The Good Egg | Jory John
27 posts | 33 read | 10 to read
From the bestselling creators of The Bad Seed, a timely story about not having to be Grade A perfect! Meet the good egg. Hes a verrrrrry good egg indeed. But trying to be so good is hard when everyone else is plain ol rotten. As the other eggs in the dozen behave badly, the good egg starts to crack from all the pressure of feeling like he has to be perfect. So, he decides enough is enough! Its time for him to make a change Dynamic duo Jory John and Pete Oswald hatch a funny and charming story that reminds us of the importance of balance, self-care, and accepting those who we love (even if they are sometimes a bit rotten). Perfect for reading aloud and shared story time!

The Good Egg | Jory John

The Good Egg by Jory John is about an egg that embarks on a self-care and reflection journey. The good egg is about finding healthy coping mechanisms and ways to feel good about yourself. This is a great great book that I hope to have readily available to my students when they need a reminder of how to cope or feel good.

The Good Egg by Jory John! This MF, PR New York Times Best Selling book is a wonderful story that teaches it's readers the importance of self-care. Our main character, the Good Egg, goes on a journey of self discovery. Each page, he learns something new about what he can and cannot handle. In the end, our Good Egg learns what he needs in life to be successful, leaving all his stress behind. I chose this book as a Partner Read because it pairs well

MFlowers with the UDL and EL principles chosen to tag along. EL strategies 2, 3, & 32 all coincide with promoting discussion within a small group, more specifically student pairs. 2 (promote cooperation (small groups)), 3 (encourage self talk (positive thinking)), & 32 (use student pairs for team learning). UDL principle 9.3 (develop self assessment and reflection) pairs well with the discussion led by students themselves. They have a chance to asses what 4y
MFlowers they learned from the book, and they can talk about any struggles they also share. This book is a great gateway for students to discuss what weighs them down at home. I'd put them in pairs, so each student felt more comfortable discussing. The following website has a clear cut standard that accompanies both these strategies and principles perfectly. https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5684

Chaseb I think you did a great job expanding on how this book could be used in schools, bu providing standards that could go with the book, as well as saying the students could have conversations about what they learned from the book. overall, I think this is a great post! 4y
DrSpalding I love this series! There is a new one that is coming out about a couch potato. 4y

The Good Egg by Jory John, illustrated by Pete Oswald is a New York Times Best Seller MF. This book tells a story of a very good egg who‘s always willing to lend a helping hand and stop any quarrels among the other eggs. The good egg is so busy trying to be good that he forgets to care for himself and begins to crack, the story carries on as he learns new ways to find balance between caring for himself while still being a good egg. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 https://www.mrsbremersclass.com/2019/06/the-good-egg.html?m=1 wow this is an awesome link to tons of activities and lessons for kindergartens regarding The Good Egg. These activities help teach students about Story elements text to self and text to text connections, AND has problem and solution activities! This will most definitely be a resource I use in my future classroom. 4y
Emmaturtle3 I think this book would be great for an RA. For ESOL strategies I would use #10 by having the students share with their partners how the text relates to themselves and how they can work on their own personal balance. For UDL I would focus on 3.2 by highlighting the big idea of self care and balance, I think this is an awesome skill to learn at such a young age. (edited) 4y
DrSpalding This is one of your best posts yet. Please do use these books in your classroom and the many resources you have found. Read aloud to your students daily to model a love for reading and what a fluent reader sounds like. 4y

Not what I was expecting at all. The Good Egg spends so much time being a good egg, his brain starts to scramble and his shell starts to crack. So he takes some time out, lots of self-care and eventually finds his way back to his less-than-perfect friends and stops trying to change them.

I think geared towards older children.

squirrelbrain Sounds like we should all read The Good Egg! 4y

The Good Egg is an amazing F story written by Jory John. I cried the first time I read this book because I saw myself as the egg. I then proceeded to tell all my friends about the Egg who loves being good and helping others, but after helping so much he cracked. He had to take some time to let himself heal and realized that he didn‘t have to take care of everyone, much like I had to learn. #UCFLAE3414SP20

VictoriaG My friends will now reference the book if they see me wearing myself thin to help others and they will tell me that my shell is cracking and that I‘m not being a good egg to myself. I think this book is great for CR, RA or AS. 5y
VictoriaG https://www.counselorkeri.com/2019/02/16/the-good-egg-activities/ is a wonderful site geared to help counselors and teachers teach on control and self care. I can use UDL 7.3- Minimize threats and distractions by teaching the students about self care. I would also use ESOL Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again. 5y
Brennap Aw I love this so much it looks like such a cute book! 5y
DrSpalding I too can relate to the egg! Helpful resource and great idea to use this as choral reading a read aloud or an author study! 5y

This F picture book is a great RA for students. It‘s about a good egg who begins to crack due to an overwhelming feeling he has trying to make the people around him good like him. He learns that he doesn‘t need to worry so much and to focus on himself. The UDL principle (9.1), promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation.

LizzettM The EL strategy 2, promote cooperation (small groups) this will allow students to work together during the RA.

My last few #ImpulseRead picture books for now. I really liked The Good Egg, and the others were alright. #wintergames #merryreaders

Clwojick I really want to read The Good Egg, and The Bad Seed. They look adorable. I love the illustration style. ♥️ 5y
monalyisha I was so disappointed by “A Tiger Like Me”! It was so wordy! I honestly gave up & didn‘t even read the entire thing. 🤷‍♀️ I did like “The Good Egg,” though Mac Barnett‘s “Just Because” was my favorite of the (Goodreads-nominated) bunch. 😊 5y
Butterfinger My little girl loves the good egg. I think I have all the names memorized in order. 5y

Hummmmm. I see why this book shows up on so many best of lists. It uses an egg and cracking as a way to illustrate feeling under pressure because you are trying to be good in a world of people not trying as hard. How do you deal. You take time for yourself and learn what you need to do to keep your shell intact in a crazy world.

I relate to this egg on a spiritual level. I wish he had been less accommodating upon his return to his “friends”, but I still loved this book.

britt_brooke @merelybookish 💚 My son, who‘s almost 7, has been ripping through them this week! This is the last one he needed and he‘ll have read them all. So proud of him! 6y
ShelleyBooksie Are the unicorn books graphic novels as well? My 7 year old would really like them if so. She is all about owl diaries and princess in black. 6y

britt_brooke @ShelleyBooksie Yes, they are. They are collections that originated from a web comic. I‘ve been reading them with my 9 year old niece and she loves them. They‘re really cute and I think would be fine for a 7 year old. In the books, Phoebe is in 4th grade. (edited) 6y
ShelleyBooksie Thanks @britt_brooke - cannot wait to check them out. 6y

G‘s kindergarten class went on a field trip this afternoon to our local bookstore. The kids are turning their classroom into a bookshop next week, with books they created themselves, and parents will be given fake money to buy their child‘s books. So today was all about learning the ins and outs of running a book store. And at the end they got to vote for a book to be donated to their class library! The tagged book won.
