The Redbreast
The Redbreast | Don Bartlett, Jo Nesb๘
Not all angels are heaven sent. I am one such angel, and I have come to pass judgement on the living, and the dead... A report of a rare and unusual gun - a type favoured by assassins - being smuggled into the country sparks Detective Harry Hole's interest. Then a former WW2 Nazi sympathizer is found with his throat cut. Next, Harry's former partner is murdered. Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night she was killed? As Harry's investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the killer is hell-bent on serving his own justice. And while the link between the cases remains a mystery, one thing is certain: he must be stopped.

Harry is likable & relatable character. He went through pretty tough things in this book and I felt for him. I liked secondary characters too.

This wasn't really fast-pacing but interesting enough. The past storyline was first a bit confusing before I understood how it was connected to the present storyline.

I loved humor in this book, it was a bit dry.

Not without its implausible moments and some work to keep the characters and sub-plots straight, but overall an intelligent and satisfying read.

Lots of escapism here, which I craved this month. Our world was too harsh. Finding beauty in books, nature, family, kind acts, friendship, my porch, feeling grateful & action.
4 audio mysteries, of these, 2 historical mysteries.
Fiction: 3, 1 historical
Memoir:1
8 mysteries: Shetland series, police procedurals, forensic archeology

tokorowilliamwallace Nice, I think you're the first person I've seen across all my platforms who've heard of or read Sara Blaedel. I found an omnibus of hers, with The Daughter & The Night Women in one volume, and had started the latter one. There's a lot more of her work/volumes at the library, too. 2y
kspenmoll @tokorowilliamwallace I have really really enjoyed the books of hers that I have read so far! 2y

Another multilayered book that I cannot do justice to when reviewing in words.Murder, suspense, uncertainty, & horrible heartbreak, forces Norwegian,ex alcoholic DI Harry Hole from the present,to submerge himself in the underground world of WWII,Nazi collaboration, tragedy, switched identities, lost love.A shadow of insidious evil hovers over the investigation & Harty is yanked around by ever changing political forces, government agendas, & sabotage.

I came to this series because I wanted to read a detective story but much of this book is telling a love story from World War II. A story of doomed love, it sets up a murder revenge plot in the current time. I enjoyed the parts where Harry was investigating the murders. I also liked that he has a new love interest. I felt this was the weakest of the 4 books I have read, but I will still read more in this series.

I'm liking this so much better now with my second try to get through it. It's gripping, and sad. So glad I returned to it.

Reggie I‘ve only read through book 6, The Snowman, in the series but this was by far my favorite. 4y
Blueberry @Reggie I've read through book 7 but somehow missed this one. It's my favorite also. I also really liked the author's stand-alone book The Son. 4y

Book mail is always the best mail! I‘m sad I can‘t browse Murder by the Book, but I‘m happy to support them by ordering online. They came through with the tagged book (they had to order it as well), and I‘m loving the simplicity of the cover. #shoplocal

My book club is reading The Snowman for December, which is number 7 in the Harry Hole series. So I‘m trying to see how many of the previous books I can squeeze in before The Snowman is โ€œdueโ€. This is the third. The first two were a bit meh, hoping this one will be a little more exciting. I know the Snowman will be good because they made a movie out of it.

My first Harry Hole mystery, but not my first Jo Nesbo book. Nesbo creates a multilayered story - switching from present day murders to Norwegian soldiers fighting for the Nazis at the Eastern Front. One can quickly identify the name of the murderer but his/her actual identity isn‘t revealed until the end. I was slightly disappointed with one plot element that was left dangling at the end, but overall a very good read. 4.0/5.0โญ๏ธ #2019

This was my first Jo Nesbø crime thriller. I went in with few expectations and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it! Harry Hole is a deeply flawed but likable character, and I‘m glad I started with this instead of the 1st two in the series (which I may go back and read someday). It was extremely well-written and fast-paced.

I decided to read the next in the series for my last #pop18 regular prompt #heist.

#pop18 #nordicnoir

gradcat I love the series! I feel like he lost it a little bit when he left Harry Hole behind...I haven‘t enjoyed his last two at all. 6y
alisiakae @gradcat I‘m really liking it too! I just picked up one of the last Harry Hole books at a used book shop, and 2 more at the library. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ This might be a binge series for me. 6y
gradcat I and my mother both enjoyed the series very much...I began with the first one published in English, then had to wait for the rest. I highly recommend following the Norwegian publishing order, as they are very much continuations of the last, especially the latter four or five books. 6y
alisiakae @gradcat I am definitely following the Norwegian publishing order, with the exception that I started with the 3rd. I heard that the first two weren‘t very strong, but I may go back and read them at a later point. But 3๏ธโƒฃ onwards I plan on reading in order. 6y
gradcat @4thhouseontheleft I agree about the first two books; however, at some point the reader begins to wonder why Harry was in Australia & Thailand, and what in heaven‘s name happened to him there, lol.... 6y

This was amazing. Told in two different story lines, chapters of a WWII Norwegian past interspersed with the then 2000 present, this Harry Hole novel is definitely where, for me, Jo Nesbo the writer has arrived. This was so intricate. Harry is dealing with neo-Nazis and you don't really know who the real threat is. But this book, I'm still shocked. I'm totally invested in Harry now. Onto the next!!!!

Reviewsbylola I haven't read this one but I have another Nesbit on my TBR right now. 7y
mrozzz Is Nesbø awesome or is he awesome? ? I can't wait to read more of his novels. Harry Hole or otherwise. 7y
Reggie You should definitely read this one @Reviewsbylola. It's soooo good. @mrozzz I'm reading them in order and the first one was kinda iffy for me, but this one........ just WOW. 7y

Ms_T I haven't read a Jo Nesbo book. Is there a standalone you'd recommend? 7y
Reggie @Ms_T I've only read the first 3 in this series by him, but I think this one could be a stand alone. Things that happen in the previous books are mentioned minimally and have no bearing on what happens in this one. 7y

Made a Nordic noir shelf. I decided to let go my Lars Keplers. I have so many other good Nordic thrillers not read yet and his style of writing was good but I feel like it wasn't Nesbรธ/Ohlsson/Adler-Ohlsen/Hjorth&Rosenfeldt -good. I think I'm going back to Keplers at some point but now doesn't feel like the right time.

The third Harry Hole book involving neo-Nazis. Engaging murder thriller, fast paced and suspenseful. A lot of back story to get through but has a major payoff. Also the ending leaves the door open for an exciting follow up. 7/10

Loved this book!!! So much better than the first book I read by Jo Nesbø, The Bat. This one was addictive. The history element combining with the case at hand made this police procedural complex & intriguing. I am officially sucked into Harry Hole's world & am going to continue to read this series until I am all caught up!
