The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2)
The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) | Holly Black
The enchanting and bloodthirsty sequel to the New York Times bestselling novel The Cruel Prince. You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring. The first lesson is to make yourself strong. After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her, even as his fascination with her remains undiminished. When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world. Dramatic and thrilling fantasy blends with contemporary storytelling to create a fully realised world, filled with magic, politics and treachery.

I'm not a fan of the writing. So much cruelty and for a fairyland... All the political aspects, all the scheming, the back stabbing and the revelations - were quite boring. But great ending!

Cardan‘s relationship with Jude is one of hate/love. Im not really sure it‘s love, probably is passion mixed in. Liked this one better than the first book. It ended in a whole different way than I expected.

Finished my accidentally patriotic windows martinis🍸while finishing this book.
Jude‘s relationships get more & more complicate with her twin, her family, Locke & especially with Cardan. Jude gets a warning that someone she trusts has already betrayed her.

This series has been fun so far & I‘m excited for the 3rd book. Everything was left in quite the upheaval & my hold for Queen of Nothing says 24 weeks 🫠.

Between a pick and so-so. I didn‘t love the first book but wanted to give the series another chance. This was enjoyable and the world well-developed, but I struggled connecting to the characters.

First book finished for #14books14weeks2023

Second book of the “Folk of the air” series. 3.5⭐️ out of 5.
The schemes, the uncertainty and the little pinch of discomfort whenever a character is doing something is what I like about these books. A world where it‘s either eat or be eaten and in the center of it all a strong, mortal girl who‘s pulling the strings of the kingdom behind the curtain. I really enjoyed reading this book and didn‘t see the plot twist coming at the end, really good.

It's definitely better than the first book. I still feel like the story is a bit "all over the place" I plan to finish the trilogy in hopes things make more sense

It took me quite a bit longer to finish, but wow! I love the complexity of this story— the amount of fore-thought that had to go into making a novel about monarchy upheaval is amazing. I love how the characters are portrayed— everyone‘s morally grey, no one‘s perfect, but their own ideals and morals define who they are. Everyone is unique, I love it. And the ending was a major plot twist that I did not see coming. Can‘t wait to finish the series.

Since it is a sequel, I cant say much, but basically, Jude and Carden(the main characters)have this enemy to lovers kinda thing going on, and Carden is now King of Elfham(this fantasy world full of faeries that he now has to rule). Carden is a faerie himself, but Jude on the other hand, is a human, and basically they hate each other but they have to Rule Elfham together, and it's driving Jude crazy. He's driving Jude crazy. I rate this book a 10!

5feet.of.fury It‘s true! And I always defend to other people about it: “it‘s still reading! We read to children so they can start practicing literacy!” But when it‘s me then I‘ll be like, “I read x # of books, well, some of them were audio books” I dunno whyyyy when I know it‘s the same. Im still learning or being entertained as I would if I was looking at it on a piece of paper! 2y
JoeMo I used to think this way until my life got so busy that now probably 90% of what I read is by audiobook. My brain is still processing info and I‘m engaged in really interesting stories and learning new and different things. I‘d love to have more free time and energy to sit down and read, and to do so without falling asleep, but audiobooks have been absolutely saved me! 2y
Susanita That drives me crazy! Of course it‘s still reading. You‘re using the same area of the brain to process the information. I‘m glad to have listened to (most of) the books I‘ve read this way. 2y

RowReads1 I agree it‘s not a lesser experience at all. There is a difference in how you process and retain it. I don‘t think there‘s anything wrong w point that out. 2y
AudiobookingWithLeah It still counts because you're still consuming the book. Whether you read it or listen to it. I tend to say the word listening or reading in my reviews because I want people to know that I did my “consuming“ via audiobook. 2y

In my opinion, this book was way better than The Cruel Prince.
The plot was ten times better and there‘s barely a boring chapter.

So I practically devoured this book, because I thought the saga was only 2 books long, and then (after the cliffhanger at the end 😅) I discovered that there are actually 3 + an illustrated book with small stories about Cardan??!!
As soon as I finish with some other books in my TBR list, I will finish the series for sure :)

That whole scene in Queen Orlagh‘s palace was disorienting. There were some interesting typos throughout the story. I couldn‘t decide if they were editing mistakes or typographical.

I definitely enjoyed this sequel to “The Cruel Prince”. “The Wicked King” continues with the character development and the plot was very engaging. I honestly don‘t know how people were able to wait for the “The Queen of Nothing” because the ending gives you a hell of a cliffhanger.

When you have work you have to get done before Thanksgiving, but instead spend the afternoon reading the second book in a series. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️Jude continues to be a good character but she is also, at times, extremely dense. The ending of the book took me by surprise and packed a nice punch. On to the third book…oh and back to work 🤣 Meanwhile, #Lucy is ready for reading and snuggles. #petsoflitsy #catsoflitsy #readingbuddies
