really want to read anything. But I‘m excited about some of these, so I‘m hoping it will break the slump.

What are you reading this month?

I grew up reading Brandon Sanderson‘s Alcatraz series and The Rithmatist, both of which I enjoyed, but then never bothered with any of his adult fantasies. I read Elantris for book club and now I‘m upset with myself for sleeping on this author like I have. This was insanely good. Needless to say, I will now be bingeing Sanderson‘s adult novels.

LazyOwl I've read a lot of Sanderson but I haven't read this one. Will have to add it to my TBR. 1y

I'm not sure why but when I read High Fantasy I always read at a slower pace, it must be all the checking of maps and references on other information that slows me down. But somehow these are the books I most love! It's like I live in these worlds, becoming a member of the clans and a user of the intricate magical systems.
And I usually don't want them to end.

With no power (thanks winter storms in Texas) I was able to finish Elantris! As a fan of Sanderson (started with Way of Kings) I took the less traditional route in discovering his works. I finally gave this book a try and was surprised how it found it hooks in me half way through. A magical book within a magical world that doesn‘t show a lot of its magic!

So at the end of day one I've finished Elantris, read another 60 pages of Never Fade and listened to 3/4 of Mythos by Stephen Fry on audio while I (tried to) organise my office.

Spent a total of 5 hours reading yesterday and another 3 and a half hours so far today.

Pretty good start I think ☺️

An amazingly vivid high fantasy, a brilliant introduction to a mind blowing world, a crazy but easy to follow magic system, and some of the most amazing characters I've read in a long time.

I have so many praises to heap on this book but not the time to write them, and so I suggest you read it for yourself and enjoy.

Raoden wasn't certain how to respond. "I'm guessing an optimistic comment wouldn't do much good right now."
Galladon smiled slightly, "Definitely not! You optimists just can't understand that a depressed person doesn't want you to cheer them up, it makes us sick."
"Then just let me say something true my friend," Raoden said, "I appreciate you. I don't know if you fit in here, I doubt any of us do, but I value your help. ⬇️

So far so good, but it's a fair chunkster - 28 hours on audio, and according to goodreads its 638 pages! Wish me luck 🤭😊

(Covering the lending information to protect my privacy. Safety first!) I picked this up at the recommendation of a coworker, and I was pleasantly surprised at how it subverted a lot of fantasy tropes. It didn't absolutely hook me, but it kept me interested enough to finish, and I'd follow Sarene to the ends of the earth. Galladon and Hrathen could have used some edits, though. #fantasy

I‘m afraid I‘ve been spoiled by Sanderson‘s newer works - it isn‘t quite as polished and it fumbled a little in representation, but ultimately the same heart is there. I sort of wish I had read Elantris first, just so I could watch Sanderson grow as an author. I feel like though it was published 16 years ago, it couldn‘t be more timely with its themes of clashing politics, classism, extremism, misogyny, and a terrifying illness. It‘s a great book.

This story takes a while to really get moving, but it's well worth the wait. A great blend of magic and character study, and a great job interweaving multiple threads of a story. Also lots of politics, but not in a way that became boring. It took a long time to understand the magic system, but not in a frustrating way - the characters head to figure it out and restore it, which was a cool process to get to follow. I will read more in the Cosmere
