Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn: A King's Obsession | Alison Weir
It is the spring of 1527. Henry VIII has come to Hever Castle in Kent to pay court to Anne Boleyn. He is desperate to have her. For this mirror of female perfection he will set aside his Queen and all Cardinal Wolseys plans for a dynastic French marriage. Anne Boleyn is not so sure. She loathes Wolsey for breaking her betrothal to the Earl of Northumberlands son, Harry Percy, whom she had loved. She does not welcome the Kings advances; she knows that she can never give him her heart. But hers is an opportunist family. And whether Anne is willing or not, they will risk it all to see their daughter on the throne...

Fictional life of Anne Boleyn from the age of 11 to her death.

Interesting about her early life in the courts of Burgundy and France, a more difficult read once she arrives at Henry VIII's court, simply because the story is so well known and it wasn't enough to overcome the bias in Katherine of Aragon's favour from having read “The True Queen“ earlier.

atenelli It‘s such a good read. I learned a lot about her and definitely want to reread this novel. I felt that her life must have been hard after her return to England, particularly with her family‘s demands of her. 6mo

And that‘s my other chunkster for #20in4 done! Weir‘s books are so meticulously researched but always a delight. She truly opens the lives of the Tudor queens up beyond their spouse and reveals all of their human complexities.

I really liked this retelling because it shows more of how Anne wanted to avoid the King at the start of his fascination with her. Slowly evolving into her ambition taking over and wanting to advance her status. At times you will cheer for her and other you will feel sorry for her. She gave up the one person she actually loved to pursue her ambition with the King. I would highly recommend this series for anyone interested in the Tudors.

JaneyWaneyB @Mitch it good, a little heavy and slow in places, but Weir's historical knowledge comes through. I started with this one but I do have the other 3 books too 😊 let me know what you think 5y

It has taken me a looong time to read this book. It was good & shed new light on Anne Boleyn's life & courtship then marriage to Henry VIII. It was slow in places & Weir lacked a little flourish with her writing falling back into her comfort zone as a historian which could make this a so-so. I've got the rest in the series to read but they can wait whilst I head to something a little lighter.

This is hard to rate... at times I couldn‘t put it down, but there were 2 really long slow parts (over 100 pages each) which were very difficult to get thru. I‘m kind of obsessed with the Tudors, but if you‘re not: this may be trying for you 😕 Despite this book being fiction, I did learn some things, but I think Alison Weir‘s style may not be for me. Not sure when/if I will continue with the series... 🤔

Bowietrek Don‘t give up, there are some good things to come. The Anne of Cleves title is fascinating. The backstory Weir created for her is extensive and intriguing. 5y

2 Wives down & 4 to go! Not sure I should have started this series before all the books have been released. It‘s binge-worthy and I don‘t want to stop! This is a great take on AB! Some parts were slow, but those correspond with times when life was on hold for AB (when she and Henry VIII were awaiting a decision on The Great Matter). I‘ve been listening to podcasts about her and even found some Boleyn perfume. You can say that I‘m immersed! 4/5👑s

The young woman who changed the course of history.

Fresh from the palaces of Burgundy and France, Anne draws attention at the English court, embracing the play of courtly love.

But when the King commands, nothing is ever a game.

Anne has a spirit worthy of a crown - and the crown is what she seeks. At any price.

ANNE BOLEYN. The second of Henry's Queens. Her story.
History tells us why she died. This powerful novel shows her as she lived.

My husband is a government employee who still has to show up to work even though he‘s not currently being paid and it‘s been heckin stressful & sometimes it‘s just easier for me to disengage and relax with a favorite video game. #imabadreader

I listened to this audiobook while on a recent road trip. This is the second book of this author I have read. I am blown away by the research and detail of this author. Truly love all the detail. You see things for the MC view point, despite how you feel about the character you can feel for the situation they are in, be it their own doing or as a political pawn of their families. Cannot wait to read another of her wonderfully written books.

Alison Weir has painstakingly recreated the court of Henry VIII in her series following his six queens. Anne Boleyn, Henry's second and possibly most tragic and controversial wife, is portrayed here as a highly intelligent, strong, temperamental and flawed woman. These are not short books but can be gobbled up like candy and Weir, who has written numerous nonfiction books about the Tudors, is the perfect person to write them.

Anne Boleyn: A King's Obsession was really dense, but I liked it! Everyone knows Anne's story, but it's the same story portrayed over & over again. This book goes beyond that into her day-to-day life. If you enjoy knowing EVERYTHING, you should like this novel. #booklife #bookstagram #anneboleyn #sixtudorqueens #tudorfiction #alisonweir #bigbooks
