The Orphan of Salt Winds
The Orphan of Salt Winds | Elizabeth Brooks
England, 1939. Ten-year-old Virginia Wrathmell arrives at Salt Winds, a secluded house on the edge of a marsh, to meet her adoptive parents--practical, dependable Clem and glamorous, mercurial Lorna. The marsh, with its deceptive tides, is a beautiful but threatening place. Virginia's new parents' marriage is full of secrets and tensions she doesn't quite understand, and their wealthy neighbor, Max Deering, drops by too often, taking an unwholesome interest in the family's affairs. Only Clem offers a true sense of home. War feels far away among the birds and shifting sands--until the day a German fighter plane crashes into the marsh, and Clem ventures out to rescue the airman. What happens next sets into motion a crime so devastating it will haunt Virginia for the rest of her life. Seventy-five years later, she finds herself drawn back to the marsh, and to a teenage girl who appears there, nearly frozen and burdened by her own secrets. In her, Virginia might have a chance at retribution and a way to right a grave mistake she made as a child. Elizabeth Brooks's gripping debut mirrors its marshy landscape--full of twists and turns and moored in a tangle of family secrets. A gothic, psychological mystery and atmospheric coming-of-age story, The Orphan of Salt Winds is the portrait of a woman haunted by the place she calls home.

Wow. This one surprised me. Eloquently written, reminiscently gothic, and haunting. Definitely illustrated the impact of childhood trauma throughout one‘s life. Although the ending fell flat for me, and I was able to figure out a few plot points relatively early on, I really enjoyed this novel. It was a short, fastball that held my attention & broke my reading slump.

monalyisha Hooray! I think you might know that I loved this one! Most of my reading group wasn't impressed so I'm glad you're on my team. Haha. ;) 4mo
MoonWitch94 @monalyisha Yes! I totally see why they didn‘t enjoy it, HOWEVER, I think there are way more positive things about it than negative. I feel like we are some of the only ones who feel this way, hahaha. I do wish she had kept the title “Call of the Curlew”. I like that so much better. What do you think?? 4mo
monalyisha @MoonWitch93 I like both titles! “Call of the Curlew” has nice alliteration & feels classic, like something written by Jack London or Poe...but “The Orphan of Salt Winds” drew me in with a hint that it‘d be a setting I‘d dig. 🌊🌬 4mo

This story is told from the perspective of a newly adopted girl in WWII and the same person when she is 80-something living at Salt Winds. It‘s a somewhat slow, moody read about a tragedy the girl witnessed and its affect on her as she nears death, but its well written and good enough to keep your interest to the end. She‘s a flawed character making bad decisions at both ages, which is frustrating but necessary to the story. 3-1/2 stars

Love this description of snow.

“It‘s started snowing again. It‘s too dark to see anything through the indigo window—and anyway their reflections are in the way—but Virginia senses it all the same. There‘s a prickly silence that comes with snowfall, and it‘s more than just absence of sound. It‘s heavy. If you put that silence on the kitchen scales, they‘d tilt with a loud clang.”

GingerAntics That is a PERFECT description of snow. 💙💙💙 5mo
Texreader @GingerAntics I know, right? There were some very nice descriptions in this book. Not overdone either. 5mo

““Ready?” Lorna whispered, taking the weapon back and crooking her finger around the trigger. Virginia nodded, caught halfway between gratitude and mild resentment. This wasn‘t the sort of thing proper mothers got up to with their daughters. On the other hand, it was exciting.”

Then I guess my mom wasn‘t proper! Ha! We were an intrepid bunch growing up in Texas. I learned at a very young age gun safety and how to shoot a rifle. It was exciting!

Crazeedi Everyone should learn from an early age 5mo
GingerAntics I think gun safety is the key. When that gets left out (and people trying to tell them to teach their kids how to safely use guns instead of letting them play with them gets met with accusations of their second amendment rights being violated) bad things happen. I think every kid should learn gun safety, even if there are no guns in their homes. Guns are out there. We should know how to be safe with them. (edited) 5mo

“There were still a few veils of mist drifting over the ground, but wherever they parted she glimpsed streaks of gold, which must have been water but looked like pure light.”

Alright, let me explain why I think this book is only so-so. It‘s beautifully written and the imagery is wonderful, but I have an issue with the main character. Continued in comments....

MirrorMask The protagonist is Virginia, an orphan that comes to stay at Salt Winds during WWII. The book is from her perspective when she was a little girl ages 10-12 and as an old woman in 2015. Generally, the age of the protagonist has no bearing on weather I enjoy a book or not, but had the book been told from Lorna‘s perspective I would have loved it even more.
7mo
MirrorMask I had the same problem with Atonement, both children let their jealousy, vindictiveness, and naivety monumentally alter the course of someone‘s life. 7mo
monalyisha That‘s fair! Virginia was a tricky narrator, for sure! (She was the right protagonist for me, though.) 7mo

MirrorMask @monalyisha @TheLibrarian I heard back from @Elma she has just sent out the first book to @TheLibrarian and she will send out the second one once she gets a chance to read it. monalyisha @MirrorMask Perfect! How do you feel about the possibility of this next book being sent to you late? If you'd really rather have it on-time, don't be shy about saying so! But I just started grad school after having been absent from the academic world for 10 years; I'm kind-of nervous about getting my assignments done. Since it started on Monday, I've neglected reading “for fun.“ If I can avoid feeling pressured to finish “Melmoth,“ it would help. 7mo

monalyisha @TheLibrarian Haha. I was an English major & our professors really encouraged us to mark up the text. So, that‘s not a particular hurdle I have to struggle over. It‘s not a practice I‘ve kept up, though, since I usually borrow library books. So I‘m kind-of thrilled. 😉 I like to see it as: a book changes *you.* It only makes sense to change it right back — at least a bit. A reciprocal relationship. 8mo

Enjoyed the suspense of this historical novel set in England during WWII. Told in alternating chapters from the protagonists p.o.v at a 12 year old and a 70 year old. It had a haunting and Gothic feel.

I can‘t say much because it‘s part of my #LMPBC but I really enjoyed this well-written book.

Told in alternating chapters (2015 and 139/1940s), this story is about Virginia, a woman haunted by her past and the place she calls home.

TheLibrarian @monalyisha I mailed the book to you today so hopefully you will get it soon. 8mo
monalyisha @TheLibrarian Do you have an ETA for the book? I‘m not jonesing for it or anything (I have plenty to read, OF COURSE 💁‍♀️) but should I be concerned that it hasn‘t arrived yet or is that okay/expected? 8mo
TheLibrarian @monalyisha My husband said the eta should be the 6th. But I can get the receipt from his car to double check. 8mo
monalyisha @TheLibrarian That‘s okay! It‘s not the 6th yet. That‘s good enough for me! 🙌🏻 8mo
monalyisha ( @TheLibrarian Packages just sometimes get stolen in my neighborhood. And there‘s been a rash of car break-ins recently, too. That‘s city livin‘, I guess. 😣 So, I wanted to make sure none of that was the case.) (edited) 8mo

I wanted to like this book. Virginia isn't a likable character and since the story is told through her there's a lot that the reader understands that she doesn't. I found Lorna a far more interesting character. I would have loved to perhaps have seen the book told through noth both women's eyes.

This was such an interesting book! It was so atmospheric and you could feel the impending doom from the very first page. I loved the way the story unfolded and the alternating chapters between the current Virginia and her childhood. And the creaking old house was probably my very favorite character!

My only complaint is that it didn't seem very British. Maybe things were changed for the American audience, but the dialogue felt American.

This really was a beautiful story with a gothic undertone. Virginia is a 10 year old girl adopted during WWII in England and is brought home to parents that have struggles of their own. Virginia overhears whispered arguments and a creepy neighbor always seems to appear, putting Clem on edge.
This book goes back and forth between 1940-1941 and 2015. Overall I gave 4.5 ⭐ I thought it was wonderful and sad all filled into one.
