Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay | J.K. Rowling
At the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured in New York with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escapes custody and sets about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwalds plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists Newt, his former Hogwarts student, who agrees to help once again, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world. This second original screenplay from J.K. Rowling, illustrated with stunning line art from MinaLima, expands on earlier events that helped shaped the wizarding world, with some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of both the books and films.

I got a chance of watching the new Fantastic Beasts movie last week, and of course I had to read the screenplay prior to it! I just love reliving the moments!

This is really good!! You have to read the first one for it to make sense. I could not out this down!! I can't wait for the third one. It does end with a cliffhanger so if you don't like books that do that, this isn't for you ( maybe the first one will be better for you then!?).

This has been my least favorite story from the wizarding world created by JK Rowling. Maybe it‘s because it‘s been awhile since I read the first screenplay. Maybe it‘s because I have yet to see either Fantastic Beasts film. I‘ll still count it as a pick because, well, Dumbledore. Hoping I like the movies better. 🧙‍♂️

KathyWheeler It took me awhile to get into the first Fantastic Beasts movie, but once I did, I liked it a lot. I haven‘t seen the second. 5y
TerriGreen I just watched this movie and it is not as good as the first one. I love Newt though! 🧙🏻 5y

“However long you keep me and my friends under surveillance, you‘re not going to discover plots against you, Travers, because we want the same thing: the defeat of Grindelwald.“

Does Dumbledore ever get an apology from the Ministry? Here's another time that they accuse Dumbledore of being secretive and spy on him while they should be using all of their resources to go after the bad guy.

So after reading this... I decided that I don't like to read screenplays. I love the world building and the descriptive scenes in books. If I didn't see the movie first I would have had no idea where this was taken place... a lot of the descriptions were brief. Ex: internal thestral-dawn carriage- night. That's it.

bookandbedandtea I completely agree. The whole time I was reading this I was missing the descriptions of settings and the windows into character's thoughts that we get in a novel. Screenplays are definitely not for me! 5y

Definitely an amazing book! I love how it picks up right where Fantastic Beasts left off. J.K. Rowling is writing another great series, and I can‘t wait for the next movie/screenplay to come out!

“There‘s a story in my family that a Phoenix will come to any Dumbledore who is in desperate need. They say my great-great-grandfather had one, but that it took flight when he died, never to return.”__Albus Dumbledore This explains why Fawkes left when Dumbledore died. I love foreshadowing.

I've ordered this but won't have it for a couple days. Meanwhile I've just heard some VERY distressing things about this screenplay/ movie and I'm kind of angry. I feel like one reveal in particular completely ruins one of the best book series ever.

Ok I just reread that and it sounds kinda dramatic but... I'm feeling dramatic right now!

wordzie 6y
DivineDiana Drama is allowed! 😉 6y
wanderinglynn I watched the movie on my flight back from DC. May I ask what you heard that was distressing? 6y
See All 11 Comments
bookandbedandtea @wanderinglynn the reveal of Creedence's identity/ real family. If that turns out to be true, rather than a lie from Grindelwald, I won't be able to take it! 6y
wanderinglynn Ah. Yes, I wondered about that when Grindelwald revealed it. Considering how manipulating Grindelwald is, I guess we‘ll see if that turns out to be true or not. 6y
RainyDayReading I haven‘t seen the movie but I‘ve heard enough about what happens to be worried. I don‘t know how the rest of the series is going to go with what they did with this one...especially towards the end. 6y
bookandbedandtea @wanderinglynn REALLY hoping G is lying. 🤞 6y
bookandbedandtea @RainyDayReading EXACTLY my concern! I feel like G has to be lying about that. Otherwise they completely upend the facts we've already learned about that family. And don't get me started on McGonagall teaching at the school before she was born, given the timeline of the original books. 😠 6y
RainyDayReading @bookandbedandtea Oh I know!!! It‘s like they looked at the timeline and then threw it completely out the window! I wouldn‘t put it past G to be lying...but...I also wouldn‘t put it past the writer‘s to make it true. I‘m not sure I like what they‘re doing to Queenie‘s storyline either. It just makes me extremely hesitant going into the rest of the movies. 6y
bookandbedandtea @RainyDayReading Yes! That's my fear, that TPTB don't care about previously established facts. That's they're only concerned about the story they're telling. I don't at alll like what I've heard of Queenie's story either. It seems completely opposite of who the character was when we met her in the first movie. 6y

#BookMail Pt1 I have a few books that have trickled in over the past week or so, preorders mostly & even a few signed! This one is the screenplay of the new Fantastic Beasts movie, which is getting very mixed reviews I must say. I really need to get out of the house and go see this, maybe the drive-in would be easier?🎥🚗🎫 Added to my Potter collection(which is OTT enough to be taking up two shelves with more space needed!)

BookishMarginalia We have a whole Harry Potter bookcase that is overflowing! And I really liked the book and movie — it‘s just that it‘s an installment, so it‘s a lot about setting up and developing (and showing the insidious rise of fascism). (edited) 6y

Saw this the day after Thanksgiving. I love Newt/Eddie Redmayne and all the magical creatures, hell I even love Jacob. But for the love does it UNDERMINE THE EXISITING CANON! i read an article that wonders how can one question JK or George Lucas...and i think fans have the right. Because for us we really care, it's not just about making money. 😫

TrishB Exactly! I‘ve decided not to watch because I‘ve,sadly, come to the conclusion it is just money making. 6y
Birdsong28 @TrishB I totally agree with you as I believe that the books were just extras to compliment the series but the films are just ridiculous. I haven't even read the cursed child as I don't recognize it as part of the Harry Potter canon #unpopularopinion 6y
TrishB @Birdsong28 was totally put off by JK‘s reactions to fan comments too. Will always love HP and I will probably watch on telly once it‘s free but I won‘t be running to pay for it 😔 6y

Kayla.Adriena @TrishB yes her reactions to fans are dismissive and disappointing. Her reactions to Donald Trump on the other hand are great 6y

Burghbookaddict Yeah, I thought the same thing. But I'm trying not to overthink it because I still enjoyed it. 6y
Jerdencon I felt that this was a filler movie - not much happened. I felt like it was setting up the next few movies. And I agree it totally disregards the timelines, I think. 6y

I suspect this will only be appreciated by true Potterheads like myself, and if oblivious muggles will start with Fantastic Beasts before the Harry Potter series, I don‘t think it‘ll be a hit. I‘m also presently ignoring the backlash on the alleged “Accio Niffler” and McGonagall timeline errors and keeping my final say until I‘m done with the whole FB run. “Pick” for now because the first and second instalments together has been a nail-biter.

An under discussed topic!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I wondered that when I first saw that look when he visited a young Tom Riddle 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai I loved the movie. However, this is my biggest complaint. There were moments where the aesthetic choices that were made felt...off. Or at least...off from what we were accustomed to the Wizarding world feeling like that was presented to us from the original series. 6y
