Fresh and foreboding! Cold and dark as the depths of the ocean. Follows in theme the path of destruction that conflict and vengeance, violence, wreak, in the original story of Moby Dick. This is a tale told from the perspective of a whale, but it's not simply a retelling of Moby Dick from THAT whale, but rather a reframing of the needless slaughter of a hunting tradition when both whale and man are hunting.

A ship of whales goes searching for Toby Wick.

Holy heck, I enjoyed this book.

“Death is coming. Death I cannot prevent. Large and multiple. But there is one life, perhaps, that I can save. And sure that is how the war ends. Not in cataclysm. But in the small saving of a life. I May not know my own mind, but I know that I will not become a devil.”
This book about whales going after Toby Wick has no right to be this good. I highly recommend.

I have literally no clue what I just read. I can tell you it involves an upside down world of whales, a prophecy, a renamed Moby Dick and a lot of confusion. However I cannot make sense of it.

Kicking off my 2020 reading year the best way I know how! I figured today would be a perfect day to read an entire book and check off one of my challenge boxes--before real life jumps back in and demands attention. This book is beautifully illustrated but wow the story is out there. I'm finding it hard to suspend disbelief. Highly imaginative, though, with some thought provoking philosophy. #finishinaday #booked2020 #booked2020winter

Quite a short book, written for children? This was a very intriguing book written from the perspective of Whales hunting humans because they had been hunting and killing whales. A very clever idea and was wonderfully written by Patrick Ness. An intriguing book that deserved an intriguing end and Patrick certainly delivered on that! Well worth a read. I did it as an audiobook and really enjoyed the experience. A great cover.

Insanely beautiful edition of the book by Patrick Ness! 😍
For millennia, humans have killed whales, and whales have killed humans. But the young girl-hunter believes in a prophecy that will take revenge on those who killed her family. 🌊🐳🐋

Unique and quite strange. A fairytale re-telling of Moby Dick from the whale's perspective, highly fantasised with whale technology and speech. A little confusing at first but very good and beautifully illustrated. Young Adult? Children's? Old man? Who cares. A good story is just what it is.

A thoroughly imaginative Moby Dick inspired novella about a pod of whales hunting men. I really, really enjoyed the story and the voice even though I've never read Moby Dick. The one thing that held it back a bit for me is that the reveal of Toby Wick needed more exploration for me. It just felt too contrived. But still an excellent little read!

I first listened to the audiobook last month and rated it with 4 stars. Rovina Cai‘s expressionist illustrations in the print edition made my re-read a 5-star experience. A gorgeous, powerful twist on Moby Dick that explores blind loyalty and our capacity for violence.

Ok I liked this book but it‘s not a love it kind of book. I of course didn‘t get see all of the illustrations with it being an ebook, but the ones I could see were amazing. The story itself is sort of a retelling of Moby Dick. Interesting to note Bathsheba is a wife of King David and there are plenty of devil references in the book. You become what you seek.

“There are devils in the deep, but worst are the ones we make.”
A thoughtful and inventive fable about obsession and revenge that flips Moby Dick to a whale‘s perspective. I listened to the #audiobook, performed by Cassandra Campbell, straight through from start to finish without stopping. (It‘s only 3 hours.) I intend to look at the print edition also, because I‘ve heard of the gorgeous illustrations done by Rovina Cai.

A beautifully illustrated retelling of Moby Dick. We follow a pod of female whales who set out to kill the devil himself- Toby Wick, a mysterious man, hunting whales in his white ship. It was a quick, entertaining read, with some beautiful lines and illustrations in it.

#BookMail Pt2 is this gorgeous book by Patrick Ness with illustrations by Rovina Cai(they are soooo beautiful!)This Edition is stunning, from the ink full page illustrations which look more like paintings, to the actual cover under the dust jacket with its harpoon. The story itself is Moby Dick told from the perspective of the whale. In this retelling, it‘s the whales hunting the humans with all the violence & beauty that entails.

A bit slow getting in to the story but worthwhile with a great ending. Beautifully written from the point of view of the whale. I haven‘t seen the final artwork yet but judging by the roughs in the ARC they will be a great addition.

MinDea I appreciate this because I picked it up and thought it was slow so I put I down. Might have to give it another try. Thanks! 6y

On the surface, this is a retelling of Moby Dick, from the perspective of the whales. Because it is written. by Patrick Ness, it is so, so much more. Exquisite writing with moments of profound wisdom -- and the illustrations are perfection.

Confession: my favorite book in the world is Moby Dick. I have reread it once a year since I was twelve and first discovered it. I am almost fifty now and find something new every time I read it. I collect different editions of Moby Dick. So imagine my delight in finding this topsy-turvy version of my favorite story in the world. It took my breath away. My yearly reread will be enriched by this retelling.

Currently traveling in Scotland and found this great Bookstore in St. Andrews! They put sleeves on all their hardcovers! Also label all first editions and signed books. Looks like they also have signings by some big name authors. Could've spent all day there but had to leave after an hour because I was losing control...

With the lush, atmospheric art of Rovina Cai woven in throughout, this remarkable work by Patrick Ness turns the familiar tale of Moby Dick upside down and tells a story all its own with epic triumph and devastating fate.

I haven't read Moby Dick but I imagine this novel to be the short and sweet Freaky Friday version of the classic.
Man and whale are at war and we follow the fury of a pod of whales on the hunt for the mythical Toby Wick, who evolves from man to monster by the end.
So many commentaries on war, prejudice, and how our beliefs create evil.
Tiny book that packs a huge punch!
Thanks to HarperTeen & Edelweiss for a DRC!
