Although this is Sanderson‘s first novel, it is the 7th book of his I‘ve read. From this POV it‘s neat to see how early he develops some key features of his oeuvre and some Cosmere lore. The first half of this book was a bit slow for me, then the second half was really fast. So on average it‘s pretty well paced 😄

This was so much better than what I was expecting from his debut novel. I was a little worried going in, but it felt very much like Mistborn to me. I can‘t wait to hear what you all think. I‘ll be back later with next week‘s schedule. #CosmereBuddyRead

Another great Sanderson book! In this one the city of Elantris has lost its magic and instead houses the afflicted. I loved the Prince Raoden storyline and was rooting for his survival. I did think part 3 was a tad rushed- it felt like trying to tie up all the loose ends too quickly. Can‘t wait for the next in our #CosmereBuddyRead ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This one feels so small in my hands. Lol If anyone wants me to make the parts shorter, just let me know. Judging by how we have been doing so far, I think we can do this one in two weeks. #CosmereBuddyRead

The weather is pleasant, work is slow, and I‘m quite enjoying this book. Hopefully I can finish it before it‘s due at the library.
My first by Brandon Sanderson. 💡

This is a very soft pick. The plot was intriguing, and I did want to know how it ended so that kept me going. But there were some slow parts and scenes I found so unnecessary, to the point where I even contemplated bailing at times. There were also some plot holes and typos I found. Some resolutions seemed way too easy, certain ill-behaved characters just suddenly changing their ways after a good talking to. Continued ⬇️

Letting myself slow down a bit this morning… I‘m loving this one so far and I just LOVE the feel and smell of a decent paperback. This one has slightly thicker, creamier pages than a lot of paperbacks so it‘s a bit heavier but feels so good in my hands. So I wanna know, when it comes to physical books, do you prefer hardcover or paperback?

Had a “me date” at B&N with the gift card my hubby got me for Valentine‘s Day, hadn‘t a chance to use it until now. Really excited for these 😁 #bookhaul

Characters were so well created and I loved to follow their adventures. Some didn't survive and that made me to cry. I love it so much when a book makes me feel. There was also a nice a sliver of romance.

I loved all the scheming and especially morally grey characters that made me unsure about who to trust. I couldn't guess what was going to happen next and that was awesome.

This was the first book I read by Brandon Sanderson over four years ago, and I loved it then, but I think I love it even more now reading it as part of the larger Cosmere. I really enjoy the characters, the world is big but easily and quickly built, and the magic system is so interesting. Sanderson said he plans to write an Elantris 2, and I am definitely interested! Jack Garrett did a good job with the audiobook, too. Continuing through Cosmere!

Brandon Sanderson never fails to blow me away. I am officially dedicating 2025 to completing the Cosmere. This may be a bit slower than his other books, but the political plotting and complex character arcs make up for the pacing in every way. I related to the deep themes on religion and perhaps that‘s why I enjoyed it the most. Intriguing world and magic systems! Can‘t wait for Elantris 2. 5/5

Probably more enjoyable as a physical read rather than on audio. Still a pick.

Elantris has made me a Sanderson fan! We follow three POVs as they navigate a mystical, spreading disease, political/religious upheaval, and MAGIC! My complaints: “she tapped her cheek in thought“ appeared almost every time the main female character was mentioned, one of the main characters died too abruptly, and and there were some BIG unanswered questions for a book with no sequel. Still loved it, and will definitely read more Sanderson.

This was my first Sanderson, but I worry it was a bad place to start. I didn‘t realize this was his first published novel, but I think you can really tell with the inconsistent plotting. The idea of the world is pretty interesting (magical kingdom experiences a cataclysm and becomes a place of exile for diseased people). Two of the MCs (though extremely Mary Sue-ish) are well drawn. But it‘s just way too long and the villain is pretty lame.

For a debut this is very impressive, however compared to Sanderson‘s newer works it is just not as strong or as fun to read. His fantastic world building and unique magic systems are present though. This is what kept me listening so I finished the book. I would not recommend the full book audio though. The transitions between viewpoints are non existent so I was often confused as to who I was following.⬇️

I‘m setting this aside for now as I am gradually falling into a reading slump. This political fantasy with little action is not going to help that. I don‘t dislike it, just not grabbing my attention. Will resume later.

The characters were amazing! I really got the sense of their personality and constitutions. That being said, once you learn all the characters there was a bit of a dry spell. The world was vivid and clear and the magic system was beautiful written into the world building. Serene was just a wonderful strong character 👏

In theory, I enjoy the idea of exotic names and places and vocabulary sprinkled into Fantasy or Science Fiction. In practice, WTF?

It's been a perfect Saturday, sitting on my balcony, reading with a beer! Working my way through Elantris, Blood of Dragons, and TMNT graphic novels - I'm in good company! 😋🍺📚💕

Enjoyed it near the end, but it was quite a slow read, especially for Sanderson. I know it's his first big book though, but I wasn't as invested sadly.

It's still in the high 80's today so I'll only be at the park for a little while until I start to melt! ☀️ Aside from the heat it's a gorgeous day to be reading outside! 🌿📖 I hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday!

I think I‘m finally coming out of my reading slump, and I want fantasy. So, I decided to pick up Elantris, and I‘m so glad I did. I wasn‘t super excited about it because I‘m ready to start the Stormlight Archives, but I ended up really enjoying it. It‘s probably the best book I‘ve read all year.

My March 2022 TBR is going to be short. I‘m going to be working on the books for my chapter challenge, so that won‘t leave me a lot of time for anything else. I‘m really hoping to get to Elantris this month. I don‘t know why I keep putting it off.

I grew up reading Brandon Sanderson‘s Alcatraz series and The Rithmatist, both of which I enjoyed, but then never bothered with any of his adult fantasies. I read Elantris for book club and now I‘m upset with myself for sleeping on this author like I have. This was insanely good. Needless to say, I will now be bingeing Sanderson‘s adult novels.

I listened to this on audiobook. And it was wonderful. The story just captures you as it unfolded.

I'm not sure why but when I read High Fantasy I always read at a slower pace, it must be all the checking of maps and references on other information that slows me down. But somehow these are the books I most love! It's like I live in these worlds, becoming a member of the clans and a user of the intricate magical systems.
And I usually don't want them to end.
