Gap of Time
Gap of Time | Jeanette Winterson
"The Winter s Tale "is one of Shakespeare s late plays. It tells the story of a king whose jealousy results in the banishment of his baby daughter and the death of his beautiful wife. His daughter is found and brought up by a shepherd on the Bohemian coast, but through a series of extraordinary events, father and daughter, and eventually mother too, are reunited. In "The Gap of Time," Jeanette Winterson s cover version of "The Winter s Tale," we move from London, a city reeling after the 2008 financial crisis, to a storm-ravaged American city called New Bohemia. Her story is one of childhood friendship, money, status, technology and the elliptical nature of time. Written with energy and wit, this is a story of the consuming power of jealousy on the one hand, and redemption and the enduring love of a lost child on the other."

Jeanette Winterson's re-telling of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale is at its best in Leo, Xeno, and MiMi's back story and the present day of Shep and Perdita, but the parts connecting them didn't quite work for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I only kept reading this because I was interested in the story. I found the writing to be wooden and uninteresting, the characters either pretentious (who thinks Walden and Ben Franklin are obscure??), stupid, or absolutely insane. I also found the age-gap between Perdita and Zel concerning, as well as Clo‘s obvious attraction to teenage girls. Yikes. #bookspin

TheAromaofBooks At least it's off the list!! 4y
wideeyedreader @TheAromaofBooks that‘s very true! I‘m kind of sad, though, because I wanted to like it. It seemed like Winterson had a very...made-up idea of how people actually live and talk and act, though 4y
BookwormM Maybe she was confined by the original source material as this is part of the Shakespeare retold series and I have found other books in this series by other authors don‘t update well. 4y
wideeyedreader @BookwormM yes, I was aware of that. However, I feel that she could have retold the original story without some of the creepier elements 4y

1. It depends. Keep if I want to reread it, reference it again, or if it's important enough. sell what I can and donate the rest.
2. An afternoon, or in 3 months. I dunno, shorter fiction feel too much like cheating these days. Pepperharrow took 2 days, I've been at A Distant Mirror (600 pg of dryish nonfiction) since November
3. Jeanette Winterson's The Gap of Time. I try to finish everything if I can. #wondrouswednesday @Eggs

I read this because it‘s part of the Hogarth Shakespeare retellings. This one is The Winter‘s Tale. The early section with Leo is insufferable, but I stuck with it because it‘s part of the series. It got a bit better as we saw Perdita as an adult. It wasn‘t my favorite, but I still enjoy seeing these famous plays reimagined in a modern setting.

The first section of this retelling of The Winter's Tale is excellent. Rich, visceral, and told from the perspective of a very interesting character. The second section starts out strong but soon becomes unnecessarily violent (even accounting for the Shakespearean origins) and too outlandish to believe. The third jumps right in with geographical and racial stereotypes exacerbated by the audiobook narrator's accents. And that's as far as I got.

Texreader Oh dear. I would have bailed too 5y

A new fave Jeanette Winterson and one of my fave Hogarth Shakespeares! I loved the changes she made to make a very odd plot make sense in the modern day, Leontes and Polixenes‘ relationship, everything about Paulina (Paulina is one of my all time darlings), and everything she wrote about time. This did justice to one of the weirdest and best Shakespeares so well

I adored this "cover version" of "The Winter's Tale!" Winterson is such a gorgeous writer and she captures both the brutality and the hopefulness inherent in the play. I'm glad I read this one after seeing a Public Works production last year that moved me to tears, it def made her approach resonate more than my college memories of the play would've. I loved the way she focused on the concept of time to bring out her themes through the entire book.

Welp, the narration is killing me. More than halfway through and I can't stand listening to any more vile characters speak in French, British, Louisiana, or Detroit accents. Some lovely passages on time helped me think a bit about the play, but overall I found this a very unpleasant book. Maybe I don't want my Shakespeare updated. Maybe I need to read something else by Winterson. 🏃‍♀️🐻

Winterson's retelling of Shakespeare's The Winter Tale. Sadly, this just didn't do it for me. I was annoyed from start to finish with how the characters+events were shoehorned into the Shakespearean narrative. One could suspend disbelief in the play; here, it was almost painfully embarrassing. The characters all struck me as token types: gay, feminist, trans, Jewish, Black. The book made me uncomfortable in how it used race & gender & violence.

batsy The book beginning with a passage where the moon is described as "Earth's autistic twin" was a warning sign. It's rare that I pan a book but I had to force myself to finish this. For all of the accolades Winterson gets, it was poorly imagined & suffered from a brusque, choppy prose style in what seems like a heavy-handed attempt to make Shakespeare cool. I expect better from her!! Lol OK I'll stop now ❎? @zsuzsanna_reads @merelybookish

TrishB Love your review 💕 so not tempted by the book! 6y
Lindy I‘m surprised by your reaction because we often have similar tastes. I hated the play but loved this book. After reading the novel, I read an interview in which Winterson explained why she loved the play so much, and that softened my attitude towards the original play. 6y
batsy @TrishB Thank you Trish, but I feel bad now putting people off it 😂 Though I think she's written far better novels by her own standard! 6y
batsy I know @Lindy I expected to love it and was quite taken aback by my own aversion to it! I largely felt that all of the problems in the play remained as problems in the novel, in a way that bothered me. I could tell from the ending that this is a play that means a lot to Winterson—would prefer to read an essay by her on it. 6y
Lindy @batsy Well, it‘s good when we are surprised; it means we still have things to discover. I‘m sorry, however that this book was an unpleasant experience for you. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I have this book! Okay, it can disappear to the bottom of my TBR for now. 😅 You truly must detest the book, for I seldom see you giving a book a pan. 👎 6y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Ahaha! I think once a book rubs me the wrong way for a significant reason, it's downhill all the way 😆 6y
GingerAntics Ew, glad I couldn‘t get my hands on a copy, then. I‘m not a big fan of retellings for adults to begin with. I can‘t stand a token character to begin with. A book full of them sounds like torture. 6y
readordierachel How disappointing! Will have to skip this one. 6y
fleeting Oh no! But I also remember that after having read 3 Wintersons, I grew tired of her. I feel like she's reached the end of her wordplay and is just pushing the limits - and failing at it. 😕 6y
batsy @GingerAntics @ReadOrDieRachel I'm generally wary of retellings for the same reason :) But this got a lot of positive reviews so it could be just me; I always have high expectations with Winterson's books, but the last time I read anything by her was in college and as @fleeting reminds me, I didn't really enjoy a few of her other works as I expected to, either. I think maybe she's just not an author for me 🤷🏽‍♀️ 6y
zsuzsanna_reads @batsy it felt as if she signed up to write this book for the Shakespeare series and then wrote the thing in a last minute panic 😨 I'm still going to give some of her better known work a go. 6y

It's a stormy night, I cannot sleep (it's 2.39 am) so I have started on my Shakespeare retelling #buddyread with @merelybookish and @batsy . I'll let you guys know how it's going one I've finished part 1. My first impressions are mixed.

Lcsmcat I thought this one got better as it went along, for what it‘s worth. 6y
gradcat I love Jeanette Winterson, and I haven‘t read anything by her in quite some time...thanks for the reminder! 6y
batsy I had mixed feelings when I started, too. It's gotten a bit better as I've progressed. Feels like a book that works better for me if I read whole chunks uninterrupted... 6y
See All 17 Comments
merelybookish I started today on audio. I'm still at the stage where I'm connecting characters to who they were in the play, and thinking about that conversion. I find some of the updates interesting and some a bit perplexing. (Not sure how I feel about making the 'low' characters into African Americans? 😬) @batsy @Lcsmcat 6y
Lcsmcat @merelybookish I had the same thought. Plus it makes it rather obvious that Perdita is adopted, which was not apparent in the play. 6y
zsuzsanna_reads @merelybookish @batsy @Lcsmcat I thought Shep and his son were the only likeable characters so far. (I'm just about to finish part 1.) I get why Leo is an awful asset stripping hedge fund manager - there are people like that around sadly - but did he have to be quite so much a caricature? I like the characterisation through the dialogue, but now and then there is something so weird (for a Londoner) that it disrupts the illusion. ... 6y
zsuzsanna_reads For example: Leo's office. I used to live in the docklands. So ok, maybe you could see the planes from somewhere on the Eastern side of canary wharf if you're high up enough even though hedge funds are traditionally based in mayfair, but then: it has a garden with a gardener? What? He might have part of a floor in a tower block or how can he see the planes... Feels like lack of research there. 6y
zsuzsanna_reads Also the world's weirdest birth. 6y
zsuzsanna_reads Big birth trauma trigger warning there. A bit of a bad surprise for me! 6y
zsuzsanna_reads And the weird "women don't play video games" stereotype. 6y
batsy @merelybookish That's a good point and it made me go "hmm" as well. @zsuzsanna_reads I found the birth scene strange, as well. I find certain characters interesting—Pauline, Xeno—but the rest come off as "types", which perhaps isn't her fault since it's based off Shakespeare, but the novel tries to expand Shakespeare's universe while also adhering closely to it, so the effect, for me, is oddly abrupt and superficial... 6y
batsy @zsuzsanna_reads About Leo, yes. I feel like there is an attempt to flesh him out as a character with more depth or complexity by showing his pain or whatever, but that only makes him more insufferable, in my eyes 😬 Maybe that was the goal: to depict the dangerous narcissism of this alpha male! 6y
merelybookish @batsy @zsuzsanna_reads I feel like there are things about the writing I like but the story is making my skin crawl. If someone cut phone cords and locked you in a house so that you could help a woman giving birth, wouldn't you think him a psychopath and cut off all contact with him? And if he was your husband, wouldn't you get a restraining order for you and your kids? 😬 6y
zsuzsanna_reads @merelybookish It made a lot more sense when Leontes was the ruler of a small state. 6y
batsy @merelybookish I absolutely agree. Even Pauline seeing the worst of him and still kind of excusing him feels like a bit of a let down, character-wise. I just finished this today because I wanted to get it over with. I feel bad to be a Negative Nelly buddy readers, sorry guys 🙈 But this book and I didn't quite get along... 6y
merelybookish @batsy Umm..no need to apologise! The audio is pretty painful. So I may need to find a print copy to power through or just give up! I'm having so many problems with the story and then there's a racist element that makes me feel gross. So...not loving it. 6y
zsuzsanna_reads @batsy @merelybookish Seems like none of us like it! Odd from what is meant to be from an LGBT icon... 6y

My holiday reading from last week! Particularly a fan of Jeanette Winterson's The Gap of Time - insanely well written, gripping (even written over 17 years), and cleverly connected to its inspiration (Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale) -- also can't believe it took me this long to read A Room of One's Own, and I can safely say it met and exceeded all of my expectations. I love finding books to recommend! 📚🤓😍

I'm obviously in one of those slumps at the moment where no book seems to be able to please me. Meh! This retelling of Shakespeare's Winter's Tale was alright but my problem is the convolution of the plot which is already an issue in the original. So this was a nice read but I didn't love it.

So much beautiful language in this book! I was really excited to read this because I know Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale inside and out because I wrote a similar retelling of #thewinterstale, but new adult/young adult (it's being published soon!).
