Rant
Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey | Chuck Palahniuk
The provocative and mind-bending new novel from the bestselling author of Fight Club and Haunted.Rant takes the form of a (fictional) oral history of Buster Rant Casey, in which an assortment of friends, enemies, admirers, detractors, and relations have their say on this evil character, who may or may not be the most efficient serial killer of our time.Buster Casey was every small kid born in a small town, searching for real thrills in a world of video games and action/adventure movies. The high school rebel who always wins and a childhood murderer? Rant Casey escapes from his hometown of Middleton into the big city and becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing, where, on designated nights, the participants recognize each other by dressing their cars with tin-can tails, Just Married toothpaste graffiti, and other refuse, then look for special markings in order to stalk and crash into each other. Its in this violent, late-night hunting game that Casey makes three friends. And after his spectacular death, these friends gather the testimony needed to build an oral history of his short life. Their collected anecdotes explore the charges that his saliva infected hundreds and caused a silent, urban plague of rabies . . .Expect hilarity and horror, and blazing insight into the desperate and surreal contemporary human condition as only Chuck Palahniuk can deliver it. Hes the postmillennial Jonathan Swift, the man to watch to learn whats uh-oh coming next.Excerpt from RANT:Wallace Boyer (Car Salesman): Like most people, I didnt meet and talk to Rant Casey until after he was dead. Thats how it works for most celebrities, after they croak their circle of close friends just explodes. A dead celebrity cant walk down the street without meeting a million best buddies they never met in real life.Dying was the best career move Jeff Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy ever made. . . . The way Rant Casey used to say it: Folks build a reputation by attacking you while youre aliveor praising you after you aint. From the Hardcover edition.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive, and ever growing, TBR shelves. Some are old and some are new, some were gifts and some I don't remember why I bought them.
Day 44
#ABookADay2024

TieDyeDude I was such a fan of Palahniuk in college. I haven't read his last few, though, and sold most of my collection of his books when we last moved. 10mo

TheNeverendingTBR Have you read Haunted? That was my last read by Palahniuk and it was dreadful. Choke is my favourite though, that one is hilarious. 3y

Chuck has gotten so very silly. I love his modern strategy of cramming three or four different underdeveloped novels into one, though.

At first I thought I was really going to enjoy this book, but the strange format made it difficult to follow, and I don‘t feel like anything was resolved in the end. ⭐️⭐️

I'm going to finish Circe on audiobook (thanks to the amazing @tpixie ❤). In the meantime before I start my #MakeMeReadIt August TBR, I'm going to read Rant! I love everything I've read by Palahniuk, so I'm really excited for this one.

Jess7 I keep getting multiple notifications for your posts. Usually ones from weeks ago. Not sure what‘s going on. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 7y
LiterRohde @Jess7 Oh no! That‘s my bad. I‘ve decided to add photo credits to my posts because I wanted to make sure people knew when I took time to make something and when I just grabbed from the internet. Then, my OCD wanted everything to be consistent, so I started updating past posts. I also edit past posts for clarity. I didn‘t know that would send a notification to people again. Good for new followers but really annoying for you. Sorry. I‘ll stop now. (edited) 7y
Jess7 It‘s ok @LiterRohde ! I just noticed I was getting all these notifications and I‘d click on it and be like — wait I already saw this and liked this one and it‘s from weeks ago? 😂 7y

From 10-17-17: Day 17: Weirdest Cover;I'm so behind because I really couldn't think of any. So, I did some research and realized there are more covers that I find weird because they don't truly match the story inside. Anyway, I also realized that most of Chuck Palahniuk's covers are bizarre so I chose my least favorite of his books. #bookriot #riotgram #weirdestcover

#riotgrams day 15 - #favoritetwist

Palahniuk is kinda synonymous with twists, like the Shyamalan of good writing. The only problem with twists, especially good and effective ones, is that you'll often know they're coming just from the cultural conversation ("Don't let anyone tell you how it ends" etc.) My advice: read as fast as possible and don't think about anything too hard the first time through.

Finished this last night! This was my second time through it (first time was a few years ago on audio) and i think I loved it even more this time. Weird and insightful and I love how the story unfolds. And that ending! Ah! Anyways. I definitely recommend this and I think I will for sure read it again someday. 📖🙃🙂📖

I've read it twice now, because the first time I wasn't sure I understood. The second time I realised that it isn't really something you can *understand*, it's an experience. Both reads brought new perspectives, and I definitely plan on reading it again to see what else I can squeeze out of it!
